We have always been able to rely on the care team at 1st Vet. In the past I have brought Moose in twice for blood in his urine and they resolved the issue each time. But I'm writing this review for the other day when I noticed his increase in respirations. Moose was swiftly taken care of. Dr Kogan was relatable, kind, calming, patient and thorough during an extremely emotional time. I also need to shout out the receptionist (sorry idk your name!) for juggling multiple emotional humans with their fur babies with ease. Her responses could easily escalate a situation but she handled all of them with care. After Moose came home I could literally smell the love all over him from being hospitalized the night before. He surely did not lack in attention while away. The entire care team are professional, caring and get the job done. I can't thank you enough, it will never be forgotten. Moose is better now and we will appreciate our time with him. I have been in the medical field for 12 years and can testify this team is top tier. Thank you. read more

We brought my dog in three weeks ago to urgent care. We saw Dr Meredith and we feel that she did an excellent job of examining her and finding her pain. We were very happy with the front desk and also with our call, being able to let them know we were on our way so they were expecting us. I love that we were put straight into a room because my dog isn't good with other dogs. It was such a nice exam room with two nice chairs and a window. The medical assistant was great as well. I emailed the clinic five days ago about surgery for my dog and hadn't heard back so I called in to the clinic. Five days is a long time to wait while you're worried about your pet. The receptionist's tone was exceptionally flippant, she repeatedly cut me off while I was providing information, and she offered no recognition or apology for the lack of response. The interaction with her truly soured my experience when it would have been SO easy for her to validate my experience and express concern and then everything would have been cordial. I cant speak to the medical staff or the care team but the receptionist (and/or office manager) needs to do a better job communicating with owners and fielding inquiries. The receptionist seems like she would be better suited to a non customer facing role. If the email is not monitored it should not be on the website and phone calls preferred should be stated. read more

Unfortunately I recently had to send my Basset off to the big playground in the sky. She had a ruptured gallbladder which led to pancreatitis. They ran the tests and assured me there was no way we could have seen this coming or done anything to prevent it, which was something we needed to know so we didn't spend the rest of our lives wondering if there was something more we could have done. The tests weren't cheap, but they were well worth the money for the peace of mind they provided. Normally we have a service come to our house for this, so our loved ones can pass away peacefully in familiar surroundings, but she was in such pain that this wasn't an option. Our biggest concern was that she would be put to sleep on a sterile metal table surrounded by terrifying strangers, but they have a special room set aside in their office, which is away from other animals barking and which provides a calming experience for both the animals and owners. They were very sympathetic and professional about it. It broke our hearts having to let her go, but but at least she found some peace and wasn't additionally traumatized by the experience. read more

I have very mixed feelings about our experience at 1st Pet Veterinary Centers, but unfortunately, the negative far outweighs the positive. While they did ultimately help our dog recover from a bone lodged in her throat, the way they handled the situation left a very bad taste in our mouths. The moment we walked in, it felt like their first priority wasn't our dog's well-being, but rather securing payment. Before even assessing her condition, they immediately asked for a credit card and pressured us into signing forms allowing them to charge extravagant fees before providing any real treatment. We were already in an emotional state, desperate to get help for our pet, and they clearly took advantage of that distress to push unnecessary and extremely expensive procedures. They heavily pressured us to authorize hospitalization that would have cost an outrageous $4,000 per day--something we later realized was completely unnecessary. It felt like their goal was to rack up the bill as much as possible rather than provide the most reasonable care. If we hadn't questioned their recommendations, we would have ended up with an astronomical bill for treatment that our dog didn't even need. To their credit, they did manage to remove the bone and help our dog recover, which we are grateful for. However, the overall experience felt more like dealing with a high-pressure sales team than a compassionate veterinary center. If you go here, be extremely cautious about what you're agreeing to and don't be afraid to push back on excessive charges. read more

Horribly overpriced and didn't resolve ANYTHING! They wouldn't even see my cat until they checked credit limit on account, sent me home with 7 pills totaling over $32 and when I asked them to approve a Chewy order to get pills at a reduced price, they wouldn't approve order. Chewy charges $8 for 90 100 mg capsules of Gabapentin and they charged me about $25 for 4 capsules. They just called to let me know that they would decline order as they don't get any money if it's ordered from Chewy. They are clearly just in it for profit. I spent almost $800 there yesterday for a few tests. I'm absolutely disgusted with this place!!!!! read more

What a wonderful, refreshing experience we had at 1st pet after a horrible experience at a different emergency animal vet just a couple of hours before. Upon entering we were brought back to an exam room right away and the tech did her assessment. The tech was very open and forthcoming stating that they were full and there will be a wait. We didn't mind, as we understood. A little while later the vet came in and we explained what happened, she did her assessment and gave us her advice and treatment plan. After a whole the tech came back in gave our dog a shot of pain medication, and thoroughly explained the plan of care. She made sure we understood and we left feeling relieved that we found a place with kind, compassionate people who took the time to not only care about our dog but us as well. 1st Pet will be our ER vet of choice when needed. read more

I was an emergency walk in. My poor baby was suffering. They charged me 2k to eval, take X-rays and put her on fluids. I found my baby dead this morning. She ended up bleeding out. When I left the clinic yesterday there was no concern from any of the staff about my dog's condition. She was supposed to make a full recovery. It's apparent that they were wrong and they should've just told me the truth about my dogs condition so I could've put her down instead of finding her body this morning. Now I'm out 2k and my poor baby suffered all night and then died. read more

If we could give 1st Pet Vet - Mesa and Chandler 10 stars we would! Five years ago our beloved flat coated retriever, Winston tore both his ACL's and meniscus. He had to have double TPLO surgery and we chose Dr. Dan Guastella. Dr. G did an awesome job and got our boy fixed up. After Winston recuperated for a bit, my husband and I thought it would be a good idea to start him on PT rehabilitation. Our Winston enjoyed going weekly for his underwater treadmill and laser treatments. He absolutely knew when his rehab day was. He would be prancing around the house excited, we could just about hear him say, are we leaving yet?!?! The rehab team at Mesa is AWESOME. He loved them all so much. Kayla, Krista, Trinity, Tat and Melissa all worked with him. You could tell how much they loved him, too. This past Friday our world was shattered when we discovered our boy had cancer all over his poor little body. The amount of grief this has caused us is unbearable. You see, we tried to grow our family and after many failed attempts, we decided to be ok with being dog parents. Our boy was with us as we went through that long and heartbreaking journey and he comforted me many nights when I was depressed. We had been going in and out of 1st Pet this last month to see what was going on with him and every time, Krista would come out to see him and take him back to say hi to the rest of the rehab team. She even said he felt like he was hers. There is nothing more than amazing praises to her and the rehab team and Dr. Heather Lindgren. While our hearts are completely broken, we're so grateful 1st Pet was part of our family for all these years. Thank you for the beautiful flower arrangement. Came here twice, two days in First time my dog was misdiagnosed. Next day had to come back, waited 3 hours to then get an absolutely outrageous price quote (but we love our animals), I asked for reconsideration and then waited another hour, meanwhile my dog is bleeding all over the floor. $275 just to walk in. $475 for an x-ray. The first visit I declined some services based on how they were (mis)diagnosing, 2nd visit they are throwing in my face that I "refused" this service. Seriously, disappointed and considering legal advice on this one. read more

My experience with Dr. Guastella and the Mesa location staff exceeded my expectations, and I am very highly critical and over-protective. My background is as a NICU RN, with a Master's in Clinical Research, so I can be a challenging pet parent. I have a barely 4lb Pomeranian that we adopted and were looking for the right Vet for a spay. She has a genetic predisposition to a potential bleeding disorder, so not only did I want a vet that was familiar with the protocols, tests and preventative treatments for this disorder, VwF, I also wanted a vet that specialized in minimally invasive spay techniques to minimize chances of bleeding and pain. I interviewed 6 other veterinary surgeons prior to Dr. Guastella (one of which previously performed laparoscopic spays on 2 of my other Pomeranians), and ended up choosing him to trust my tiny little lady to. While my pup, Scarlett, was too small for a lap. spay, Dr. Guastella still offered to perform the most minimally invasive spay he could offer her. Of my 8 pom lady's (currently have 6) that I have had spayed - Scarlett's recovery was the best, as was her incision! The tiniest incision. It never swelled or even bruised (which is normal and expected in the first couple of days). Within two hours of surgery she was smiling, going potty, asking for food. She never showed any signs of discomfort. Her recovery was beautiful and seamless. At 2 weeks post-op you can barely even see the incision. See pictures. I cannot recommend Dr. Guastella enough! Furthermore, the staff was incredible. They not only made Scarlett who tends to be a little shy (she was re-homed from a breeder to us at a year, in Feb, due to her genetic issues) 100% comfortable and happy there. Then they went above and beyond - when I mentioned my other pom lady that was at the appt with her - was a 'quarantine' pup - the staff offered to go out of their way to give her love and socialize her. My other pom, Jade, came home right before quarantine so wasn't properly socialized, initially. My little Jade had a wonderful time at the consult, even when they took her to the back away from me, and at the follow-up after the spay - they remembered Jade and offered to take her and socialize her again. Above and beyond to create a positive association for a little pom-lady that wasn't even a patient. I am very grateful for my experience with Dr. Guastella and the staff! Well done! read more

Took my dog in for a possible UTI and blockage and ended up leaving with just his collar in hand and a big bill. My two year old healthy dog had trouble peeing so we took him in on Sunday due to everything else being closed. The doctor inserted a catheter, not sedated, and ended up tearing his bladder wide open.Which intern, caused his stomach cavity to fill with urine. They told us it would take $9800 to fix most likely more money to keep him there for two days. She also informed me that this might not actually work . I told her I thought she should fix it for free because it was her fault and I got a bunch of doctor covering her ass talk. So my wife and I had to make the terrible decision of euthanizing our two-year-old wonderful beautiful family member. She even charged me almost $200 to euthanize him. You think they would have thrown that in. When we raised the issue while checking out, they said they would give us a 10% discount because my dog died that day. As a pet owner and advocate for 40 years I questioned their methods and tactics. My family and I can't believe this happened over Dr error. We are extremely devastated and still in shock . read more

1st pets has failed us. Tonight we arrived at the Mesa location at 10:45 with our dog who had been severely torn up and was bleeding heavily.  They had no doctor there in spite of the fact their website says their staff is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year.  They sent us to their Chandler location which had a 2 hour wait. Perhaps even worse I had taken our dog to the Mesa location when she was bitten in the chin by a baby rattler. I called to let them know what happened & that we were coming. They kept her there and suggested I go home while they gave her anti-venom & monitored her.  The drive from our house was 30 minutes. It was approximately one hour after she had been bitten that I discovered what had happened. I was almost home when they called me to say they were using a beta brand of anti-venom & they needed my signature to give it to her!  So, by that time it had been at least 2 hours since she had been bitten. When I called to tell them she had been bitten wouldn't you think they would have immediately administered the anti-venom? I had to get home, print out the form they emailed me, sign it, scan it into my computer,  & email it back. So, at that point it was over 2.5 hours! She required 4 doses of anti-venom which cost me an arm & a leg. Would she have only required one dose had they actually been paying attention to their job? read more

Have brought my dog in here several times. They are expensive, but I thought that they provided excellent care so I didn't mind. Today that changed. While he was there being examined for one issue, we called and asked that they look at a second issue as well. They said no problem. Picked him up and got him home and was going over discharge instructions and noticed that there was no mention of the second issue. I called back to follow up and they said that they forgot to check the second issue but if we brought him back they would check. Drove the 30 minutes back to the clinic only to be told that they would need to charge an additional $105 to examine him. I clarified that we were back due to their error and they didn't budge. I encourage you to look elsewhere if you are looking for a vet that cares more for your furry friends than their bank account. read more

These guys did not listen to what we told them- the dog ate a hard plastic toy and is now unable to poop and howls with pain. We spent over $700.00 for x-rays and exam which was no help at all. Brought him back the next day and still no answers, diagnosis or idea what is wrong. Dog is lethargic, no appetite. Next day the dog started vomiting bloody phlegm, diarrhea. We're going somewhere else for sure. He obliviously has a blockage. These guys are worthless read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE We only came here because it was 4th of July and everywhere was closed. We took our 14 yr old Chihuahua because she seemed like she was intermittently agitated and breathing quickly. (She's old so we didn't expect great news) When we got there things went quick, they checked us in and got us in a room quickly. The technician came in about 1mins later and we explained to her what was going on. She's ended up saying they need to take our dog in the back so the doctor could check her. The technician leaves with our dog and not even 2mins later another person comes in and says: Hey I'm going to give you a lot of information here. So the doctor says she thinks we should do a critical sheet (what does that even mean) and so that the doctor can get started we need a $900 deposit. At this point we asked, uhhh so what do you mean? Why? What's the reasoning behind the urgency of this "critical sheet"? She responded with I don't know she just asked us to get that from you so the doctor can get started. So we naturally declined, we signed a paper saying we declined (they made us sign that we declined) because I'm not paying anything without knowing exactly what's happening and why. Anyway the tech left and like 15 mins later the doctor came in (again be cause we declined) and she said that our dog had a heart murmur and probably fluid in her lungs. (Seriously? How hard was it to tell us that before asking us for a $900 "deposit to get started") We told the doctor to give us a min to talk about. She said ok I'll be back in a min. The doctor left, in that time our normal vet called us, we explained the situation and said that they'd see our dog. We trust them more so figured we'd go there instead. At that point, we were still waiting in the room and the doctor hadn't come back. We waited an hour in the room, during which we got up and told the staff at the front we're leaving and to please bring our dog twice and they just said ok I'll ask the doctor. Excuse me? Ask the doctor about taking my own dog? Eventually, after us getting upset they sent the doctor back to our room and said they put our dog on oxygen. Even though we signed we DECLINED. They said well we aren't charging you for that, and we said that's not the point, it's unethical to do anything without asking or in this case doing it even though we had declined. They then tried to scare us into thinking that our dog would likely not live much longer if we had them take her off the oxygen. Finally, they brought our dog back we paid ($250 btw) and we left. We went to see our vet, they ran their tests which included an X-ray and blood work. They said that our dog doesn't need oxygen just some medicine and rest. At this point she's doing way better and our vet says she'll make a full recovery in a week or so. read more

Excellent care. Everyone at this office is so kind and helpful. They sent us a condolence card which was so appreciated. We've come to this location a few times and every time they make the experience a little easier. We had our family dog pass away recently... We brought her in for an emergency where they put her to sleep. This was extremely difficult on our family but they gave us a private area to say our goodbyes and gave us as much time as we needed. We chose to have them picked up at the clinic where we had her in euthanized Unfortunately they got mailed out and to find out later it was sent to the wrong address and now we cannot retrieve our pets remembrances. My grandmas dog Izzy came here because she had a gash by her leg last night at 10:30 and the vet 1st Pet Veterinary Centers. They decided to make them waiting in a waiting room then they moved them cause the poor dog was bleeding out everywhere which then they started shutting all the lights off mind you they close at 11 but they have to help my dog. Besides we came before 11 then they put a DIAPER on my bleeding dog from her stomach when she clearly needed stitches and was trying to make my grandma pay 1200 for the total cost which then they brought it down to 300 for meds... We had to wait and take her to a better vet where they ACTUALLY put stitches on the poor dog instead of expecting her to bleed out.. Shows how much mercy these people have for animals RIDICULOUS. The dog could've died on the spot and this place wouldn't have done crap. read more

This place is very nice/new/high tech feeling. As the pandemic goes things are weird - call from the parking lot and they let you in. But not everyone seems to be doing this. There are no "park here and call" parking spots like their other location(s) so I'm sure this contributes to this. Kept my pet here until they could see my cat. Not bad. Other place had an 8hr wait. This one had like a 90min wait. Just to be seen is $200 which may or may not be good as your mileage may vary as this is an emergency vet. If you can wait probably better to go to your primary. read more

After a bad experience at another animal hospital we brought our dog here. We were brought to an exam room immediately. The tech came in and triaged our pet. S about tome later the veterinarian came in to do an assessment. She diagnosed the problem as a pinched nerve in our dog's back. She ordered an injection of pain medicine and some medication going forward. We were pleased with 1stPet. They acted in a timely manner. They were compassionate and innovative. They were going to fax a report to our regular veterinarian. I highly recommend 1stPet for your pet's emergency needs. read more

After calling several vet clinics and animals hospitals that had zero availability for same day appointments, I called 1st Pet Vet. They were able to answer all of my questions in depth, calling my nerves. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. I don't remember the tech's name but both the tech and Dr. Nixon were absolutely amazing! My pup had a very upset stomach and had an accident while in the room, without messing a beat Dr. Nixon went above and beyond and got a stool sample. My pup end up falling asleep while we were waiting to be seen in spite of initially being very nervous as it was his first vet experience. I credit this to their kind staff and the quiet room they placed us in. I received a price quote prior to having any services performed which was great. Pricing is very reasonable and they have flexible options to accommodate owner's needs. I was given recommendations for food, supplements and so on.
