On this particular occasion I went with the Matcha Red Bean Layer Cake and Soy Milk Matcha. There's a deal when you order a large drink plus a cake that the layer cake drops from $29 to $18. I like that I was able to pay with my Octopus (transportation card, like the Presto in the GTA) so that I didn't have to look for the correct amount of change. The layer cake tasted of match but it was a very subtle flavour. The red beans were a nice addition. The soy milk matcha had a heavier flavour of matcha and was quite smooth. When I sat down I noticed that there's wireless chargers on the tops of the high top tables as well as USB ports on the side. I wasn't able to connect to WiFi this time but I appreciate being able to charge my phone after taking lots of photos during the day.

Yoshinoya is set up much like the other Asian fast-food dining restaurants. There's a menu of all the food items that they're serving on that particular day. If the item is removed or a sticker is placed over it, they're sold out and you can no longer order that item. If you want to get their hot pot, you have to come relatively early or else they sell out. This Yoshinoya is located on the second floor on Nathan Road. It's fairly big with two big dining areas. After you order, you take your receipt to the "kitchen" area where the workers will start assembling your order. Then you pretty much seat yourself wherever you want. If you order hot pot, you're going to have to ask one of the cleaning staff workers to get you the base of the hot pot and help you light the fire. My sister absolutely loves the individual hot pots that you can find in HK. There's more than enough for her to eat, and she can put whatever she wants into the bowl whenever she wants. Even though the hot pot meat set was pricier than at most other places, the quality definitely reflected in the price. I think they used Angus beef, and it was really, really good. There was a ton of vegetables and other ingredients. The broth had a good flavor - and you're able to refill the pot yourself if you ever run low. We sat next to a table of girls who were eating their hot pots for more than an hour. I was intrigued by their curry pork cutlet with egg and rice. This dish came with either a curry or a spaghetti sauce, but the curry sounded much more appropriate with the other ingredients on the dish. Everything was really good - only complaint was that they gave me way too much rice, so I was left with a good chunk and not enough curry. The pork cutlets were small, but tasty - but then again, anything fried is bound to be good. The egg was a good choice! That runny egg definitely tied the rest of the dish together. The regular beef bowl - pretty much your standard beef bowl that you'd get in the US. Nothing special. Beef tasted good, but there wasn't that excess of sauce that would soak into the rice, making the rice flavorful. It was just plain white rice. Meh, nothing special and I probably wouldn't recommend ordering this, especially if you've had it in the US. Pork belly with rice - this was a few dollars more than the beef bowl. The name definitely sounds enticing: pork belly! And the meat was a bit sweeter and juicier than the beef. But honestly, the beef bowl was just as tasty. Although it's only a few more dollars, I probably wouldn't order this again. tl;dr - Stick with the more unique offerings that HK Yoshinoyas have! Prices are a tad more expensive than regular places. And looking around, there were lots of people who seemed to be on dates? I guess it's a good date place? Highly recommend their hot pot!

This particular Fairwood is located in Dragon Centre in Sham Shui Po on the third floor. There's a ton of food options in the center itself - food court, plethora of restaurants, McDonald's, food carts - but you know you can always find a good deal at Fairwood. Usually people crowd around the doorway, waiting until 2 PM hits before they rush in for the deals. I suppose because of the location, there's a ton of choices that people can choose from. Again, the menu is posted right by the entryway of the restaurant. I feel like the menu helps prevent stupid questions from being asked to the waitress who takes your order. When something is sold out, it's removed. Menu changes four times a day (I think) - breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner. Despite this being a pretty busy plaza, the dining area itself is quite large. There are plenty of tables; people rush in, eat their meal, and leave so there are usually a lot of empty tables. I came during the afternoon tea for a quick bite to eat. There are a ton of elderly people who dine here at this time. The workers are really nice and seem to recognize familiar faces. They help carry trays and bring the seniors their food if they are unable to pick it up themselves. Afternoon tea is pretty standard and usually consists of similar items across all the chain restaurants. Imitation shark fin soup with combo of a chicken wing and 3 egg rolls. This soup was probably the saltiest out of all the ones I've tried. Despite adding vinegar to try to get that acidic taste that I like, the soup base was too salty that it overrode the vinegar. There was a good amount of ingredients in the soup itself, but I wasn't a big fan. The chicken wing was probably the best part! Very similar to a soy sauce chicken wing, and since it was grilled, the skin was slightly crispy. Not too much meat, but enough to hold your hunger over until dinnertime. The egg rolls were pretty pathetic. Limp and tasteless. We also ordered another imitation shark fin soup combo, but this one with sticky rice and HK styled milk tea. Soup was the same as the other one - too salty. The sticky rice was really good. The Chinese sausage and the oily rice, of course this would be tasty! And HK styled milk tea was on point for a fast food place. Smooth, but not too sweet. tl;dr - Food will always be a hit or miss, but prices are always pretty decent. Come for the afternoon teatime special at 2 PM!
