The architecture & atmosphere was nice, but the food was of poor quality and our server was dingy. The scallops were "fishy" and rubbery, topped with a weird onion & green pepper glaze, no doubt to hide the age and smell of the scallops. We were charged for salads that were not served. We were served an incorrect wine selection, and when we remarked about it, they charged us for the incorrect serving as well as the correct bottle. Red Snapper was over cooked, grey, dry and tasteless, with no texture. The "Beef Wellington" was tough flank steak hidden under a soggy puff pastry with overcooked veggies. Better options in the area. Avoid this place if you expect a good meal with their prices. Overcharging, tasteless food, and poor service. read more

TL;DR food is delicious and worth the price, service is kind but slow. The atmosphere of this place is very charming. While it is "casual" you could easily dress it up and make it for a special occasion and not feel out of place. There is low lighting but we didn't have any problem reading the menus. Con: it took a while for anyone to seat us which made us wonder if it was seat yourself (it is not). Once we were seated it took a while again for us to be seen by our waitress, the hostess had to come by and ask if we had been helped yet, then she went off to find out waitress. The table next to us served as entertainment however as their waitress was bringing them some flaming cheese appetizer. The drink menu is extensive without being overwhelming. The dinner menu was the same but was seafood heavy. After we placed our drink orders again it took an unusually long time. There was a lot of apologizing on the wait staff's part at multiple tables. The salads (house or Caesar, both delicious) came out with good soft bread (you get salad and bread when you order entrees). My mother ordered the flounder special with broccoli and the carrot lemon rice and I had the seafood piccata with the snap peas and same rice. All the food we ate was amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly and everything was seasoned well. We agreed that my seafood piccata was the best dish between us, but we both enjoyed the lemon carrot rice. Ended the meal with the Creme Brûlée. The top was perfect but the custard was average compared to the rest of the meal, but still tasty, we don't regret eating it! Was here on Dec 26th. Plenty of seating. Calm and intimate ambiance, quiet enough to hold conversation. Dim lighting and candlelight. Service was awesome. I wish I remembered the server's name, but she was a gem- she even made sure our salads were prepared properly (I have a weird thing about how much my lettuce is drenched, and I was admittedly in slight diva mode about the dressing specifications that day). Appetizer - the southwestern scallop and shrimp "en brochette" was amazing, the chipotle sauce was awesome. Dipped the bread in it and...let's just say they could package and sell that alone and I would happily place an order. Salmon was cooked to perfection, with broccoli and April's potato medley it was phenomenal. Peach mango daiquiri was quite tasty. Also- there is outdoor seating, but it was too cold for us to indulge that evening. There is also a full bar to hang at, if that's more your scene. If you are stopping by for lunch, lamb gyros are a must. Pitas are made in-house. Freshly made tzatziki sauce and of course the lamb is also cooked in house on a traditional spit. For dinner there are many options. Chicken, beef, lamb, fish and pasta. Fish is always a great choice. Some options can be a pricier due to the fact that it is fresh, not frozen. I have never been disappointed. Large wine selection that covers a wide price range. The best is you can always rely on a Texas greeting from Kelly or Sally. We were in town for our sons graduation from Baylor. After reading the reviews we thought this would be a fabulous meal and booked a table for 6. The hostess, Sophia was as sweet as could be , and our waiter did a great job. The food was the let down. We started with appetizers ,Saganaki and Dolmades which is traditional Greek . My husband and I grew up in Chicago and frequent Greektown and all of the wonderful Greek food there. Other than the Saganaki , the rest of the "Mediterranean food " was very American(ized) ! Chicken piccata and beef Wellington? A couple in our party ordered the beef Wellington and it had what appeared to be Pillsbury crescent roll on top of a few meager pieces a very tough , overcooked beef bites. The lamb shoulder was touted as a specialty but three pieces and two were gristle and inedible- sadly this was a younger person in our party and they didn't mention this until we left. Chip and Joanna Gaines actually came in while we were eating!!! Kid you not. While are eating, my wife looks up, gasps, and whispers, "There's Joanna!" I look up, it's Joanna Gaines, with Chip following right behind. I make a point not to stare. I text my mom who demanded I get a pic with them, but I didn't want to disrupt their evening - even though it probably would've been no biggie. They were seated at a table immediately adjacent to us along with another couple. Our first and only real-life experience of the famous Gaines couple only served to confirm how normal and down-to-earth they really are; the exact same presence and personality you see on the show. Our waitress coyly chuckled, "Dining with the elites tonight?" Too funny. With that story out of my system, on the actual restaurant. Color this foodie impressed. The number of intriguing menu choices made ordering quite difficult. There were at least 5 other things I wanted to try. I went with the lamb shank w/ mushroom gravy, and I'm very happy with that choice. It was excellent. In second place was the Orange Roughy, followed by Beef Wellington (their unique version of it is actually medallions with pastry crust over the top, or something like that. Not the classic wellington, but interesting nonetheless). We had fried oysters as an app an Sangria to drink. My wife got the special: lump crab meat stuffed between two corn-meal fried Mahi fillets. I took my wife there for our anniversary. We had a wonderful time. I made it a point to the waiter that I wanted to have relaxed service in a slow and easy fashion, and goodness did he get the message; it was great. I had a wonderful tilapia and my wife had shrimp scampi both were well prepared, presented well with an easy Continental/Mediterranean style. Honestly, I've been wanting to try this place for years. We finally were able to on our date night on a Friday evening. We got there at about 6:30 and the place was packed. Thankfully they had seating outside, and it was such a beautiful day that we didn't mind. The outdoor area was very pleasant and definitely did not look like we were in Waco. Our server Hannah was great and came to us immediately to get our drinks and appetizers ordered. We got the flaming cheese (can't remember its actual name) and it was okay. Maybe not worth $15. We could tell they were understaffed and also not super organized. We were asked if we had been waited on, like they didn't know who was assigned to what tables. The owner was running about super frantically and assigning people to tables randomly. I understand though, we are in some weird times right now. Anyway, I got the Greek salad for my entree and it was delicious. My other half got the 1424 Wellington and he loved it. The place has a great aura, though a bit pricey. Wow, if you are looking for a really nice meal with fantastic service this is the place. As a group we had the lamb chops, fettuccine and the sea bass. My wife said next time she will try the Salmon. When they brought the correct dish back out to my table (after everyone was done eating) it was obviously the same chicken and rice just with different sauces and toppings. Keep in mind our 3 person bill was $132.00 and our waitress was asking us not to hold it against her as she put the order in wrong..... There are two ways to evaluate this restaurant. If I compare it to every place I have eaten at in any city across the US, at most it gets three stars. If I limit the comparison to just restaurants in Waco, then it gets a four. Waco doesn't have too much in the area of upscale dining, so it was nice to see a place that had a bistro atmosphere and could be a place to go to for a special occasion or for a date. We tried this place out because a friend of mine saw an article for it in the local Waco magazine that was in his hotel room. I was pleased with the atmosphere and the service was good. First off I have to say the wine prices were relatively cheap. Keep in mind: 1) this place is in Waco and 2) I'm used to Dallas prices. We were provided a basket of bread to snack on before our meal arrived. This had a "store-bought" taste to it and wasn't served warm. I think this would have been better warmed up. The bread also lacked any real flavor. Meh. A Caesar salad came out first. I've had some really good Caesar salads in my day and this was just okay. Nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps some homemade croutons might have been a nice touch. For my entree I had the 1424 Wellington. I thought the meat was well prepared, but overall nothing that blew me away. It's a nice entree that one would be pleased with if they were to order it. What I do have to give them credit for is the bread pudding dessert. It was really good. The alcoholic drinks and entrées for two was $70. I went again this past weekend and I'm glad I gave it a second chance. The southern chipotle chicken was amazing and it was an excellent experience overall. Still a bit on the pricy side but not too expensive. I live near to 1424 but just visited for the first time this week. The menu is nice, and I was tempted by the 1424 wellington, but after seeing the picture and review, glad I went for seafood picatta. We started with the stuffed mushroom, which was quite good, a bit like a fancy pizza with a lot of cheese though. The house salad with blue cheese was good, the dressing was very smooth but rich in flavor and did not taste store bought. From there I had the seafood picatta which was alright but a few gripes: Temp was inconsistent among the pieces of seafood, the tilapa(arguably not seafood), was cool and the breading had gotten soggy siting on the lettuce and sauce. The scallop was disappointing as the outside was slightly overcooked and rubbery, and there was a bit of a gritty texture, it did not taste dirty, but had the texture of dirty. The shrimp were the saving part, as they were very good. The other diner had orange vermouth scallops and 2 of the 4 of them were also gritty. One thing I forgot to mention is that we both had different varieties of rice, and both we some of the best rice ever had at a restaurant. now you may think rice is something simple, but in the US and even in Europe, it is so routinely done wrong. 1424 excels at rice dishes! For dessert I we split a creme brulee (good but in my opinion too deep of a dish, leaving only a small area of caramelization possible), and white chocolate bread pudding, which was very good. I have had better bread pudding, but this was an excellent example. It was made from the same light but flavorless french bread they serve, an example of something good coming from something mediocre. I think the price is high($50/person for a full meal) for the quality received. I am not saying I will not go back, but I would prefer to meet the chef and impart a little more flavor and quality before spending big at such a place. read more

I wish I could give this a zero star rating--mainly for the way we were treated, because the food was average. It was the rude interaction and indignity we were subjected to at the restaurant by the chef/owner for which a zero rating is deserved. We have eaten here a few times in the past and had really good food and service--so a few weeks ago (September), we got a table for 3 for my boyfriend's mother's 80th birthday. The table service was adequate, but the food was less than average. I ordered the halibut which was dry and sightly overcooked (the flavor was okay) and my boyfriend ordered Chilean sea-bass. When the sea-bass came out, it was a tiny maybe one inch thick filet. We questioned our server whether is was even Chilean sea-bass, which she said it was. We order Chilean sea-bass from fine restaurants all the time for special meals (including at this very restaurant in the past), and we know what it looks like and what it tastes like. This was not it. Maybe another kind of sea-bass or another kind of fish altogether. It looked nothing close to the business owner submitted image that is even featured in the yelp listing for this restaurant. We were disappointed. At the end of the meal, we gave this feedback to our server. Our server relayed the feedback to the kitchen. The dinner ended in the chef/owner starting a heated argument with us at our table, showing us his cell phone image of a filleted sea-bass, giving us a convoluted explanation as to why the tiny filet entrée cost us 43.00 a plate. He asked what we would be willing to pay for this piece of sea-bass we were served and we answered what we were willing to pay, a third of the price. The chef yelled at us and said "YOU WILL PAY FULL PRICE!" before turning abruptly and retreating back into the kitchen. Wow. This is no way to run a business and we will never be back, and will tell our friends in Waco about this experience. read more

Unfortunately we waited about 20 mins before getting greated with waiters and waitresses passing by us. It didn't look busy since it was a Tuesday so maybe there was some miscommunication between the host & servers? When we finally got our waitress she was so sweet and helpful! Upon getting our food I was disappointed. My friends meal looked great but was small. I got the scampi and it was more of oily pasta with no flavor, lemon or salt. It had a ton of cheese on which doesn't seem typical for the scampi but it was okay. The shrimp were giant so that's a plus. This was my first time eating here. It was absolutely outstanding. Had the calamari for the appetizer. It may well have been the best I've ever eaten and was a nice size for 2 to share. For the entree, I tried the grilled cod. The cod was moist and tender despite being grilled, something not always achieved. It came with a salad and two vegetables. I chose the house salad and dressing and would definitely choose it again. The broccoli and sugar snap peas were also delicious. With every bite I kept thinking about how rare it is to find everything perfectly cooked but it was. The portions were generous. My dinner companion said theirs was perfect as well. For dessert, we split the French Silk Truffle Mousse Cake. I've never had anything like it and would definitely recommend it. It was so good. The service was as outstanding as the meal. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and attentive overdoing it. The atmosphere is comfortable. You're able to carry on a conversation with others in your group and understand them. It is a bit dim but not uncomfortably so. This may have been my first visit here but it won't be the last. My compliments to the chef and owners for a delightful meal. read more

Very pretty restaurant and the patio is great if it's nice weather. The cocktail menu was quite extensive and our drinks were well made, including a French 75 and a nicely executed Mojito. The restaurant does have a fairly high end house liquor standard. The complimentary bread was fresh and tasty, and the Caesar salad with house made dressing and crunchy breadcrumbs was really good. I personally hate trite gloppy Caesar salads but this one was perfect. I imagine having a large one with chicken for an entree would be quite good. While the dolmades were ok (good but not amazing), the fresh red snapper and fresh Texas brown shrimp sautéed in brandy and butter were flavorful and cooked perfectly. My wife had the grilled red snapper and I had the Chilean sea bass with the red pepper pesto. Both of the fish were cooked perfectly and were moist, tender and delicious. My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary because we wanted to treat ourselves and have a bottle of wine and good food. We walked into the restaurant as soon as they opened. We were greeted by who I assume was the owner, and we were told that we could sit anywhere. As soon as we were seated, the server introduced himself and told us about the specials of the day. We told him that it was anniversary and we just wanted to enjoy each other's company with a bottle of wine and an appetizer before ordering our main entree. He understood and brought our wine ($42) and cheese and fruits plate ($15). I asked about the kind of cheese served in the appetizer and he didn't know, and didn't try to find out for us. He came back a few times to check on us to see if we were ready to order our entree. After about 45 mins of sipping on wine and finishing the fruit and unknown cheese, we ordered the off the menu special, 8 oz. filet cooked medium rare, topped with a mushroom wine sauce which included two sides (lemon carrot rice and sugar snap peas) ($36) and the roasted lamb shank with two sides (Greek potatoes and sauté corn) ($18). The food came out in about 15 mins and looked delicious. Husband cut into the steak and it was closer to medium well. My lamb shank was a little dry, but it was very well seasoned. When the server came to check on us, I told him my husband's steak was over cooked, then the server told the owner, who immediately came over to the table to ask if they could remake him another plate. My husband kindly turned down the offer and the owner told us that dessert was on the house. (Very sweet) We ordered the white chocolate bread pudding. It was one of the best bread puddings I have ever had. Overall, the service was great, but the food was just ok. We probably will not come back to dine, but possibly order a dessert to go. :) read more
