    We did not escape!

Wow! This was an incredible game. The attention to detail is insane. This was my first time doing an escape room and my mind is blown. We chose The Collector's room and it was too scary for me it's theme is that you have been "collected" by Baton Rouge's loose serial killer. This may be something someone else would love, but I do not like being scared at all though. It distracted me from the game play and made me not want to look for clues in fear of something scary. I can't handle it I am a big baby lol! I still had a blast and would love to come back and try a different room. The puzzles were awesome and finding the clues was alot of fun. We had a hard time and the game master helped us out when we asked without that help we wouldn't have made it as far as we did. It is definitely worth every penny!

We had SOOO much fun here! We're playing all of the games they have available and all of them are great so far! Carreigh is a great game master, took awesome care of us, and was so much fun to talk to. Seriously an awesome person to meet and have as a host! We came all the way from Cali to just do these rooms so I highly highly recommend doing these!

Cutthroat Cavern - my wife's 200th room! Thank you, Taylor!

Like other enthusiasts before me, I was drawn to Louisiana by stories of the fabled 13th Gate, an icon in the escape room industry, a travel destination in itself, where pirates lurked and tombs waited to be explored. From New Orleans, we made the most of our excursion to Baton Rouge and played all 7 rooms at 13th Gate in one day. So that you don't feel like you are reading a book here, I'll summarize each room with my rating from worst to first. 1) Death Row - Good production, difficult/uncomfortable reaching for key, interesting ending, fun overall but some leaps of logic required. (3.5/5) - #153 out of 223 rooms I've done to date 2) Spellbound - Excellent production, good puzzles, some frustrations with GM and vague hints or no hints at all. Needed to sprint to the end to escape. (4/5) - #63 3) The Collector - Solid production, creepy, good puzzle flow, interesting mechanics, a little dated (4/5) - #53 4) Agent 13 - Very good production in room 3, fun puzzles, exciting ending but very difficult for 2 (4.5/5) - #27 5) Tomb of Anubis - Stunning production, fun puzzles, frustrating hints at the end, one puzzle required wrong solution, some tech issues, should be a 90-minute room. Nearly impossible in 60 minutes. Still worth it (4.5/5). - #21 6) Cutthroat Cavern - Amazing production but not as good as some have described. Engaging puzzles, unique never-before-seen elements, some tech issues in room 1. Still a must-do room. (5/5) - #12 7) The Asylum - Movie set production, unbelievable immersion. Excellent puzzles. Creepy as hell. Fun ending. Overall, incredible! 100% a must do room (5/5) - #5 out of 223 rooms. So there you have it. My experience at 13th Gate in just under 200 words. The owner, Taylor, was awesome and went above and beyond to roll out the red carpet for us. He made the sign to help us celebrate my wife's 200th room! It wasn't perfect but overall, it was an unforgettable experience and if you are an enthusiast like me, this is a trip definitely worth taking.

Spellbound I should start by saying that my wife and I do escape rooms all the time with just the two of us. And we have never not escaped when we are alone. Because we see every puzzle and clue and aren't missing information because others are handling it. We called months ahead of our trip to see if we could book a private room. We offered to pay extra--whatever it took. They were friendly enough, but they would not let us. We had to play with others. Well, we didn't want to miss out on these rooms, so we moved forward and hoped for the best. For Spellbound, we got out with a group of four 12-year old girls there for a birthday party. Hey, I have kids. Kids are great. If you aren't racing against the clock trying to solve puzzles. The girls were looking for a different experience than we were. And they were young girls. Which meant lots of giggling and shrieking. And I can only imagine that the birthday girl and her friends weren't exactly thrilled to learn that some strange couple would be crashing their party. After playing the room, I get why we couldn't have done it with just two. Because there was one puzzle that physically required more than two people. Puzzle wise, though, we could have killed it in that room. So 13th Gate, figure out how to lower that minimum body count. If your concern is money, charge more for a private room. And while you're working on that, don't stick two adults in a kid's birthday group. Neither side wants that. So I have to admit that the corporate policy of matching escape room enthusiasts to overly enthusiastic pre-teens colored my view of the room. But with that now out of the way, here's what I thought of the room: It was awesome. The production value was unparalleled. The puzzles were mostly intuitive, though the equipment they provide you could have worked better. The ambience was almost perfect--the sights, the smells, the sounds (though I would have appreciated a bit more light). I am not a fan of the clue-giving system, though. It's animatronic and pre-programmed, so the game master ended up having to chime in to expound on the clue either because it was too hard to understand, gave us information we already had, or made no sense. There was great flow, good surprises, and there was a lot to do. Overall, it was a good time. I think the biggest thing that would have made it better is if I was actually invited to that girl's thirteenth birthday party. Then again, if it was just my wife and me, it would have been beyond awesome. (I do appreciate that the gamemaster gave us a couple extra minutes because we were so close to escaping when time ran out.) Cutthroat Cavern For this we got paired with a family of six--dad, mom, three kids, and an exchange student from España. They were inexperienced at escape rooms, which meant we spent too much time trying to orient them to what the puzzles were like, but they were much better than giggly pubescent girls. Cutthroat Cavern was very much a Goonies-themed room. And it's production value exceeded even Spellbound. The scope was amazing. Sean Aston and Cory Feldman didn't have this much fun filming Goonies. There were some truly amazing moments. Lots of them. And I am sure we lost time as we just gazed at our surroundings in awe. Clues were given through a talking parrot that was not only hard to understand, but gave very unhelpful clues. So again, not my favorite part. Also, they tell you at the beginning that you only use the objects once. It's a one-and-done room. But that was not true of one object. So we did need a clue to discover that we needed to go back and check the thing we had already used once. Tomb of Anubis This was more of an Indiana Jones themed room (in fact, several chords from the theme played at the end). If you've done Red Giant in LA, the theme was very similar, though Anubis edges out Red Giant for mind-blow factor. This room, like the other two, had very high production value. Like a movie set or ride at Disneyland. But instead of watching from a ride car, you're interacting directly with everything. Really cool room with some very cool effects. This room, too, had something you had to reuse more than once, but at least it told you as part of the game. Overall The rooms really are as great as everyone says they are. Easy five stars. I have to bump my rating down to four, though, based on some of the policies that resulted in a bit of a tarnish on my experience.

Another goal crossed off from my bucket list.

Omg. This place is amazing. After I have heard so many escape room enthusiasts praised this place. Finally I traveled from California with my team of 6 to play all their games. I personally have done 168 escape rooms, and I am the second least experienced player in my team. Their rooms have so much to do. My mind was blown away. Most immersive set design, great puzzles, and nice stories. The best about my experience was our game master, Carreigh. We LOVE her energy, her enthusiasm, and her attentiveness. She made sure to help us when we needed a clue and explained things we need to be aware of throughly. She made our experience much much more enjoyable. She needs a raise and a promotion. Highly recommended 13th gate to all the escape room enthusiast.

There is a reason this is called one of the best escape rooms in the country. I believe it's ruined me for every other escape room the way Disney World ruins you for county fairs. We have done almost every room (at the time of this review a new room has opened we haven't made it to yet, but will soon). The first visit was my suggestion to my husband for a team building activity at work. They enjoyed it so much they have gone again to another room. It's also an awesome group date activity (we have done it this way several times). Upon exiting they take your group photo and post to Facebook every few days. No pictures of the inside (phones not allowed for obvious reasons). Every visit the employees have been fantastic and have a great sense of humor. The details are INSANE and once you've been it's easy to understand why it takes so long to finish a new room. These rooms are NOT EASY but fun even if you don't escape! Looking forward to trying out the new room sometime soon.

Super cute, a bit cheesy. But overall a good time. We did the temple room, and that room was DARK.

The best experience I've ever had for breakout rooms. I've done The Asylum and Cutthroat Cavern. Both were very exciting and difficult.

First timers at an escape room but would try this again, given the opportunity. Great staff and well-spaced appointments during COVID.

They work year round on their detailed and amazing set designs (i actually spent more time looking at those than even trying to enjoy the spooks and scares). The actors are pretty good. We missed some of the features due to how our group got mixed with a slower moving couple who awkwardly held up things and kept pulling off to the side. I like that they have some actor engagement in the line... i feel like there could be more bc you really are just standing there. They added more bathrooms for the line, so that was nice. I appreciate the security in and around the house. This particular year (and perhaps previous years as I haven't been in a few), the whole thing ended pretty suddenly and lacklusterly when you just walk out into a store selling shirts.... no ending fright, nothing to really make it end memorably. We enjoyed the various places to take pictures across the street, and they always have some talented bands playing. I love that the actors enjoy the experience every year, and it's even better that this little gem is available right here in Baton Rouge!
