A couple of months later I was advised of a new program, Americana Getaway, at a support group meeting. On my first visit there I was impressed with the size and openness of the facility, the professionalism of staff, the quality of food being served, and the variety of activities offered. The flexibility in days and hours we in which we could participate was also a big plus. While I was optimistic, I wasn't sure my wife would take to it. After 7 months of our involvement at Americana, all of my initial impressions have been surpassed by an exceptionally caring, attentive, and professional team and the extent to which they make us both feel "at home". My wife has not generally been a "joiner" or active participant in group activities but she is a participant at Americana and, most important, is comfortable being there where she is so warmly received and treated. This pleases me to no end and at the same time frees me to attend to other matters knowing she is well cared for, personally and professionally. An added benefit to this program is the manner and extent to which Americana reaches out to family and community members by way of periodic luncheons, events, and activities they initiate that promote a sense of collegiality and support. In this regard, they recently hosted a live and very engaging "Elvis Presley Show" followed by photos with Elvis and a tasty luncheon prepared by their chef. It was a joyous and memorable event for the entire audience and just left everyone feeling pretty good. Just outstanding! Communication is one of the most important parts of providing care, and this agency has repeatedly failed in that area. I was left waiting without any communication or explanation. * I contacted the agency and left a message for Val to call me who I was told was a supervisor, asking to return my call to discuss what happened. Unfortunately I never received a response. What makes this even more concerning is that they serve elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and families who are already under tremendous stress and relying on these services for support. They present themselves as compassionate and caring, but that has not been my experience. If you are seeking respite services through this agency, be prepared for poor communication, more stress, more disappointment and difficulty getting the assistance you need.

He actually picked up the phone. He talked with me for about 40 minutes, explaining all the services he offers and how it would look helping my dad (and mom). He knows his stuff! Very compassionate. Knowledgeable. Caring. There are a lot of things to consider when hiring a caregiver. Legalities. Regulations. Matching a caregiver with a client. So much more. Dwight explained it all so clearly. Big one: If you have a long-term healthcare insurance policy, make sure to check the waiting period. My mom hadn't looked at the policy in years, and sure enough there was a waiting period. His advice on activating it was on point. He met with my mom and I within a week of first talking on the phone. He re-explained to my mom all the services he offers. She was able to use him for only a week....my dad returned to the hospital. And never returned home. Dwight was so supportive. Would not hesitate to call Dwight.
