If you are looking for a very unique dining experience in Hong Kong, look no further than this fish market. My recommendation would be to go with a local, as the market can be daunting as a foreigner. A group of us went here for dinner and it was unlike anything I have experienced. You walk through stalls and stalls of vendors selling live seafood to the highest bidder. You will see everything - every kind of fish imaginable, octopus, crabs as big as my body (not exaggerating), lobsters, scampi, snails, mussels, clams, and creatures I did not even know existed. Once we got to our "fish guy" (friend of my colleague's) we went shopping for our dinner. We chose some razor clams, prawns, scampi, scallops, and a particular morose looking cod. Then we went to the restaurant and waited for dinner to be prepared. The restaurant doesn't have a menu, you just tell them how you'd like everything you just picked out prepared and they whip it up in the kitchen and then bring it out. While you wait; you are treated to a century egg - a true Hong Kong delicacy. It's basically a fermented egg that has been buried underground for a long time (too long). I ate a bite on a dare and it was not that bad, especially when paired with a ton of ginger. Would I order it again? Probably not.
Our previously selected sea critters were amazing though. Razor clams with spicy veggies, crunchy scampi fried up with so much garlic it made my nostrils burn, scallops in the shell- so fresh they still tasted a bit salty. The cod fared well with a vegetable stock sauced and bok choy- although it still wore a very sour expression. The prawns turned almost sweet after their time in the wok. I could not even tell you my favorite. I do know that I enjoyed this experience more than either of the Michelin starred restaurants I ate it in Hong Kong. The market was such a fun and local experience and I have never had that fresh of seafood. A must do if you have a local guiding you. read more
