The Ocean Empire chain brings traditional Chinese congee and condiments such as sweet or salty fried dough sticks/puffs, noodles, cheung fun and glutinous rice to the forefront of common high-street restaurants. It does Chinese congee justice with impressively big portions at worthy prices, a good variety on their menu that will satisfy most and have always had provided excellent service, both clean and efficient.
Since Shatin is full of touristy places to eat within its many shopping centres, the Ocean Empire located just outside the Shatin shopping centre in a more low-key outdoors shopping complex, is a wise place to eat good value Chinese food. Unfortunately there is no English translation on the menu as this is very much a place for regular locals to eat but nevertheless the menu is clearly displayed upon entering, ordering is efficient at a till by the entrance and collecting of food is equally easy following a conveyor belt / ticket system.
The congee contains adequate amounts of ingredients; the shrimp cheung fun is nicely soft with a balanced distribution of shrimp and spring onion, the glutinous rice packet is suitably sticky and tasty with a nicely salty interior including salty preserved egg; and the fried dough was soft, with good texture inside and out.
In short, Ocean Empire can offer a pleasant, filling, freshly prepared and traditional meal at anytime throughout the day, particularly useful as a pit-stop to re-energise after bouts of shopping! read more
