I believe I heard about 1DollarScan through a podcast (The Minimalists?). I'm am in the process of organizing my books and papers and thought to digitize a handful of books that are difficult to come by that I don't need right now. Dollar scan is inexpensive, as the name suggests. I had 7 books of varying lengths done for something like $50. You get what you pay for -- in a way. Their work is quite good, but I had paid an extra few $ each to have the book titles used as the PDF titles. Multiple typos per title in some cases (though these were genealogy books and did have some unphonetic last names). Nothing I couldn't, and didn't, fix myself upon download. Note that it takes a bit of work to get the stuff ready to send in. You have to count how many pages and see how many "sets" it is, and then, when you place your order, decide what add-ons you'd like. I sent my stuff well in advance of my scan date and had it back on time or early. I'm quite satisfied and would definitely use their service again. I had long wanted to find a way to get scans of my books that I could read and mark up with my iPad/Apple Pencil, akin to what I have always done with pen and print books. Most of my books don't offer Kindle versions, and even it they did, Kindle is horrible for serious nom-fiction reading where you want to mark up. Kindle's markup system is tedious and very constraining. Here's how I use 1dollarscan's PDF scans. I import them to the Notability app on my 12.9" iPad Pro, and then read and mark-up with my Apple Pencil. This experience is akin from moving from CDs to music subscription services. Zero space, maximum flexibility. Opens up a whole new world. I'm traveling to NYC next week, and I'm taking the equivalent of 50# of big book volumes with me, nestled weightlessly onto my iPad where I can read them anywhere in NYC without lugging the big, heavy books around. read more

As I have moved from place-to-place over the years, I never enjoyed packing up my books. I jumped onto the Kindle express early so I could dump hundreds of pounds of books onto less-nomadic souls. However, what to do with books that haven't made it to the computer age? 1DollarScan is the answer. I gathered some books, sent them off to 1DollarScan and, in a few weeks, they turned them into pdf files and Kindle-worthy files. The pricing is not expensive but it can add up if, like, me, you've shipped them a big box of books. You won't get the books back, though, because they slice them up to load and scan them accurately. For some people, giving up a physical library that they can see and touch (and smell) is unthinkable. I have always been super impressed with both the quality of their work and their customer service. This is a family run business as I was able to recently meet the owner face to face when I was in San Jose. You can drop off books if you're there as well! These folks are the BEST! This business is WONDERFUL. I needed to convert my books to digital form, and this is the best service for the best price I found. From the first set of books I sent, customer service was FANTASTIC. When one book was unreadable on my Kindle, Akiko in customer service worked with me through several attempts to correct the problem (due to yellowed pages in the original, not to anything they did wrong). I am very grateful for the help they gave me scanning the forty years of books I had collected. This was, for me, something of a stressful process given my love for my collection which had been carefully bought and curated over the years. But they did a wonderful job churning out beautiful PDFs of my books. To my surprise, my favorite part of this change from physical copy to digital copy is now I can take them all with me wherever I go. I used to fill my suitcase with books because I never knew what I would want/need to read while traveling. Now, I just take my iPad. However, you need to know -- and they do not tell you this upfront -- that your name will be embedded into the PDFs they create for you. That means that you cannot share the PDFs they make without possibly violating copyright law. What's more, if your digital device is ever lost or stolen with your 1DollarScan PDFs on it, then those PDFs -- with your name on it -- can be passed on to others and you will be the one ultimately responsible should a publisher find out and seek to sue you for copyright infringement. Once again: 1DollarScan offers a good service. But they embed YOUR name into the PDFs they create, not theirs, so you will be the one responsible should a publisher ever seek to sue you for distribution of copyrighted material. read more

This is perhaps one of the coolest businesses that exists. If you are a platinum member, they will scan a box full of books a month into searchable PDFs that they email back to you. Not only that, but the customer service is *incredible.* Once, my husband left a pay stub in a book, and they mailed it back to us with two beautiful pieces of oragami paper and a note explaining where it came from. I had the nicest experience with this service when I walked in for scanning a few documents. They usually don't get walk-ins and even though I went around lunchtime, I was told to wait 5 minutes and was promptly taken care. Tatsuya was fantastic, explaining how it works. Scans are done per "set". Although I didn't mind having each of the 10 documents counted as a separate set, he suggested I can merge some of them into one set, which made sense. He took crisp color scans of the documents, making sure to scan the documents in full size, and emailed me the link to scans on google drive. Everything done in 10 minutes! read more
