Living in Asia it's difficult to not try the cuisines of your continent so I've tried Korean here and there but have never been totally impressed. One day in Discovery Bay while I'm trying to ignore the barks and cries I walk towards Ebenezer's. I can't remember why but at the time it was closed, probably renovations or something. I remember being upset because I was looking forward to a kebab, spicy. Next door First Korean had recently opened and was offering a very affordable lunch set and knowing that anywhere else on Disco-Bay I had to shell out over $100 for lunch. I ignored the voice in the back of my head warning me against trying Korean again. I can't tell you how many times I've been back for the same $65 Stone Pot Rice dish, enough for the waiters to know my order before I sit down. When I'm not sure what to eat - Stone Pot Rice, too lazy to cook - Stone Pot Rice, Hmmm should I try something else? No - Stone Pot Rice. That's a lie. I've tried a couple other dishes and they weren't bad; Sweet and sour chicken with rice, and sizzling beef and enoki mushrooms with rice. The chicken dish would be great save for the bones in each and every little morsel making it more of a mission than an enjoying experience. The sizzling beef is good, no complaints on this dish. But when compared to the Stone Pot Rice, it's crispy rice and tradition Korean sauce there's simply no question. Even listening to the same ten songs on repeat for the past three months hasn't stopped me from returning - in fact I think it's helping me learn to speak Korean.

(#1) The Moyo brand has since grown into a number of other projects that have spanned across the city but it all started right here in Central. Like any of restaurant in the neighborhood, seating is tight. The government restrictions over the last couple of years have made it even tighter, resulting in discounted delivery through various local platforms. Indoor dining is back again, but one never truly knows when a future shutdown is happening. The food has remained high end, seasonal, and completely different from the usual dining options in HK. Whether it's been seasonal truffle tofu-toasts, carbonara infused tteokboki, or their winter friendly Korean style sashimi (bang-eo hwae), it's all very good. A personal favorite is their uni rice, which is quite modest in portion size (#2) but straight bangin' in flavor and texture. And unlike many other Korean restaurants, they have a nice Italian selection of wine that pairs quite well with the dishes. While it's been marketed as a fusion establishment, they also do a very good job in representing traditional options as well. Their bossam ssam plate with samgyupsal (pork belly) is tasty and while not always available, jajangmyun is a nice comfort food option. While I no longer live in Hong Kong to enjoy them, I still applaud their efforts from afar. While the food landscape / foreign community is rapidly changing as we speak, I hope they can continue to remain relevant during uncertain times. ______________ (#1) Italian, Korean. Moyo is right across the street from PMQ so if you see PMQ and see a tiny restaurant across the street that is Moyo. We ordered: Marinated Tofu Salad (Lotus root, purple sweet potato, apple): Lotus root was deep fried which provided a crispy contrast in texture to the soft tofu, apple and purple sweet potato gave it a hint of sweetness Drunken Clams (Rice wine Makgeolli, garlic, lemon zest, chili): Clams were cooked perfectly and we were so happy we got this. Kimchi pork pancake (minus the pork): I'm ALWAYS a fan of kimchi pancake. Even though the pancake could stand to be a teeny bit more crispy at the ends, I loved the kimchi flavor. Brussels Sprouts (Korean dwaenjang paste, almonds, peanut butter): This was stir fried and not roasted as I originally thought it would be. I'm not really a fan of stir fried brussels sprouts but it was interesting with the peanut butter taste which I could barely detect because the dwaenjang paste was stronger. The dishes here were more tapas size and I'm glad we ordered that many dishes. Service was on point and friendly. Moyo is a small and cozy restaurant (you're almost elbow to elbow) with a typical tiny bathroom. A definite place I'll need to try again for the kimchi disco fries and Korean Fried Chicken (sorry Alex, I'll not bring you next time, maybe someone else who is a carnivore).

Overpriced because of its foreignness and because it's in a bottle. Caesar Salad: This is not a Caesar salad. Caesar sauce (in a cup on the side, no less) with some veggies, croutons, and parmesan does not a Caesar make. Who adds frisee to a Caesar? Or red cabbage? OR TOMATOES AND CUCUMBERS? It's fine for a salad. Just know that you are not ordering a Caesar when you order this Caesar. Rice Crunch Chicken Boneless: Yes, this is where it's at! A well-portioned amount of crispy boneless chicken covered in sweet and spicy sauce, carried out in a cast iron pan. To make it better, tiny rice bits cover the chicken for extra crunch. To make it EVEN better, pieces of sauce-soaked Korean rice cakes are mixed in. SO. GOOD. Strawberry Milk Snow: I don't know what I was expecting for this. Something more like shaved ice? Nope. Milk snow is exactly what it is: creamy crystals that melted on impact. It was incredibly unique and the right amount of sweet with the ice cream and strawberries mixed in. 10/10, will choke on ice particles again. Goobne Chicken is goodne chicken. There, I said it. Though my puns are bad, Goobne isn't. And with this being one of several locations in HK, you can always get your fried chicken on. Slight bitterness from the grapefruit counters the chicken fat, making you feel the chicken is not that greasy or stomach feeling bloated. Will definitely be back.

The table next to us at breakfast ordered a dish that looked amazing, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the menu. Maybe it was a secret menu item, or perhaps you have to be a local to know about it. One thing to note: Yelp isn't always the most reliable source for Hong Kong restaurants since many listings and reviews can be quite dated. Google Reviews tends to be more accurate, but it's still worth double-checking because restaurants frequently change ownership, relocate, or close. As one of the better locations of the famous "Yung Gor" roast goose establishments, this Wan Chai…read morelocation turned out to be one of my most stellar meals during my recent trip to Hong Kong. The English name, Yung's Tangerine Peel Roast Goose Restaurant, might seem strange to most, but it is a literal translation of the Chinese name: 榕哥陳皮燒鵝. My experience was like many others: a packed house full of hungry locals shooting for an excellent rendition of traditional Cantonese roasted meats. Located on Lockhart Rd, this Yung Gor version is semi-large but fully packed during prime hours. Table sharing is highly likely in small groups, and the service works quickly to get orders started. The menu is in both Chinese and English and features a nice selection of meal sets to take the guesswork out of ordering. The prices at 50-68HKD seems reasonable but for folks fixated on the traditional bbq will pay anywhere from $55-180 depending on the order. I chose a 3 meat platter consisting of roasted siu yuk pork, char siu bbq pork, and roasted goose (燒肉叉燒燒鵝). The roasted goose was as excellent as advertised, juicy and tender all throughout. The char siu bbq pork was sweet enough to be a star on its own but the siu yuk roasted pork belly stole the show. The crispy skin was some of the best I've ever had. It was wonderfully fatty and went so well with the accompanying mustard condiment. I washed it all down with a iced lemon tea but couldn't help but think about the amazing platter I had. While I've heard excellent things about their Yau Ma Tei location, I am convinced Wan Chai really is worthy of a goose chase throughout the neighborhood. I am already plotting my next trip back and will absolutely include this place as a part of my must-eat rotation.

Originally inspired by the Korean dish Bibimbap, these rolls are best described as half sushi/half burrito with a traditional Korean twist. Sounds wild, I know. K-Roll now offer a great range of rolls including chicken, beef, shrimp & tofu, each featuring a selection of sauces to tailor each roll to your taste. I can't rave about this place enough & now with multiple locations throughout Hong Kong, K-Roll makes for a super convenient option for lunch on the run. I'm hungry just thinking about it!

K-Roll is one of the examples. It has one in Sheung Wan but I was pretty glad to hear that now they have one more branch in Central at the Central station. Honestly I am such a noob when it comes to Korean food, I always thought that Korean food is either kimchi or Korean Barbeque. That's it. Turns out there's much more. Over here you can order bite-sized kimbap rolls (basically a sushi roll without the raw fish), Korean burritos. They look a lot like Japanese rolls at first glance but the ingredients are mainly cooked like rice, tempura shrimp, fried dumpling skin, veggies, etc. They certainly bring out the Korean flavor with the special Korean sauce as well. To me, this place not only offers delicious food but all the food are very colourful and pleasing to the eyes. I understand that it is also very packed during lunch hour but guess what? At least you are waiting for your orders at a place with air conditioning.

However, the service is superb and the head manager and head chef sincerely asserted on the genuineness of the dish. There was never a long waiting period in between dishes. I was on vacation with my boyfriend's family, and I don't speak any Cantonese, so they took care of the communication part. I did see an Indian family while we were there, so I'm sure communication should be fine if you don't speak Cantonese. This meal was towards the end of our stay in HK and it's a good meal to cleanse your body. Afterwards, you can walk the strip on Nathan Road and go shopping - walk off your meal!

I think the trap is that dishes can *sound* vegetarian, but almost all common broths and sauces contains non-vegetarian items in it. Whenever I go vegetarian, I have a hard time finding more than one item on the menu at any cha chaan teng, because I know what actually goes in it. Which is what makes these sorts of vegetarian restaurants popular. Chinese vegetarian is not just "no killing of animals". They adhere to buddhist vegetarian habits, and don't use certain pungent vegetables like onions, garlic or chives in their cooking. That said, they are also somehow ok with making vegetables look and taste like meat. Gluten puffs that is chewy like a piece of stewed chicken? Sure! Soy protein packed together and sliced like ham? Why not. That is the sort of food you will get here -- vegetarian versions of popular pan-Chinese dishes, with the protein replaced by various plant-items ranging from the innocuous (tofu) to the there's-no-way-this-is-organic. Every bite brought me such surprise, because they do resemble the original dishes -- but it also makes me think, why? Are we not worthy to have vegetarian dishes that celebrate the vegetables on their own merit? That said, if you want some Chinese dishes but don't eat meat, this isn't bad and have a lot more variety of vegetarian dishes than other Chinese places. It also isn't bad for a good karma meal on Buddha's birthday. It just isn't something I actively look forward to.
