No, thank you. And that's where Italian Tomato comes in. If you've bought a slice of cake at Italian Tomato, or even passed by it, you'll know that their cakes are strangely massive. They are approximately twice the size of regular cakes from say, Agnes B, and not as expensive too! Italian Tomato always has a range of cakes on display, such as the classic cheesecake strawberry and cream, etc. I recently saw that they have a white peach cake, which sounds really interesting! To me, peaches are of a very soft, delicate flavor, so I can't imagine how they cakes that are peach-flavored would taste like. One of my favorite Italian Tomato cakes is the strawberry and cream sponge cake. It has a couple of strawberries - yes, whole strawberries - on the cake, which is really generous! The strawberries are very sweet and the cake itself is soft and creamy. The two make a great dynamic duo and I'm craving it as we speak! Another favorite of mine is the Black Forest. I used to eat the one from Saint Honore all the time when I was a kid, so bite after bite of any Black Forest cake just brings back a rush of memories. This isn't just any Black Forest cake, though. Like the strawberries in the cream sponge cake, they're very generous with the cherries here and you can taste them with every bite. The chocolate to cream ratio is just right, and the chocolate shavings add a kind of nice, contrasting texture to the otherwise very smooth cake. This is a great place to buy cake if you're sick of the overpriced cakes game. If you're at the Italian Tomato at Yata in Sha Tin and you can't wait (like me), you can buy your cake and eat it immediately at the nearby food court. Oh, and just a random musing - why's Italian Tomato called ITALIAN Tomato? I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese brand... And speaking of that, why tomato? They aren't even used in cakes! Don't let my random musings about its name throw you off though - I guarantee you'll like the cakes here, and if you don't, well, then it's on me!

For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. The bakery is off site but delivers to this shop multiple times a day, bringing fresh baked breads, cakes, and other goods as they make them. The shop is rather small even though it spans the width of two commercial spaces with bread and cake loaves to the left and refrigerated cakes and pastries to the right. Having visited this shop numerous times in the past decade, the signs of popularity has not wane. The prices are also very reasonable and the quality of the goods are always up to par. Remember to bring your own bag for all the goods you buy if you don't want to pay for a bag. The staff are very quick to ring customers up and get them on their way. A few favorite items that are worth writing home about include their raisin bread and buns, salted egg yolk Swiss roll, paper wrapped sponge cake, and mont blanc tarts. Cakes are soft and spongy, bread is soft and tasty, and the pastries are not too sweet. So wonderful for any time of day. However, if you get there too early or late you may miss out on some items as they either haven't arrived from the off site bakery or have already sold out for the day.
