Came for an event and fell in love with this place. I rarely come to Berkeley, but this place was a pleasant surprise. Parking was easy to find, spacious and neat with so much educational information on the walls. This coffee shop is mission minded to support refugees which is so beautiful! I wanted to try a new coffee shop, so I ventured a bit further from campus to try 1951 Coffee Company. Even with dozens of boba and coffee shops nearby, 1951 Coffee Company was still packed with students around weekend lunchtime. I need a mid-day pick-me-up, and the honey lavender latte was calling my name. I noticed that I was charged an extra $0.25 for the to-go cup, which I suppose is good for minimizing waste but still came as a bit of a surprise on top of the nearly $8 latte. The latte was prepared within minutes, and I took my drink to-go. Sweet and creamy, the latte nicely balanced subtle lavender flavor with a hint of sweetness - without tasting overly floral. Hopefully I won't be in as much of a hurry on my next visit and can enjoy my coffee in the cute cafe. read more

There's always a lot of seating available early--the setup is quite large with outdoor tables, two or so chairs, and a lot of high-top seating. 1951 Coffee has a very working cafe vibe. I noticed a lot more working professionals than students, but I do take my coffee very early in the morning. They're laptop friendly and have WiFi as well. The coffee quality is quite good and strong. The lattes come with two espresso shots, which I appreciate, since most chains only contain one (which makes the coffee weak and overly milky--this shop doesn't have that problem). The syrups aren't anything special, but they have a decent flavor and aren't overpowering, which I like. The recipes here are definitely well-balanced. The employees are always very helpful, friendly, and welcoming! They're also a nonprofit, which is nice. I love a high quality small business. The pastry availability is pretty standard. I can't say I'd recommend ordering one, unless you're really in the mood for a mochi donut. Overall, I'd recommend this as a coffee shop and wfh spot, and I would definitely return again. read more

I'm surprised I haven't wrote a review for this place. I love 1951 and it's mission behind it. Supporting refugees by employing them and giving the work experience they need to thrive in a new country, I'm here for it. I'm always greeted with a smile, never turned away. They're on Snackpass so you can order beforehand if that's your thing. You can order with the cashier or order on their one kiosk they have. Many of their drinks can be decaffeinated which is amazing. I just had the decaf mocha and it was delish, great pick me up. Great to see that they often have more than two options for gluten free pastries. Hopefully they can add more and have vegan options as well. Just like any other coffee spot that I'm familiar with they do charge extra for their non-dairy milks. My favorite drinks from 1951 are their Strawberry Lychee Matcha Latte and their Honey Lavendar Latte. It's a good study cafe in my opinion with free wifi, a few outlets, and a good amount of seats. They had pretty good reviews, so I thought why not! I ordered an iced matcha (+ oat milk, vanilla syrup) and a matcha mochi donut. Both items impressed me soooo much!! The matcha was more fragrant than I had expected. The sweetness was just right and the vanilla syrup helped to enhance the matcha's flavor profile. The mochi donut was just the right texture, and most importantly, wasn't too sweet. Inside, the store's actually super clean! I ordered on a kiosk, but they also have a regular cashier if you'd rather talk to an employee. My total was close to $12-13 which felt pretty reasonable. Would definitely recommend! read more

A fantastic company with an excellent mission to support refugees, which feels more important than ever. The drinks here are specialty coffee quality with fun new flavors that the baristas often contribute to. The cafe space itself has posters and graphics about the refugee resettlement process and really drives home how long and difficult their journey to the United States can be. I love a company that truly does the work in addition to talking about it - 1951 Coffee is a great example of using coffee and community to financially support refugees. They need to change their hours to longer. Store gets very busy and slow service due to the reason. Also, their coffee is sooooo watered down. I'm assuming that they had made my drink (I got an iced latte for here) and not called it out because by the time I got it, there was water layered at the top from the ice cubes. Honey lavender latte and honey oat latte are delicious!! I get both with oat milk and the espresso is strong with the perfect sweetness shining through. They are both coffee drinks that are on the sweeter side but not sickly sweet if you know what I mean. The staff are nice and friendly. People are always studying here since it's right by campus. I got a really nice deal off of Snackpass for 1951, so I ordered the Iced Honey Lavender Latte. Service took a bit longer than expected because I'd visited during rush hour, and it was hard to find seating because it's a relatively small and cozy cafe with a lot of students staying for extended periods of time to work or study (though to be fair, there was plenty of outdoor seating, but it had been raining earlier that day so nobody wanted to sit outside). Everything aside, I thought the drink was really great. It is on the stronger side with 2 shots of espresso, but it's balanced with milk and lavender syrup (all of which you can adjust to your liking). A latte true to its name; you could really taste the different layers of the drink. It was a lovely treat, and I'll definitely be back to try the matcha latte and the honey oat latte! There are multiple options for coffee around Berkeley, but the service and quality of 1951 coffee in unmatched. If you have to make a coffee choice, I recommend taking a visit.
