The work was shoddy and even worse, despite promises, they put a lien on our house over a small amount that our insurance company had outstanding. This was due to an administrative error but after recommending them they nailed us to the wall with a lien over a very small debt that was not ours to pay. So forget any loyalty between customer and business. Their workers didn't speak English and looked like they were being paid substandard wages. The lien was the final straw with R4. Stay away.

There was a vague allusion to some storm damage from last year's hurricane that never made it here (even though they hadn't inspected anything.) I never got a quote and told them I wasn't interested, then received excuses instead of what I needed and warnings about how hard it is to call my insurance company and file a claim. Without knowing anything about the job a number of $14,000 or so was tossed out after informing them we were not interested. Another company (Mancilla Roofing) did a thorough inspection, climbed up on the roof and listed things they needed to do specifically, gave us materials samples to mull over, and quoted $9,000 for the entire job to include replacing all the roof vents and features, and even running a magnet over the property to find any nails that may have escaped their work area. These guys seem to be locking themselves into potential customers through the insurance company immediately to pretty much name their price and prevent anyone else from competing with them. I didn't get the feeling that any of this was on the level, but I am guessing that if they can overcharge insurance companies enough this way their actual roofing work should be done pretty well and they wouldn't have to cut corners. The other reviewers here who don't seem to understand how their insurance works all gave them 5 stars after all.

Let me preface that before I came into the picture, my mother in law was quite upset at the Schantz…read morecompany. Apparently she had already left a couple of not so nice messages that the work they had done had made things worse, ie: more leaks in the roof. What I eventually figured out was she had gotten things mixed up with another roofer, who did the original work on the roof. So I come in, and had an independent handyman I trust, go up and walk the roof with me. We figured out all the issues, and I called up Greg Schantz. Not only did he stop by on a Sunday to personally address the issues, he was quite polite, despite the mixup and messages from my mother in law. I personally apologized to him for my mother in law and asked if he'd walk the roof with me. He did, and spotted all the same things the other handyman and I had found, plus other issues we hadn't seen. He agreed to make repairs not only around the small area they had worked on, but also addressed all the minor issues/problems done by the original roofer free of charge. On top of that his crew spotted two areas without supports where the roof had begun to make small divots, which would later cause more leaking. All free of charge and done quickly, and professionally. So now a couple more months have passed and we're still getting minor leaks in the same area Schantz had worked on. They came back out and completely ripped out all the previous roofers work around the chimney and dug around and found a hole, no one could have found, as it was buried under layers of roofing around the chimney. This they also fixed, with a minor, and completely understandable charge, as it was outside the scope of the original work. So all in all, great experience, and I had fun just talking with him and assessing the roof. Edit: Yes this is my mother in law in Atlanta. I noted my profile still says I live in CA.
