Its like the feeling walking thru the streets in Mong Kok or Causeway Bay but the crowds have moved out to the popular getaway areas such as Sai Kung. If that's the feeling you have you may want to check out this hidden jewel in Tai Tam. Its a small BBQ restaurant with maybe only 10-15 tables each with its own BBQ grill. There's nothing around here so you will definitely feel like you are out of the city. The staff fire up the grill for you and you just tell them what kinds of Cantonese BBQ meat you need and they will bring it out for you, and the best of all its all you can eat. The variety is not broad but they have the most common Cantonese BBQ meats. The place is clean and it was very nice place to relax and chill out on a Saturday evening. They have even Mah Jong table if you are keen to play a few rounds. Table reservation is recommended. Its not easy to get here and I don't think many people knows this place. Best way is by taxi and if not take bus 14 from Chai Wan MTR and get off after you pass Tai Tam Tuk reservoir dam its the bus stop on the first junction.

There is limited seating so it's best to come in a small group or do take away. Food: 4 stars Value: 4.5 stars Overall: 4.25 stars Recommendations: char siu, goose, duck leg It is definitely one of the better versions I have had and is comparable to the more high end iberico pork versions served in the Michelin restaurants. The char siu is not sweet at all and you get that nice touch of sweetness from the dipping sauce which is very good here. The consistency is not as thick as most places and has the right level of sweetness. I also had the duck leg here and that was also great. For a place with this type of reputation the price point is quite low. Usually when places in HK have a following the prices are at sit down restaurant levels. So I would be dissuaded by the fact that the price is slightly higher than in the cooked food center. Next time I do want to try the suckling pig.

I heard that they only roast 3 times a day and that's when you can get the best cuts. Otherwise you get the mediocre cuts. I ate in and ordered the 3 meats - duck, suckling pig, cha siu. The cha siu was 80% fat and had a big tendon across it. The suckling pig had super thick meat and the skin was more towards the burnt side. The duck was dry. I also don't see them advertise for the special cha siu cuts like 一片天,三粒叉,第一刀 so maybe it's a secret menu for the people in the know.

The soup is really good - for tourists, don't freak out if you find bits of chicken feet in bottom of the bowl. You don't have to eat them and its all been cooked down to create the great flavours in the soup. Finally, one additional perk of this place is you can get the food for takeaway and cross the street to Southhorn Playground to watch the weeknight 7-a-side football games, and perhaps learn a few choice words of Cantonese when a player shoots off target ;)
It's not much from the outside, but the Barbeque speaks for itself.

This time it was hot, humid, and rainy around 11:20 am and our party of 4 was able to get a table easily though it was crowded again once we were finished. This place is so famous we saw people come straight from the airport with all their luggage! Portions are very good and probably too small for most people but I loved the size. Goose and Soy Sauce Chicken: They are most known for their roast goose which has a complex and layered seasoning different than other HK roast duck/goose places. This is my go to dish, this time it tasted great but my portion of goose was super small and I split it with a friend to not get too full so it was even smaller. We also ordered the same dish with noodles and roast pork with soy chicken, both the people who had this never had Yat Lok before and totally cleared their plates, don't forget to mix each bite with some of the oil scorched green onions!

Not that there aren't any other BBQ sites in Hong Kong but I guess this one could be considered to…read morebe one with a twist. Situated on the seaside on Ting Kok road is a compound with a carpark on one side and a village side on the other- this is where all the BBQ happens. Its a pay first then all you can eat barbeque and as opposed to normal BBQ sites where you have to pay for BBQ "Packs" of steak, sausages etc- they have here everything on a stick ready for you. The special fact is that they have a huge range of food items and you can even pay more to have a pot placed on the coal fire (the stove is like a rectangular box that sits on the table); they way you can even cook other seafood items in brine/ beer too. As I have mentioned, these is nothing really, really special about this place but it is just the entire experience which makes it better than other places. There is always plenty of food (the staff work really hard to replace any depleted items, sometimes there is a bit of a queue) and the food items they offer aren't the general sorts too. You pay just once for food (though drinks are another matter) which makes the experience a lot more convenient. the stove itself is another attraction as it is a coal stove but its a small one that sits on a table, meaning that you don't all have to huddle around a BBQ oven and leave some people out on the table; just makes for a better atmosphere. Of course there are the bad parts: its tricky to get there if you don't drive, I would call the place plush (its a BBQ site what do you expect) and on a busy day the smoke could get so overwhelming that by the time you leave you do get asphyxiated and turned into a smoked salmon yourself from the smoke coming from all the stoves. Seating is a bit random as they have constantly added tables so some are proper tables whilst some further out are add ons. As I said, you can't expect too much.
Look, everywhere in Hong Kong is crowded. No one has access to BBQ very readily, so these BBQ areas…read moreare very popular. Except that, they are also very crowded. The good and easy thing about these places is that all you need to do is to show up. They sell everything including food, utensils and drinks. You don't have to haul anything here, or do any prep at all. Except for the fact that Hong Kong-style BBQ is more do it yourself (think long prongs over fire, like a boy scout would do), there is almost no work involved. On the other hand, I actually prefer to not just stare at people, their kids and their dogs when I'm by a beach. Again, Hong Kong is very crowded, but there are BBQ areas that are a bit less accessible and a lot more scenic out in the country parks. As long as you are willing to go out of your way for a little bit, and haul your foodstuff in, you will be rewarded. Those trips are my fondest memories growing up and this isn't remotely a fair representation of that. If you crave BBQ and must have it, then maybe this is ok. But why settle? The best things in life are things you have to work for.
