Oh, 127 Days, the things I could say about you.
You came to me, an unknown burger place, long after I had fallen in love with others. You tried to steal me away from them with your perfectly made buns, your fantastic medium rare meat patties, your wonderfully done chicken and your utterly delicious sauces... Your wily ways definitely succeeded you saucy minx of greasy deliciousness.
Over the two months since I've discovered you I've had nothing but positive experiences, with a vegetarian burger that marries its ingredients together perfectly with one another, but are still complimented with the addition of bacon. A perfect bacon cheeseburger that delicately provides a wonderful balance of flavours with a tangy sauce.
But the Godzilla burger. I knew when I read you that I would probably be enamoured with you for some time, but even I wasn't prepared for the loving embrace of chicken masterfully crumbed and seasoned, with a signature beef pattie that is utterly and completely divine. You provide me with a spice hit just on the border between pleasure and pain, coming from someone who only enjoys medium spice. I love you... Enough to have ordered you now three times in a single month.
Add to this the speakeasies. Knowing I can turn up on any day and ask for a burger without knowing what I will receive in return? Genius. I could look at your daily photos on networks to find out, but why ruin the surprise? Surprise was what I got when I ordered one such burger only to find it had delicious pork belly waiting for me. So far, no speakeasy has disappointed, even though I know a day will invariably come when it will.
To say that 127 Days is the perfect burger place would be wrong. While it is definitely my favourite, outweighing technically excellent places like Burgerstronomy and Bread and Bone, it isn't perfect. Some menu items can be a little bland and flat. Squealed with a Kiss is a perfect example of this, where the Pulled Pork is an 'okay' at best.
Similarly another menu staple, the Croydon Cheesesteak, is essentially a BBQ Chicken pizza (with beef instead of chicken) in a bun, and is quite the let down, especially if you are familiar with the significantly more well known and balanced Philadelphia Cheesesteak.
The sides are flavourful, and nothing to complain about, but they don't hold a candle to the burgers, the same could be said for their shakes, which outside of their custom creations of the day, can be quite generic and typical "burger bar" fare.
But the truth is I've eaten at 127 Days more in two months than I've eaten at any other burger place in two years, and I still crave it, even today when you aren't even open.
If that's not a sign of good things, then I don't know what is. read more
