This is basically one of the popular Chinese fast food styled restaurants in Hong Kong. This particular Café de Coral is located on Nathan Road, but you'll have to walk down the stairs to get to where all the restaurants are. I believe it shares a dining area with a Vietnamese restaurant and Spaghetti House.
Café de Coral always has pretty good deals. If you order a dinner set, you can add a few more HK dollars to get a drink or a soup. There's hot pot offered during dinner time. They serve breakfast. But they're probably most popular for their afternoon teatime where smaller and cheaper portions are offered.
The ordering style is identical to Yoshinoya's. The menu is plastered on the side under different glass slots. If an item is sold out, it's removed. Order what you want and take the receipt to the kitchen area where the workers will set up the trays and food for you. If you order hot pot, you'll have to flag down a cleaning staff person to get you the tray and light the fire.
The food for Café de Coral is standard and comparable to all other Café de Corals, so it's hard to really judge them. If you find something offered here, they'll probably have it at another location unless it is all sold out. With all the people in HK, there's a Chinese fast food restaurant on almost every few blocks. Food is a hit or miss. Some days you'll find something so good, but they'll never offer it again. Other days the food will suck.
Hot Pot: This is pretty consistent. Out of all the hot pots we've tried in HK, Café de Coral's had the biggest portions for the cheapest price. My sister added on extra meat and it still was about the same (if not, less) price as Yoshinoya's. They gave a lot of ingredients - lettuce, vegetables, seafood, fish balls, etc. My dad ordered the wrong combo set and got seafood instead of beef. We ended up with some shrimp and fish, which were okay but not too fresh. And since we ended up paying more for extra meat, we ended up just overpaying for hot pot. Broth was good, but the one at Yoshinoya's was a bit sweeter.
Minced Pork with Imitation Shark Fin Soup: Well, the soup was good. If you add vinegar, it'll taste a bit like hot and sour soup. A good amount of ingredients and it wasn't too salty. The minced pork rice was horrible. Way too salty and even eating it with a glob of rice wasn't enough to get rid of that salty taste. Ugh, this was pretty bad. We ordered a side of vegetables which was an extra $7 HKD with a drink. Can't go wrong with just plain vegetables.
This place gets incredibly packed during lunch and dinner hours. It's super hard to find a seat if you come when it's busy, so either come with a friend who can guard a table, or pick a time when it's not too busy.
tl;dr - Get the hot pot! And come for afternoon tea-time (after 2 PM) as your lunch meal instead of eating at the lunch price. read more
