I love cake, and I have a problem with some cafés serving ridiculously small, practically pea-sized…read more(okay, maybe not really!) cakes at sky-high prices. $45 for a piece of cake I can finish in five bites or less? No, thank you. And that's where Italian Tomato comes in. If you've bought a slice of cake at Italian Tomato, or even passed by it, you'll know that their cakes are strangely massive. They are approximately twice the size of regular cakes from say, Agnes B, and not as expensive too! Italian Tomato always has a range of cakes on display, such as the classic cheesecake strawberry and cream, etc. I recently saw that they have a white peach cake, which sounds really interesting! To me, peaches are of a very soft, delicate flavor, so I can't imagine how they cakes that are peach-flavored would taste like. One of my favorite Italian Tomato cakes is the strawberry and cream sponge cake. It has a couple of strawberries - yes, whole strawberries - on the cake, which is really generous! The strawberries are very sweet and the cake itself is soft and creamy. The two make a great dynamic duo and I'm craving it as we speak! Another favorite of mine is the Black Forest. I used to eat the one from Saint Honore all the time when I was a kid, so bite after bite of any Black Forest cake just brings back a rush of memories. This isn't just any Black Forest cake, though. Like the strawberries in the cream sponge cake, they're very generous with the cherries here and you can taste them with every bite. The chocolate to cream ratio is just right, and the chocolate shavings add a kind of nice, contrasting texture to the otherwise very smooth cake. This is a great place to buy cake if you're sick of the overpriced cakes game. If you're at the Italian Tomato at Yata in Sha Tin and you can't wait (like me), you can buy your cake and eat it immediately at the nearby food court. Oh, and just a random musing - why's Italian Tomato called ITALIAN Tomato? I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese brand... And speaking of that, why tomato? They aren't even used in cakes! Don't let my random musings about its name throw you off though - I guarantee you'll like the cakes here, and if you don't, well, then it's on me!

Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. As I looked around there's a few auntie introducing their specialty and pastry, all of them were so nice. Not sure whether this cafe is run by families but they are all too friendly that make me feel so. As for the food, there is a great variety here. Besides usual bakery items like bread, cake, pastry, there are also lasagna, Shepherds pie, beef pie etc., all baked and served in a pot. Quite special which cannot be found in other place. We have ordered a beef pie and a lasagna, and found later on that they were very similar (should have ordered a shepherds pie instead!!) Both were very yummy. :) The latte was great too!

I like that Ali Oli uses an electronic pager to let you know when your order is ready. Eat outside for best view of dogs. However, it will be necessary to eat inside if one is allergic to pets. Customers appeared to include local poodle owners, former cosmetics executives, diplomats, models, and country manager ex-pats. Good table and pet manners are on display to help create a pleasant atmosphere. This is a good place to take kids to observe how polite customers and staff can be.

Choux Creme is recognizable from about a mile away from the red block letters that the words 'choux…read morecreme' are written in and the sweet, wafting smell. As its name suggests, Choux Creme sells cream puffs. I always walk past it when I'm at the Sha Tin station, and it seems that there is permanently a line of people plus groups huddled over the displays and deciding which flavor to get. The temptation is hard to resist and I find myself gravitating towards the end of the line more often than I'd like to admit. The cream puffs here come in a variety of flavors - there's original, of course, and there's Hokkaido milk, tiramisu and strawberry yogurt flavors, to name a few. In keeping up with the matcha trend, there's an uji matcha green tea flavor too. My favorite of them all is the original - there's just something refreshing about sticking with the classic that I really like. The cream is nice and cold, and the puff is a little crisp on the outside but soft on the inside. I've also tried the crispy chocolate cream puff, which I didn't like as much because the chocolate taste was overwhelming and the puff was messy to eat. I had to go wash the chocolate sauce that had clung onto my hands afterwards! The matcha cream puff is not bad too though the matcha flavor is quite sweet. I would definitely recommend giving Choux Creme a go. The puffs start at $16 which isn't too expensive (they've increased in price though; last year I had an original and it was $15), but I would say that they are slightly smaller than the ones at Beard Papa.

You can literally SMELL the fresh puffs right when you step inside the Sha Tin Station. Most disappointing thing was that the puff wasn't crispy! It wasn't "stale", but it didn't have that airy crunch I was expecting. Also, the "tiramisu" flavoring was just simple cocoa powder/coffee powder on top of the cream. Definitely not worth $20 and probably won't be getting it again.. :( I'll just continue to admire the smell from afar.

It seems to be one of the most populated places in that area as people come and go throughout the day. The bakery is off site but delivers to this shop multiple times a day, bringing fresh baked breads, cakes, and other goods as they make them. The shop is rather small even though it spans the width of two commercial spaces with bread and cake loaves to the left and refrigerated cakes and pastries to the right. Having visited this shop numerous times in the past decade, the signs of popularity has not wane. The prices are also very reasonable and the quality of the goods are always up to par. Remember to bring your own bag for all the goods you buy if you don't want to pay for a bag. The staff are very quick to ring customers up and get them on their way. A few favorite items that are worth writing home about include their raisin bread and buns, salted egg yolk Swiss roll, paper wrapped sponge cake, and mont blanc tarts. Cakes are soft and spongy, bread is soft and tasty, and the pastries are not too sweet. So wonderful for any time of day. However, if you get there too early or late you may miss out on some items as they either haven't arrived from the off site bakery or have already sold out for the day.
