The egg tarts are turned out of their molds onto a piece of bread to prevent the crusts from breaking; it is weirdly fun to watch.

I've bought two birthday cakes from A-1; one is a very creatively designed birthday cake that's meant to bring good fortune - instead of cream and fruits like what's on most cakes, this one has shrimp, abalone and scallop on top! They actually look really real and I'm impressed with how closely they were able to recreate them! The cake itself is a mango cake. Although the cake looks really cool, it didn't taste amazing. It was a little too sweet for my liking and the mango tasted kind of artificial. The other cake, a mango ice cream cake, was actually bought just two days ago for my mother's birthday yesterday. When I placed the order and told them I wanted to pick it up tomorrow, they said they weren't sure if this was possible because normally ice cream cakes require you to preorder two days beforehand. Luckily, the staff spoke with somebody and said it was alright. I liked the ice cream cake better than the fortune cake - the mango ice cream was very refreshing and it was actually a little more solid than regular ice cream, which I actually liked because it meant that it didn't melt so quickly. However, I've tried ice cream cakes from Hagen Daiz and have to admit that they are definitely better! Overall, I would say that the bread at A-1 is better than the cakes are. The fortune cake was impressive visually, but didn't taste very good, and while the mango ice cream cake was better, it was still not amazing. Since 1984, the bakery focuses on traditional treats. Loved the banana cake which is light and addictively delicious. The pan fried mochi with sesame seeds is so unique. I honestly wish all bakeries could operate the way they do. There are no English signs and the workers do not speak much English at all. (#1) The place is old school and super local. Instead of grabbing a tray and serving yourself, in this setup the items are out on display in tubs and you point to each one that you want the worker to package for you. There is always a crowd here, so items run out quick. I love their version of the egg tart (蛋撻) and the wife cake (老婆餅) is one of the best I've had. A popular pastry is their hot dog pastry (腸仔包), which is fluffy and almost buttery with every bite. They have an awesome variety of shao bing (燒餅), which they bake and grill almost looking like stuffed pancakes, but they're usually filled with a sweeter ingredient such as bean paste (豆沙), sweetened custard (奶黃), azuki / red bean (紅豆), just to name a few. Everything ranges from $3-7 HKD, which in my book is extremely affordable. Try to target the items you want ahead of time and be sure to bring cash. Tai Tung has a long history in Hong Kong. It is famous for their wife cakes and pineapple buns…read more They were one of the major players in getting pineapple buns recognized as one of Hong Kong's 480 intangible cultural heritages in June of 2014. I recently visited this famed bakery and tried their original wife cake and one that is green bean and ginger flavored. Both were warm, flaky and gooey in the middle. I loved that the original was not too sweet and had an extremely fresh flavor. The green bean and ginger was also really interesting. I liked that there was just a hint of ginger and that it wasn't overpowering. Because I didn't learn until later that they were also famous for their pineapple buns during my first visit, I had to return to check them out. I bought an original pineapple bun and a Tai Tung pineapple bun. The original one was rather disappointing. It might have been that I didn't get one that was fresh out of the oven and it was cold that day so they cooled down quicker than normal. The top wasn't especially crispy and the bottom was actually kind of rubbery. The Tai Tung pineapple bun is interesting because it has pineapple inside! I didn't think that the pineapple filling actually added too much pineapple flavor to the bun though. Although unique, I was also a little bit disappointed with this one. I would say stick with the wife cake and skip the pineapple buns from here.
