Atmosphere great. Food great. Dining experience great. Restroom arrangement not so great, and somewhat confusing. Otherwise, five stars.

I am not a person to speak bad to or about anything or anyone. But I am very disappointed after lunch today. Everything on my plate had very little to no flavor. The only thing worth eating was the cheese Queso . The rice was mushy and just not good. The shredded chicken was very dry & needed some seasoning and flavor. The beans were plain and lacked flavor. If I were the cook I would not put rice in the chimichanga. I would boil / cook the chicken in some sauce / seasoning. I would add seasoning and a ham hawk to the pot of beans. The salsa needed more garlic and cilantro. I only leave this message to help and hopefully give some good advice. We always enjoy eating here. Just not this plate this time. read more

We ate here Friday night after a 20 minute wait at 6:30 in Tyler which is decent. Julie got the cheese plate as an appetizer which was amazing and her main was shrimp skewers with greens and she loved the collard greens so much she wants the recipe. Something about the brown sugar, maple syrup reduction. I got the poboy with grilled shrimp but it was all cold. So chef Julie gave them a 5star and I gave 2star so it's a 3for now. We did see other items we want to try so we will be back. read more

We had not been here for a couple of months as it was our go-to place. Always good service and great food. Decided to go in today,Saturday afternoon. So much has changed in a couple of months. 1) Atmosphere has changed a lot. Used to be upbeat and enjoyable. Kind of gloomy today even tho nice outside. 2) the place was filthy. Bar was a mess as dirty glasses etc stacked at one end. Nobody attempted to clean up. 1 bartendress and busboy(?} behind the bar. General cleanliness should looked at as food and paper napkins under many tables. She was busy and only bar person for entire restaurant. Maybe because of not enough help these days as we did not see the regular bartenders that were always there. Bathroom (mens) was filthy. With sticky floor and a sink plugged up. 3) Food was good but not as good as it used to be. Had burger and salad. It was OK. Of course we will go in again as one of our favorites. This restaurant is a gem! I had the shrimp tacos and my friend had the pork quesadilla and we were both in heaven. The food is fresh and creative and just ever so yummy. Be sure to have a meal here. I had fried lobster. The best ever. My husband had chicken enchiladas. They were good too. They did charge him an extra .99 for salsa, which was ridiculous. After having lobster all was forgiven. read more

My wife and I celebrated our 17th anniversary here tonight and first time eating here as well. When we first got into the restaurant it sounded like a Motley Crue concert. Not because of music but due to the size of the crowd and just how everything echoed. It seemed about half way into our meal the noise level was lot softer. The meal itself was outstanding. I got the cast iron enchiladas and it was great. I wish the egg on top was a little more runny but the entire dish was good. My wife got the fried chicken. It was fabulous. The collard greens were a little sweet for our liking but overall it was very solid and will be back. We may sit outside next time to avoid the noisy inside. read more

Very mediocre. Not the worst but just not great. I wanted to love it. I went out with my family and nobody loved their meal at all, from the chimichanga to the enchilada, to the bbq shrimp to the shrimp and grits. I just was so dissatisfied, the menu items lack flavor and depth. I personally ordered the bbq shrimp and the rice served with the shrimp wasn't even done at all. There was only one person on the floor, doing the hosting, serving, and bussing so it seemed like he had a bit too much on his plate although he tried. Since we didn't love any of our meals, he brought a dessert not sure what it was, some kind of bourbon Carmel cake served warm with ice cream and it was soooo good. I was shocked! So I would totally come back her just for dessert, but that's it. read more

The watermelon margaritas are to die for but plan on getting a couple as they have too much ice. They are flavorful and strong. The sandwich with Chile dipping sauce is my fav. Shrimp and grits were pretty good. Iron skillet was ok. Get the margaritas and everything tastes even better. First time at 1836 and it was super. Very unique appetizers, extensive wine list with pairing recommendations, great selection of classic drinks and innovative entree selection. Great concept but the menu needs more Texas and Tex-Mex dishes. A lot of live music through out the year.

We went to the restaurant because a political rally was supposed to be there and the rally got too big for the expected crowd so they had to change locations but I digress: We stayed for lunch as we had seen the menu online and one particular item caught our eye. My housemate and I both love lamb burgers and they had one on the menu that was a mix of 60% beef and 40% lamb with pimento cheese, butter toasted bun, grilled red onions, lettuce, tomato and dill pickles with french fries for $12.00. After we were seated, the item wasn't on the menu so we asked the waitress about it and she said it was taken off the menu. She saw our faces drop and asked us to wait a minute. The chef/owner/manager came to the table and explained that for some reason people in East Texas didn't like the idea of a lamb/beef burger (????). We told him how much we love the idea and have had it numerous times in other cities and states but have a hard time finding it in East Texas. He told us he had lamb chops in the kitchen and would butcher the chops for ground lamb, mix it with the beef and make us two lamb burgers!!!!! We asked him to nix the pimento cheese and substitute Jack cheese instead. The burgers were moist, flavorful, perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. With this being an "off menu" custom order he charged us only the $12.00/each that would normally have been charged had it been on the menu. The staff and management were gracious and attentive without being intrusive. We will go back often and spread the word as much as we can!!!! read more

Excellent, Excellent, We ate dinner there last night ( Friday) we ordered everything from chicken strips to shrimp po boy ! The staff is super friendly, kind , and courteous. Food was very tasty, well prepared and service was timely. This restaurant has a decor as homey, inviting, rustic and Texas as it's namesake. The food is a fusion between gourmet southern, Texas and Mexican. They offer a wide variety of items from steak and pork shanks to fried chicken & fried green tomatoes. I enjoyed their greens that blended savory and sweet, while my husband did not. Went tonight. Excellent. I had the braised pork shank and the flavor profile was spot on. My wife had the Iron Skillet chicken enchiladas with an over easy egg on top. Great flavors. We also had the fondue for an appetizer and tasted delicious as well. Check it out!!! read more

I went here and I was eating my food when all of the sudden a bug is crawling on my plate then just dies. It couldn't fly so it didn't fly on there and I saw it in the very beginning of my meal, the manager apologized and brought me another plate of food, and they still charged us for it. read more

Great experience! After telling my waiter it was my first time in, he was very helpful in describing and suggesting entrees and cocktails. My dinner companion had the Country Fried Yard-Bird which was a chicken breast with mashed potatoes and collard greens. My companion found it all to be delicious, and even though not a big fan of collard greens, he found these greens well seasoned and delicious! I had Dobb's Steak Fries Chimichurri; grilled skirt steak w fries, Chimichurri and queso. Steak was very tender and flavorful and was delicious w the fries! Cocktails, the Ultimate margarita and Spicy Watermelon, both perfection! Visited for the first time for my mom's bday lunch. The portions were large and therefore the cost was reasonable. Enjoyed the atmosphere and unique menu so we plan on going back for sure. Negatives: Our serve was forgetful and slow. Was told that chips "were in the oven" while we watched 3-4 other tables receive chips before us. Our food (apps, 3 meals, and dessert) were all delivered by people other than our server. Lastly, the menu at the location was missing what I was looking forward too --- white chicken green stew --- that was on their online menu. With that said, give this local place a chance. I think they are figuring it out and could be an awesome business lunch or date night spot. read more

Our waitress did a great job, she was very nice and attentive. The menu is diverse so a little something for everyone. If you like greens, the Esaw's collard greens were really good. Thought we would give this a second try tonight. First round was a burger at lunch which was good enough to warrant dinner. Tonight was disappointing. Ordered the chicken fried steak to share thinking it would be a generous potion. Asked server to bring it out on 2 plates and we were told that couldn't happen. We would have to divide potions ourselves. Our meal was delivered at least 15 min before our friends meal came to table. The portion was so small our friends kept asking if we had enough to eat. This place has pretty decent food. Unfortunately the last 4-5 times I've eaten here the service has gotten slower and slower. Today it took forever to sit, although tables were empty. Took about 10 minutes before anyone came by, finally got drinks and waited another 15 before we saw a waiter. As you can expect it took forever to get the food. Unfortunately the entree I ordered should have been listed with the appetizers. The kids meals my kids ordered had more food than both my wife and I. We waited a long time to receive the check and left hungry. I've been here 7-8 times and I think we're finally done with it. With improvement in speed of service (specifically Sunday's). This is, by far, one of my favorite places to eat in Tyler. The food is "high end" but served up in a very relaxed atmosphere and the prices are reasonable for what you are getting. I am gluten intolerant and the kitchen is ALWAYS willing to customize for me and the food is still excellent. Great place! read more

We debated on where to eat in Tyler and chose the 1836. The decor is really interesting and unique. The bathrooms are worth a look see. Functional use of space and seems to work well, but it is different. The food was excellent! I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly - tender and moist. The grits were awesome with so much flavor! The service was good but I did feel she needed to study up on the menu more and be more confident in her responses.
