The Cross Harbour Tunnel is what I call a necessary evil. When I'm over at HK side, I usually take any buses that crosses it and then change to train at the Hung Hom station in order to get home - so that's what I mean by necessary. The 'evil' makes itself a little too clear during rush hours. There is traffic before the tunnel, in it, and after it. Just thinking about it is unsettling.
It's the worst at around 5pm or 6pm. The entrance of the tunnel can be so jammed, you can take a fifteen-minute nap, wake up, and still not be in the tunnel yet. And once you do get into it, the bus or car or whatever you're on moves at such a painfully slow speed, you can probably walk through the tunnel at a faster pace. You can take another fifteen-minute nap from here - if you're getting off at the tollbooths stop, you'll wake up just in time to alight.
If you're travelling at a strange time, like at 2pm in the afternoon or 11pm at night, the tunnel is a breeze to go through - you can be in and out of there in three minutes, and there's no jam after.
One thing I like about the tunnel is its proximity to the Hung Hom station - all you have to do is walk up the bridge and cross it, and you'll be at the station already.
If you having some place to be at and have to take the tunnel at rush hour, plan ahead. Sorry - plan way, WAY ahead - if you want to make it in time! read more
