For starters, the T-shirts are actually cool enough to be wearable post-event. More porta-potties means no expending all your pre-race energy on a pee-pee dance! They were kind of in a maze though, like an extra obstacle, just not on the race track, or was that the beer kicking in?. Bigger obstacles means more bad-assery!! They were taller and more challenging than the past by far. Giant slip & slide, ftw! More water stops means all those pre-race beers won't be so heavy in your stomach! Muddier mud & deeper water will make you wish you had brought a towel, but dancing with your post-race beer will warm you up! If you haven't done warrior dash in previous years I highly recommend grabbing a group of friends and signing up for next year. Costumes are pretty much mandatory. The post-race party has a costume contest and lots of opportunities for hilarious pictures! If the past years are any indication, this event can only get more bad-ass!

This place is so awesome I want to write an expletive filled review telling everyone how f*cking…read moreRAD this group is. Instead, I will fill you in: Who: Me, total newbie to the track, relative newbie to riding with 6000 miles and ten months of (primarily) commuting experience under my belt. What: Beginner track day with TrackTactics. When: October 17, 2011 Where: Buttonwillow Why: To learn to be a better rider. The why matters the most of all. How: Read below My beginner's track day included instruction time in the classroom to talk about lines, turning technique and what goes into turning well. We also discussed track etiquette and safety. In fact, we talked about safety a LOT which is as it should be. Safety is very important to this outfit. After our initial 20 minute lecture in the morning we were led around the track along with C group. (Track days are broken into A, B, and C groups for those who don't know). The beginners wore mesh vests over their leathers so we were easy for instructors and C group riders to spot. Being led around the track was awesome. I don't know if this is standard but it's a great idea because it let's us ride around the track at a sane pace for the first go round. Truth be told, I was the slowest person on the track during this session. I was stiff and no having much fun. After round one an instructor, Will, came up to me and said I seemed stiff. I told him I am a slow rider and he said, "No, you are cautious. Next session I'm going to work with you." Come session two Will and I took off last in the group and he told me to follow his lines and relax a bit. I went faster this go round. Will was checking me out in his mirror as I rode to see what I was doing. We exited the track after two laps and talked body position. The remainder of the session was AMAZING. Will's tips about positioning made sense as soon as I started using them. My speed increased a lot and I felt much smoother. I passed another rider. I can't explain how good that felt. Our next session Will led me then followed me around for a bit. Afterward he gave me feedback. The rest of the day I was riding around on my own. Honestly the first session after lunch I felt a little intimidated without Will but I soon regrouped. Will's tips stuck with me and some other fortunate student benefited from his excellent advice and instruction. What made Will a great instructor was his patience because there's nothing worse than trying to learn new tasks and feeling like your teacher finds you stupid or slow. It adds unnecessary stress, the last thing you want when hurtling yourself around a racetrack pushing yourself to the edge. Every piece of information he shared was useful and applicable to what I was doing. He had an excellent way of breaking down the series of motions to position my body properly depending on the type of turn. I really cannot say enough about what a great instructor he was. I left my track day a 100% better rider. I learned more about turning in one day than I had since I started riding. To a non motorcycle rider this review may not make much sense. To someone who does ride, I hope you understand how meaningful this day was, how very beneficial to my riding. I am now more planted through my turns on the street and this makes me safer. If you have NOT done a track day I highly suggest you check out TrackTactics. The price is fantastic, they rent leathers so that takes away one big excuse and did I mention how fun it was? I spent the 3.5 hour drive home chattering happily about EVERY detail of my day. I'm still smiling just thinking of how much fun I had. I honestly cannot wait until my next track day. If you're track curious, check them out. You will not regret it. Cootz OUT!

Fallbrook's "First Annual" fell a bit short…read more.. I realize this was the first Half Marathon and 5K for Fallbrook's Avocado Festival; and, as such, inaugural events are usually then prone to glitches, misfirings, snags, and snafu's. I get that. I do. Neverthesless, out of all the runs I've registered for over the past three months, I was most looking forward to Fallbrook's. I mean, c'mon, avocados will make everything better, won't they? After all, Fallbrook is the unofficial "Avocado Capital of the World!" So running amidst groves upon groves of avocado trees; being included in their Annual Avocado Festival; and, upon finishing, expecting a blissfully fruitful avocado saturation (the run promoted "plenty" of avocados for everyone) was what I had in mind. However, we didn't run among farms of avocado trees (we 5Kers ran down one road and back up again,) we didn't arrive during the famed festival (it was the following day,) and there weren't "plenty" of avocados awaiting us (there were about four, small buckets full.) I noted, in fact, that the Half Marathoners didn't even receive avocados. I do feel bad, but there didn't seem to me to be any 5K runners with armfuls of them. We just picked up one or two. No one policed those efforts, and I'm sure that no one understood that so few avocados were being made available. The word "plenty," it's relative, I guess. I mean, there could just as easily have been four buckets of bananas, and we could have run the "Banana Half Marathon & 5K" instead, right? The "Avocado Capital" ran out, did they? Uh-huh. Having run the 5K, and because we were redirected to park at a church three miles away from the event--then to be shuttled in--I wish I had opted to purchase a parking pass for the Live Oak Park lot nestled directly next to packet pick-up and registration. I assume there was an email inviting runners to do just that, but I parked at the church anyway. The problem was that after running the 5K, we weren't shuttled back to our cars until over two hours later! No one--not any of the volunteers--seemed to have answers to this. But we--with many frustrated others--waited...and waited...and waited... (By the way, our bus--when it finally did arrive--broke down en route to the 5K church parking. Add another 20 minutes.) And the medals... Wrong date, on those that had a date; others were dateless. And the ribbons: some were simply green (like mine) and some were more colorful, promoting the race itself. I don't know... This run, it just didn't live up to what I was hoping for. So Fallbrook, I'm sorry for the 2-stars. But that's what updates are for. And if you didn't receive criticism such as these, you wouldn't have the need to improve. And improving is what I expect will be on the table for next year. I congratulate your hosting this what-could-have-been-so-much-better run. This is constructive, by the way. Mistakes allow for growth. So...keep growing. Having an uphill run, 30:36:3. (Seems wrong though. Maybe it was gun time.) O.o
