A-1 Bakery is probably my most-frequented bakery shop due to its convenient location in New Town Plaza. I often buy bread from there, such as the mushroom and sausage bread and the ham and egg. They have a pretty large selection available and I often see staff bringing out freshly-cooked batches, so I'm reassured that the things here are freshly made.
I've bought two birthday cakes from A-1; one is a very creatively designed birthday cake that's meant to bring good fortune - instead of cream and fruits like what's on most cakes, this one has shrimp, abalone and scallop on top! They actually look really real and I'm impressed with how closely they were able to recreate them! The cake itself is a mango cake. Although the cake looks really cool, it didn't taste amazing. It was a little too sweet for my liking and the mango tasted kind of artificial. The other cake, a mango ice cream cake, was actually bought just two days ago for my mother's birthday yesterday. When I placed the order and told them I wanted to pick it up tomorrow, they said they weren't sure if this was possible because normally ice cream cakes require you to preorder two days beforehand. Luckily, the staff spoke with somebody and said it was alright. I liked the ice cream cake better than the fortune cake - the mango ice cream was very refreshing and it was actually a little more solid than regular ice cream, which I actually liked because it meant that it didn't melt so quickly. However, I've tried ice cream cakes from Hagen Daiz and have to admit that they are definitely better!
Overall, I would say that the bread at A-1 is better than the cakes are. The fortune cake was impressive visually, but didn't taste very good, and while the mango ice cream cake was better, it was still not amazing. I don't think I'll be buying cakes from A-1 anymore but will continue buying their bread! read more
