Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Note that they don't accept foreign credit cards, so be prepared with cash, Octopus, or Alipay.

As someone who speaks no Chinese, I was able to rely on the fact that no other restaurants on the floor were open. I cannot believe how luscious the French toast was. How has no one popularized in the US condensed milk instead of syrup?? The bottled chilled milk tea was sensational too. Strong flavor, cut by creamy milk. Outstanding. Make this a stop on your Hong Kong journey.

Quite unassuming of a business, but they don't need to be when the food is good. I came here during the COVID pandemic when social distancing only allowed two people at a table. There were three of us however, as I visited this place with two new friends, but we somehow made our seating arrangement work. We were seated on plastic stools around simple round tables that seemed to belong to the market and could probably use some wiping. We split a few items between the three of us, and everything was super tasty and traditional Hong Kong. Milk tea in a bottle, French toast, and an egg and beef sandwich. One of my friends is a local, so he was able to order in Cantonese for us. He also happened to have recommended this place to us. Shout out to him for being such a good foodie friend.

When I entered, a staff asked me how many and then showed me to a table. There's a QR code to order, or you can request a physical menu. Must have: tea and coffee latte that I could only get in Hong Kong, Tsui Wah's signature fish balls rice noodle soup (i debated), and I ordered a side of scrambled eggs. The beverage came out first, then the eggs, and finally the noodle. If you haven't visited Hong Kong, the table is equipped with a drawers for the utensil and napkins. I totally forgot and when I asked for more napkins a friendly wait staff showed me the drawers. :) My neighboring tables had a different order, and their foods also looked good. While it is a chain restaurant, it serves up some great foods.

Here are some of the items we ate here: Steamed Rice with BBQ Pork and Scrambled Eggs (神之叉燒飯) - 4/5. I love both char siu and Hong Kong-style scrambled eggs, so this dish is a no-brainer for me. Overall, it's good (enough); everything came together. However, there's room for improvement. The char siu has too much fat and needs a bit more searing. The scrambled egg could have been more velvety and less greasy. Hainanese Chicken Rice (大勝三方海南雞) - 3/5. I love that they serve a good soup with more ingredients than just chicken stock. I also like their ginger sauce, which isn't just grated ginger with oil but a puree mixture with additional ingredients. The texture of the chicken is good, but the meat tasted quite tasteless. The rice is okay. Crispy Noodle with Sweet and Sour Prawns on Sizzling Plate (哈哈笑雙面黃)--2/5. Disappointing. The noodle on my dish looked thinner than the one shown on the menu photo. The sauce is too thickened and more like gravy than sauce; it is one-dimensional with a simple taste profile that is just too sweet. Then there was too much sauce over the thin noodles, which ultimately caused the noodles to clump up. Char Siu Bao (叉燒包) - 3/5. Average Char Siu Bao. This is the baked version. I like the outer layer of the dough, which I believe has a nice coating of egg wash that gives the bao a slightly sweeter, crusty texture. However, the overall dough isn't as fluffy as I would like. The Char Siu filling is a bit sweeter. I would like to taste a good half-half of sweetness and savoriness.

This location has a little bakery on the outside that sells egg tarts and typical bakery food. On weekend mornings, you'll see a long line at the bakery section because the pastries taste great and are really affordable - hk$7 for a pineapple bun and hk$10 for a pineapple bun with a slab of butter, which is a hk staple. They also sell Mexican custard buns, which I realized are really popular at these chain hk cafes, but I've never tried them. I did try the egg tarts here for just hk$6. They're so good! Flaky just the way I like it, but not as sweet as nyc egg tarts. Mind you, these bakery items are available not only as to go orders but to stay orders. They make great breakfast food or even an afternoon snack. The first time I ate here was for breakfast and I ordered one of those set meals. I got the beef with pasta in tomato soup. The set included a hot drink and two buns with egg and ham. The meal wasn't that memorable but I came back for dinner cause the food pics looked so good. I love hk baked minced beef over rice/spaghetti, and the ones here are unbelievably good. I love how perfect the egg they add on top looks and it's runny! I'm not a big eater but I'm usually able to finish the whole dish because that's just how tasty it is. I've also had their soup noodles here before and the portion is huge. Honestly, you won't regret coming here. There's a wide range of items on the menu to suit everyone's tastes and budget.
