My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

There are multiple stores in Macau and from what I could tell, the prices were the same even if you were closer to the ferry. There are boxes of cookie, jerky, etc samples throughout the store and the employees are typically a little pushy to get you in and looking around. I think it's because that's half the battle. Once you're in and you try a sample, you'll walk out with full yellow bags of goodies! Highly recommend: Walnut and peanut brittle which was very light and crunchy vs the American version that feels like you're going to break your teeth! At $15 USD for a generous size box and gorgeous packaging, it was a great souvenir. We got packaged jerky instead of the fresh jerky that you can buy by the pound. The employee said it was the same but the packaged ones come in little 2" sealed chunks. Instructions say to heat it up prior to eating which resulted in a smoky microwave and super hot napalm covered jerky. Pineapple cakes: get the big box. Tender and almost crumbly cake / cookie outside and pineapple filling; you can see the chunks of fruit! Absolute perfection. Shortbread cookies: comes in multiple flavors. My son loved the chocolate chip the best. Some of the packaging at Kee Wah looks similar to Koi Kei but they are not the same. Both are good but Koi Kei is top notch. Can't wait to visit again!

One thing I do not understand is that the items in the HK Koi Kei is way more expensive than the Macau Koi Kei. I suggest you get it at Macau. Also the Macau Koi Kei is crazy packed full of people and HK Koi Kei is very quiet. I mean of course if you do not want to travel to Macau then you might as well get it here. Well yea, I can be a freak lol, but in this case it's all the bakeries "so far", not all were exceptional, but damn most are! Tai Cheong Bakery is the OG of bakeries on my list. Established in 1954 here on Lyndhurst Terrace, Tai Cheong Bakery is a legendary Hong Kong bakery famed for pioneering cookie-crust egg tarts. Known as a favorite of the last British Governor, Chris Patten, it is considered a must-visit for warm, buttery egg tarts, along with their signature Sha Weng (Chinese donuts). Bakehouse and Hashtag B Bakeries are the innovative ones that turned the "egg tart wars" upside down with modern recipes and Michelin baby followers lol. On the other side you have Tai Cheong Bakery that has been using the same recipe for 72 years. All amazing bakeries yet something in my heart will always favor the originals. On my visit I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was second in line. For the 10 minutes I chatted with the sweet Korean lady who was there for the same reason as me... original egg tarts! There's a menu sign posted outside - lucky for those waiting in line because it's a photo menu with Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English translation. Once the doors opened I was second in line and the line of about a dozen formed behind me. Auntie greeted me in English and I ordered the following: Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) 12 HK$ x2, Puff Pastry Egg Tart 12 HK$, Milk Protein Egg Tart 15 HK$, BBQ Pork Pastry 7 HK$ x2. I actually wanted the Coconut Egg Tart, but oddly I ended up with eh Milk Protein Egg Tart. Ok, still ate it! Ambiance can be described as a good chi bakery, and apparently this is the original location from 1954, if so it was really clean and inviting. I didn't see a sit-down area tho. Everything I had delicious, yes including the Milk Protein Egg Tart I didn't order lol. The traditional Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) amazing with flaky crust and tasty filling expected from only the best Dan Tat! In the end, Tai Cheong Bakery is a must for egg tart fanatics. In fact, the menu was diverse enough to walk out with no egg tarts and still be happy as a clam. I heard the buns here are delicious. My only regret was not having a second visit, but it's only because it's located in Central and I was staying in Causeway Bay. Next time I'll jump on the Ding Ding for a second visit! The dan tat is underrated and the price is quite good for a bakery in the area these days. I can't dispute $4 HKD (about 50 cents USD). The tart crust is ridiculously flaky and the egg filling has the right amount of sweetness. The walnut cookie was flaky and buttery. While I didn't take pictures of the store, all of the store pictures at the time of this writing are before recent renovations. The bakery is more roomy and contemporary inside.

After trying a few of their treats, it is now one of the few awesome bakeries that are in my active rotation for places I visit most. The place is dingy and trapped from another time. Jordan is no stranger to such establishments; it even evokes a pseudo San Francisco Chinatown vibe as many of the bakeries there are also stuck in the 90s. No matter, these places don't earn the love of the local crowd by looking pretty. They win everyone over with the food and in a big way. What got me hooked to start were their BBQ pork pastries, priced at a cool $4 each. They're flaky, crisp with just the right amount of pork. I would also give it up for their almond cookies, which are made fresh daily and taste heavenly. Buy an entire sack or tin for less than $15 and be happy. Other kudos goes out to their pineapple buns and hotdog buns -- satisfying in a pinch and easy to buy on the go. Lastly, the service deserves a mention. The women who operate this bakery from the morning to the afternoon are super friendly and I've seen them spare a bao or two for the less fortunate outside. It's a hard life out there and the compassion is hard not to recognize. That's the kind of service everyone could use.

Since 1984, the bakery focuses on traditional treats. Loved the banana cake which is light and addictively delicious. The pan fried mochi with sesame seeds is so unique. The shop has a decent line that moves quickly. No surprise that it has been Michelin recommended and featured on Netflix. Next time, I'll try the wife cake.

What I got to eat was quite good, however. The filling is smooth and not too sweet while the crumbly crust provided some (I suppose) structure to the dessert. There isn't a strong cream cheese flavor but more of a neutral cream flavor. I was just rather disappointed that I looked like a slob as I was consuming the dispersed dessert that resembled me dropping it on the floor. Like the decor, the service is minimal. While staff is not grumpy, don't expect much of a reception here.

TST will forever have outlets of popular fad businesses. Only I don't think cheese tarts are a fad and that I think they're here to stay. Most folks can't get enough of them, myself included, especially at this location along Cameron Road. During the day time, the hubbub is so much that this place is often a mess during peak rush hours. It's easy to see why: the tarts are cheesy, ultra savory, and come in various flavors (baked cheese, matcha green tea, chocolate, egg custard). The only thing they aren't is cheap, which at $22HKD is a good grip for a single tart. Tarts aren't the only game for baked goods at this location thankfully, an item that often gets overlooked are their individual baked cheese cakes and custom pastries. In terms of selection, they alone put this location over their sister spot in Causeway Bay. My favorite of the bunch are the Blueberry Cheesecakes (藍莓芝士蛋糕), which I caution for lactose in tolerant folks is not kind to your insides. I would suggest a Caramel Egg Pudding (焦糖雞蛋布甸) instead. Last I visited, it was cash or octopus card only. They're always well staffed (if not overstaffed) with lots of eager young ladies who are looking to offer freshly baked Japanese goods to the masses. For cheese tart fans anywhere, this is one of the better spots to slay your inner cheesy cravings.
