Forget the long line, forget the hype, it comes down to the cookie. If you are an American and I am not joking when I say this, it just will give you a comparison to completely understand....Jenny Bakery is like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. Let me point out the comparisons:
1) Hype...all the buzz in the HK cosmos about the infamous Jenny cookies.
2) Waiting in line to enter the store....because of the hype, you are willing to wait in line and you are not sure why.
3) Staff...treat you like "buy your cookies & give me your money & don't ask for any variation or friendly conversation...get your cookies and get out...you should feel privledged to buy our cookies." The clearly wealthy woman behind the register has the entire look of "I am the wealthy cookie lady and I dont want to smile or be friendly or be welcoming and I just want your money for my cookies because they are the best."
4) Queing line at counter...you scoot along with the masses and pick your cookies, pay your cash and leave...like a conveyor belt.
5) Exit...you leave the store and kind of feel like they have done you a favor by selling you cookies although you were not treating in a warm and friendly manner.
5) And finally, the cookie. Delish!
Now I dont eat a lot of cookies, but around the holiday time, I save my taste buds for the best I can find. I save my calories for the best of the best when it comes to cookies. I wont eat prepackaged store bought stuff and finding a great cookie can be tough. These cookies are great. Butter, lard, salt, sugar whatever...they are using all the stuff you want to have in a cookie if you are going to kill the calorie idea and consume a great cookie. The cookie has a Scottish shortbread consistency and texture. I give my review on any of their varities, but LOVE LOVE LOVE the coffee flavored cookie the best. It is flavorful, buttery, dense, a little flaky, addicting and tastes and smells like coffee.
These cookies are so good by my standard, that I am tossing all that I know about customer service and how I normally would score down on Yelp if the customer service is not there. Customer service in this place is crap, but I am still giving them a 5. It is like getting a slap in the face and then being given a tin of cookies, but I still am giving them a 5. With the Soup Nazi feel or not, these cookies are good.
NOTE: They only take cash and you can only buy two small tins of cookie during any one purchase (small tins are $70HKD & larger tins are like $130HKD). Because of their demand (fueled by the hype and their own hype really, and the line, etc. etc. etc...see how this works in the commercial market!), they can do this. I went with the focus of getting small tins for X-mas gifts to people, so I have had to go back a few times becasue they only allow me to buy two small tins at a time per day. read more
