Came here on recommendation of my cousin. We ordered the hot and cold matcha soba noodles. I was…read moreexpecting to taste the matcha flavor, but alas, it didn't happen. The broth for the hot noodles tasted great though : light, not overly seasoned, tasted like the kind of broth you'd make at home. My husband said the cold soba was nothing special. We then finished our meal off with the matcha jelly (flown in daily from Kyoto!), which was really good, definitely full of matcha flavor and went well with the ice cream and red bean paste. My husband gave the matcha ice cream two thumbs up. 90 min dining limit and everyone must order one item. No free wifi. HSBC credit card holders get a discount.

One of the great foodie trends in Hong Kong is the matcha craze. Already slowly making its presence…read moreknown in the US, matcha and matcha flavored desserts are gaining popularity. It's already a huge thing in Hong Kong, with at least one matcha dessert store at every mall. When I found out that a well known matcha chain, Nakamura Tokichi, was opening up its first branch in HK, I made it a point to plan to visit and give it a try. Unsurprisingly, as with all well known restaurants in Hong Kong, there was a fairly long wait even on a Wednesday. I had to wait almost two hours to get a table for six people. When we were finally seated, we were presented with complimentary green tea and a menu filled with delicious goodies. I tried the green tea almost immediately, and already I was floored. Most green tea tastes fairly bland and generic, but this green tea was incredibly rich and flavorful. As to be expected from a matcha restaurant with as prestigious a reputation as Nakamura Tokichi. We shared several matcha and hojicha parfaits, a hojicha ice cream, and I got the kyo no fukiyose, which contained several different things including chiffon cake, matcha ice cream, red bean, whipped cream, and mochi. The parfaits were incredibly rich and elegant. Cereal was added to the red bean and ice cream, and the flavors all blended together perfectly. The chiffon cake was sweet yet light. The red bean was a real delight, not too sweet, and balanced out the sweetness of the hojicha and matcha ice cream incredibly well. In just one experience, I can see why Nakamura Tokichi is one of the most well known matcha restaurants in Hong Kong. It lives up to its own hype in many ways.

Good to know: It was rather hard finding the location of MingCha Tea House since it is located in a…read morebusiness area with no real signs on where to go. When you exit the elevator in the building it looks like you got to a butcher, but don't sweat it, the entrance should be right infront of your nose. The store itself is not the prettiest, but that's not why I went here. I heard that the best tea in Hong Kong could be found here and that they had neat little packages of tea which you could gift (手信). My friend and I tasted five different teas and got introduced to a whole new world of tea! It was spectacular. If you are a tea lover like me this is a must go to place. They really teach you a lot about tea and if you would ever forget, all the instructions for each specific tea is on the tea bag! I ended up buying dozens of small gifts for near and dear and from what I have heard they all liked it very much.

I took the Tea Tasting Workshop at MingCha in mid-May (2016) and had a superb experience. I signed…read moreup for the workshop prior to going to HK, but found out later that another expensive and already-paid-for day-long tour to mainland China I'd signed up for had rescheduled the tour to the same day as the tea workshop. I emailed Tomoko to see if I could move to a different tea workshop, and she was very kind and accommodating. In fact, she did a workshop for me and another couple at a time that she usually doesn't do workshops, which I was grateful for. I'd read about the workshop and the rave reviews did not let me down. Tomoko is very, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about tea, and I learned a lot. We got to try 5 different types of tea, and each tea had three steepings, for a total of 15 tastings. She used several different types of tea sets (pots and cups), which was really neat. She taught us the rituals of making and serving tea, way beyond the boil-water-and-add-tea method. The teas were wonderful, and I learned soooo much about how tea leaves are processed in different ways for the different teas. Now, know that the shop is hard to find, but if you exit the MTR at the right exit (Taikoo station, exit A1), it is literally right across the street, in between a Mercedes Benz shop and a furniture store. When you exit from A1, cross the street. It's hard to see the sign for the Wah Ha Factory Building from that vantage point, but trust me, it is there between those two businesses. Others have provided pictures, which helped me, because the shop is located in an improbable location, and you may be concerned that you've gone to the wrong place. When you exit the elevator on the 12th floor in the factory, the shop is the door on the right. If you're thinking about doing this workshop, go for it! It is really a neat experience.

Are my friends in the states reading this? Yes, you read that right, Tin Kuan yim Soft served Ice cream. It was every single drip of ice cream you dream of! it was so tea-ish! Nice, Ten Ren Tea Station basically for Hong Kong, dubbed as 天仁喫茶趣. Based on multiple visits in the…read morelast 2+ years (plus having had Ten Ren drinks in Taipei) I have to say this location comes pretty darn close. Comparing Ten Ren tea drinks in Northern (and Southern) California to this Hong Kong location: Prices in Hong Kong are dirt cheap in comparison, nothing really above US$2 on average. Quality is easily x2 to x3 than that in NorCal (and quite possibly SoCal) Thus we pay x2 to x3 as much at 1/2 to 1/3 of the quality, bottom line. Employees are very efficient. A ten minute wait for a drink after paying, is considered a hellish wait even if the line seems long. Even if one of the employees is slacking off, he or she is washing/rinsing cups or blender vats in one hand, and surfing social media/checking texts with the other. Multi-task slacking and getting drinks out the door. And some of you out there have no qualms about 1.5 hour wait for ramen (or a food truck), or 45 minutes for a watered down tapioca milk tea drink. Sigh. This Ten Ren also has a limited selection of imported Taiwanese tea, tea snacks. Octopus (MTR/subway/public transportation) cards accepted for payment (stored value card). You can sip on your drink while browsing books and magazines in Eslite bookstore. Honey green tea, some matcha based drinks, even a classic like Chrysanthemum Pu-Er, are all very good. Honey green tea, even if semi diluted, is still better than the crap in the States....the Wattes....(like Lattes in coffee shops, except Watte is water with a shot of tea). What more can you ask for?

Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule.
