The cha siu bao had noticable pieces of meat in it. The ma lai gao (sponge cake) is definitely more light and fluffy than any other that Ive had. The flavors of all the dishes were very good. The stir fried noodles was a bit dry but had a lot of shrimp in it. Overall, would highly recommend this place to eat especially since it is in a convenient location. You can come here to eat after shopping around in the city gate outlets or after you go ride the cable car back down from seeing the buddha.

As for the dishes, our favorites were the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork and Steamed Egg Cake, which they are known for and indeed taste delicious. Hubby liked their Pan Fried Turnip Cake. We also liked the Glutinous Rice Dumpling which was 1 huge leaf wrapped steamed rice with meat (law mae gae). The Steamed Rice with Chicken Feet and Spareribs was another tasty dish. One for each of the things that do it for me: Service, ambience, food, price and "Will I come back?" Edit: Was Shanghai Hairy Crab Special! So tried the Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao, Shanghai Rice Noodles with Crab Roe, Glutinous Balls with Crab Roe in a light broth. All fantastic. All worth the price. I had: Double boiled chicken soup with lamian. Soup is incredible, rich but not overpowering. Savoury and subtle. This is my favourite. Paired with a bowl of plain lamian, pour the soup over the noodles and swoon. Fried pork rib (actually a pork chop) with lamian. The noodles come in a bowl of savoury clear broth. This is so good by itself. The pork rib is deep fried and over cooked, so, meh. Xiao long bao (XLB). Each order comes in a bamboo steamer. The 4 little dumplings are perfect, the skin is delicate encapsulating a spoonful of tasty gravy and minced pork. Be careful picking each dumpling up! You don't want to accidentally break it, spilling and wasting all the juicy goodness. You also want to let it cool a bit first before biting into it. Pan fried pao. Three pork paos are lightly pan fried, giving the bottom of each pao a crispy crunchy base. So moreish! Pork jelly. Delicately pulled pork is set in a jelly and cut into cubes, served chilled. I dip each cube in a light vinegar before eating, so refreshing and light! Yum. Gyoza. Really juicy gyoza. Nuff said. Steamed pao. I tried the vegetarian version. Fluffy and light with some chopped vegetables wrapped inside. I should have just ordered the pork pao. The service staff were attentive and kept the hot tea refilled. I like that! The price of noodles are about HK$60 to $100. XLB and other baos are about HK$40 to $50. I may have found a new XLB favourite. Might even be better than Din Tai Fung. Will need to compare!

Other hits were the Lo Mai Gai, Spare Ribs, Vegetable dumplings. Overall, some of the best Dim Sum food around that comes at a steeper price. We made a reservation at 7pm but was running late. At 7:05, we get a call from the front desk asking where we are because if we don't show up, they are going to release our table for other waiting parties. I tell them 5 minutes, and I show up in 5 minutes. No problem. First impression, this restaurant is LOUD. It's crowded, it's LOUD. Chairs and tables are right next to each other, it's hard to get between tables. You would expect that at a formerly Michelin restaurant called "The Square" at Exchange Square in Central, would be relaxing and nice, and somewhat quiet. It was quite the opposite. While the seats were a little more upscale and comfortable, the atmosphere felt like a zoo. The tea menu was confusing - there was a standard tea/water charge of HK$18 per person. But if you ordered a "premium" pot of tea, the pp tea charge would be scrapped and you'd just pay for each tea pot. Not sure if they were going to charge you that fixed amount every time you refilled with hot water... But we didn't bother as we didn't want to drink tea at night. The edamame and mixed nuts snack that they provide on the table at the start of the meal is NOT complimentary. It's not free and they charge you for it. HK$28 per bowl. How sneaky. We only found at at the end when paying the bill. There were two bowls of it on our table, so we were charged HK$56. It's not a large sum of money, but to misguided your customers like that? Not cool. Strike one. By the time we were ordering our food, at least half of our desired selection was already SOLD OUT. I say this is poor ingredient planning on the food manager. If you are expecting some dishes to be ordered more than other, be sure to have more stock of those. It's that simple right?! The roast goose was sold out, char siu (barbecue pork) was sold out, the classic Cantonese dish of minced pork meat pie, also sold out. At this point, I wanted to just walk out of the restaurant. Why stay if they can't offer the best food? We asked if the set menu was available, the manager said they couldn't serve it because some of the dishes were "out of stock". Strike two. Or maybe it's three at this point. They also sold out of the fried red bean pancake for dessert when I tried to order it. Definitely a strike three now. When we asked for hot water refills, the servers kept trying to put a pot of tea on our table when we hadn't even ordered tea. What kind of BS is this? I hand you one pot of water, and you return with the water plus a pot of tea we did not request? The same thing happened twice, with the SAME server, with the SAME kind of tea! Unbelievable... I have nothing bad to say about all the items that we had. Each one of us paid about 80 HKD and was able to try 13 different items. The quality of everything was top notch and comparable to bougie dimsum in America where each dish would be $5-$7 USD. The item that stood out to me was the bbq pork bun. The breading was soft, bbq pork was tender and full of flavor and the top was sweet. Overall I thought that the flavors and texture were spot on and made this a wonderful plate. Can't wait for Tim Ho Wan to come to America. Hopefully they retain their pricing as well.
