I am never one to wait in a line (life is short and I choose to not wait in lines), but by rare chance this weekend, we walked by and there was barely a line. When I asked my Chinese husband why this brand was so popular, he said that they are no more expensive than other bubble tea spots, but they use a better tea. Our tea drink cost $18HKD, plus an extra $4HKD for our pearl add on. You place your order from the street counter from their extensive menu, pay and then wait for your number to be called (they did request to see the receipt when we grabbed your drink, so be sure to not throw away or anything before you snag your beverage). The menu is in Chinese and English, it is clear to understand your options and you can always add pearls to any drink that might not already have them. Some drinks served with ice, others are not. We shared the lemon premium jasmine green teat (and added pearls) from the "suggested menu." It tasted like a really satisfying lemon shake-up (my Midwestern roots are showing!). Sweet, satsifying, very delicious. I also loved that it is served in a paper versus a plastic cup. An environmentally friendly niche can make someone like me more loyal to one brand over another. The shop is fronted by glass, so you can see the dozen or so employees almost surgically preparing the tea drinks. There were maybe 15 people mulling about ordering and waiting like us and it took maybe 8-10 minutes for us to get our drink. Not certain I would wait with the masses when they are super busy, but I will definately snag one on the times I see there is little to no line.

I love the logo on the uniquely shaped cups, I think it really allows the brand to stand out from its competitors. But I was also pleasantly pleased by how smooth the milk tasted. When I found out that a well known matcha chain, Nakamura Tokichi, was opening up its first branch in HK, I made it a point to plan to visit and give it a try. Unsurprisingly, as with all well known restaurants in Hong Kong, there was a fairly long wait even on a Wednesday. I had to wait almost two hours to get a table for six people. When we were finally seated, we were presented with complimentary green tea and a menu filled with delicious goodies. I tried the green tea almost immediately, and already I was floored. Most green tea tastes fairly bland and generic, but this green tea was incredibly rich and flavorful. As to be expected from a matcha restaurant with as prestigious a reputation as Nakamura Tokichi. We shared several matcha and hojicha parfaits, a hojicha ice cream, and I got the kyo no fukiyose, which contained several different things including chiffon cake, matcha ice cream, red bean, whipped cream, and mochi. The parfaits were incredibly rich and elegant. Cereal was added to the red bean and ice cream, and the flavors all blended together perfectly. The chiffon cake was sweet yet light. The red bean was a real delight, not too sweet, and balanced out the sweetness of the hojicha and matcha ice cream incredibly well. In just one experience, I can see why Nakamura Tokichi is one of the most well known matcha restaurants in Hong Kong. It lives up to its own hype in many ways.

Mason jar lights dangle from the ceiling and a light teal wall and yellow flowers brightens the room. My friend and I sat here for a little over an hour sketching the space. They give you a buzzer that beeps when ur food is ready for pick up- my pancakes took around 20 min, as there was a group of 5 in front of me. I was worried it was because this was a different branch than where I went last night and that my regular milk tea would be too sweet too, but it was consistent. So word of caution, different drinks can vary in sweetness (I'm guessing flavored drinks are automatically sweeter). Coffee jelly was standard, small blocks that were pretty firm. Oh, and if you need a bag to carry multiple drinks, they charge you .50HKD. Wish I had more time to try their other drinks as they have a pretty wide variety besides milk tea. As of now, their herbal jelly is reason enough for me to stop by any future Gong Cha branches I see! Luckily they have branches in the states as well.

My favorite thus far is the Roasted Oolong with the cream cheese foam top. I asked for 0% sugar and less ice so that I could taste the contrast between the smooth cheese and the bittersweet Oolong tea. I do appreciate the design of the Cha Long cups that makes it easier to drink the cheese top drinks, which has now become an art form. The starting price of HK$30 is a little steep, I'll admit, but you won't be disappointed.
