The two ladies who run this place, one is the chef, are so friendly and hospitable. They came out to greet us and provided great recommendation. Incredible food and service. Plenty of beers on tap. Easy to find parking and walking distance to other parts of town. The tomatoe basil soup was divine and burgers are great. The place is nice and clean with lots of tables. Definitely a gem for this town. read more

Drove into Bishop Friday night and just wanted a small dinner. Luckily, we found this spot. SERVICE - totally 5 stars in itself! The lady and guy at the bar who helped us were so incredibly friendly and personable. You can just tell they're good people and probably come across interesting people working there. FOOD - YUM! Their simple tomato basil soup and chicken tortilla soup hit the spot and was just what I needed after a long drive. I was about to let my stomach take over and order more food because so much looked really appetizing, buy I knew I couldn't handle it. We will be back though to try out their grilled cheese sandwiches! Dessert was delicious too! Cheesecake STUFFED with a raspberry danish?! What mastermind thought of this??? AND they had huckleberry flavored ice cream that I am a sucker for. AMBIANCE - Quaint spot that basically has 2 rooms to hang out. One at the entrance with the bar and high boys, the other room with just seating that looks good for reserved parties. Since it was Friday night, they had live music, which was nice to have. Very cool vibes and friendly staff and owners. Food being delivered around us looked spectacular, especially the dogs!! But we came for the famous brisket on pretzel bread with a bowl of Mac and cheese! The brisket was slow cooked to perfection, hints of brown sugar as the meat melted in my mouth, lettuce tomato rounded it all together. Thanks for having us. read more

WOW wow wow!! Tiny cozy welcoming service. The grilled Reuben was tasty, the bread was sourdough grilled ideally!! The kraut was flavofull. It was a good sammy! The kapow!! The polish on a roll with Coleslaw and pickles!!! That thing was ridiculously delicious!! I could have taken one to go. It was so great it has me craving. The coleslaw was such a perfect match. We read good reviews about 1903 and decided to have lunch there recently. I noticed it was clean and welcomed by the staff. My husband ordered the Brisket sandwich since it had good reviews He had potato salad as his side. I love grilled cheese sandwich's so I ordered that with a side of potato salad. He loved his sandwich and my grilled cheese was so good. The potato salad was ok, I wouldn't order it again. The service was great, the owner came to our table and asked how everything was. Stopped by with my boyfriend on our way back from Lake Tahoe. And let me say that as soon as you walk in the atmosphere feels nice. We got helped by Melissa at the bar and she was so nice and her energy was amazing. We got two basil tomato bowls and two grilled cheese. 4 of us had lunch there on a Saturday at 12:30pm before heading to the airport. Mostly empty. very friendly owner+employees. Nice pool table, games for kids and several TV's with cartoons, sports, news on--your choice to watch. My wife and I shared a Grilled brisket sando "Rachael special". It was tasty but could have had more meat-we added a house salad which was a pretty good deal for $5. Adult kids had Guinness brats (server couldn't tell us why it was called "Guinness"-LOL). The huge selection of toppings (up to 6 each) for the Brats made them both smile. Beer selection very good and nice and cold. Prices reasonable and food out pretty quickly. Ran a little late going into town and the coffee spot didn't have enough food, so we headed across the street! Great place, Melissa was the best waitress! She gave you a run down of the menu, helped us choose what we should get. Sourdough is better than the roll! Music was very upbeat, they had scooby doo playing on the TV as well. Very disappointing. Food was average quality. The portions were a joke. Tiny hot dogs with cold soggy bread and a pathetically small side for $15. I left starving still and went to carls Jr for burger after. At least have an adult size portion for the main entrée or a actual sides like onion rings fries or potato skin or chicken strips, not a sampler size cup of macaroni or mac and cheese. I'm never going back here and telling everyone I know to avoid this place. read more

We were looking for sandwich shops on our way back from Mammoth. Schat's was closed, and I asked my 11 yo daughter to find us a backup place. She found 1903 Taphouse. It's a small place, and very fun. The staff is kind, helpful, and friendly. The bartender taught my daughter how to properly throw darts. Our waitress was patient while we were contemplating multiple brisket sandwich options. We ultimately went with the original brisket sandwich, and it did not disappoint. Meat was tender, juicy, and savory. The vinegar coleslaw was great and better than the mayo version other places serve. Our server was an older lady and she was kind as well. I'm not sure if this place is family-owned, but they sure treated us like it was. read more

Dropped in for lunch on a Sunday. The food was great. I opted for a brisket sandwich and my wife had a brisket Ruben sandwich. Both were great, had a choice of several sides with the sandwich. The staff was friendly and attentive. They had several televisions tuned to the NFL package showing several different games. Ok so it isn't really a restaurant it's more like a hangout spot for beer - but we saw that they had lobster lac n cheese in reviews - well they didn't have that, and they have a very small menu - HOWEVER, what came out of the tiny kitchen was made with love and we enjoyed it. The bartender was slow to bring our second pint, but when he did it was with a smile. The woman in the kitchen is a Sweetie - she was happy to talk with us when she brought out the food - sorry, no food pics - we were so hungry when we got there, we just wolfed down our burgers and brats - what a friendly spot read more

Visited this place a few times on trips to the Eastern Sierras. Very good food, especially the brisket. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. They also have a good beer selection, although I can rarely partake since I'm usually about to start the last leg of a 5 hour drive. read more

Not sure it would be my first choice in eating spots in town though, especially considering the prices.

We started with the wedge salad topped with delicious blue cheese and all the fixings. Their version adds a raspberry vinaigrette, which I was skeptical about at first but turned out to be the perfect touch--refreshing and flavorful. Of course, we couldn't skip the ribeye steak. It was cooked to perfection, seasoned just right, and paired with a classic baked potato that rounded out the plate beautifully. I also ordered a cup of their corn chowder--oh my gosh, it was outstanding! Rich, flavorful, and just the right amount of sweetness. The service was every bit as impressive as the food. Our waitress Wendy was friendly and attentive, and the bussing staff had impeccable timing, always keeping our water glasses full & are empties whisked away. This place is always a treat and truly a must-stop if you're ever in the Bishop area. Thank you once again to the Back Alley crew for another wonderful dinner--it never disappoints!

My fiancée had a burger and he said it was also cooked perfectly. The only issue we had was there was a large company party going on at the same time and it's just one big room so we had to listen to all of their speeches. I felt like I couldn't even talk because it would be interrupting their party. Would still definitely come back here.

As other customers have commented, they make you feel like you're an inconvenience and charge you for it. Yet wait for it -because my friend went in today the very same day on Mother's Day totally different group of people and she had a bad experience too! On Mother's Day, I ordered an arugula salad (it wasn't on the menu yet I saw others eating it). It looked amazing, and I substituted the prosciutto for pesto/olive tapenade--great veggie option. Yes, the owners should make this a menu item. I also ordered a delicious Muscat dessert wine and a cupcake, and everything was pretty awesome. I asked why it wasn't on the menu, and they said people just come in knowing what to order. Several times I've ordered something from the menu, only to be told it's not available, which is confusing because then it comes back on the menu, and they get annoyed when you order something that is supposed to be served. Anyway, everything was great; I was treating myself and happy to splurge... until... Right after I received my food, the server immediately asked for my card. I requested her to bring the bill at the end, as usual, since I wasn't prepared to order more, and I thought the amount was enough. The rose frozen yogurt looked yum, so I decided to use a small sample cup instead of the plastic ones, as the girls were in the back. I didn't want to bother them and thought it would be a fun way to avoid waste. She rushed out with another server, almost making a scene--embarrassing, as I was about to take a photo and mention folks should eat there. She asked me to pay for the sample. I decided not to, and I'm glad I sent it back because the secret salad, not on the menu, was $20, and the wine along with the cupcake turned out to be nearly $40. Every place I've worked at that makes the customer happy usually gets a great tip! You'd think a sample wouldn't be a big deal. I definitely let her know, especially since it was already pricey. Sadly, this isn't the first time I've had service that's just not very nice. I want to let the owners know I love your location and your place, but the service is often rude. The blonde server was sweet and great, but the other "manager" was not. Many people I try to bring here cringe- we like the place, but they say the service is rude. The women make you feel uncomfortable with disapproving looks. Especially today, it's a day to honor mothers. If not, you'll hear from us with our tip. Tip: Would be a 5, but the energy of the servers drops it to a 2; the food raises it to a 3. Owners, you should know. I didn't leave a cash tip-- would have left $10 to be treated well. That's my tip. Every time we go back, we wonder if we want to deal with a mean server. Every time. then my friend, who also went there today for Mother's Day with her entire family they have a huge family. They brought four kids for adult adults and this is what she told me after I shared my review. "That's so crazy that you sent that they were so rude to me today the dark haired lady when I asked her what cupcake flavors she had left. It was like I was pulling teeth to get the flavors from her service is always crappy here." Owners please talk to your staff. They are just not nice.
