As someone who works in Mong Kok, Bonnie's has become a very popular little lunch spot for my co-workers. While the food isn't mindblowingly good, the prices are remarkably low (we're talking the low end of double digits) for lunch sets that come with a free beverage and dessert on top of your entree.
Like I said, the food isn't great. To put it as plainly and objectively as I can, it's adequate, or satisfactory. You don't come here to pursue your yearning for a culinary adventure, but what you get will cure you of your hunger for about 6 hours or more. I ordered a Pad Thai with a Thai iced tea, as I thought that would be the safest bet, since you really can't mess up Pad Thai, or a iced tea that is specifically associated with your cuisine. I was right. The Thai iced tea was just right, sweet, but not too sweet, and you could taste just the right amount of tamarind in it. The Pad Thai was also fine, I would have preferred the noodles to have had a chewier texture, but otherwise the Pad Thai sauce was fine, though it would have benefitted from having a more generous amount added to it (I feel that the sweet and sour flavour is what makes a Pad Thai so great in the first place).
The free dessert came in the form of a sweet agar jelly based dessert with two flavours. One is coconut flavoured while the other seemed to be soy flavoured (I should probably ask for the latter). I would say that they're not something that everyone would enjoy as the texture of agar (i.e. seaweed) can be a bit odd for some due to it's crunchy, yet soft texture. This makes it seem really lumpy, particularly since agar doesn't really dissolve/melt in your mouth like a spoonful of jello does. While there's a chance that you won't like it, I'd suggest just taking a little bite to see for yourself. It doesn't technically cost you anything, so be adventurous and try it out. read more
