Tao Heung Training Restaurant
Wai Y.

Food (**** out of *****); 80% of the time, they serve good food equal to any Hong Kong restaurant that has been in business for many years. 10% of the time, they will serve you something that is so divinely delicious and special that it will blow you away. 10% of the time, they will serve you something improperly made. Just remember that it is a "training" restaurant, smile, and send it back to the kitchen if this happens so that the budding new chefs will have a learning experience. One time, I had a fish dish here that was truly divine. All the diners in my party talk about it every time we go back. We ask the waiters every time if they're going to serve that fish again, but they always tell us, "no, this is a training restaurant. We serve different dishes every time you come back and have no permanent menu because what we serve here is what is on the curriculum at the time you are here." That fish was perfectly cooked. It was not overcooked so that the flesh was hard. It was fully cooked, not raw, yet, the flesh was still soft and moist. It was not overseasoned so that it was too salty. It was not underseasoned so as to be flavorless. It tasted like we were dining on a a soft, flavorful piece of the ocean. It was so good and fresh, it did not taste like fish at all. The chef even skillfully removed every piece of bone from a hard to debone species of fish, too. This should take a long time to do, but if you do take a long time, then the fish will have a fishy smell because fish spoils very quickly at room temperature. This means that the chef skillfully deboned that bony species of fish with great speed and precision. That fish showcased the chef's skill and totally stunned everybody at my table. However, yesterday, they served me a raw lobster. Remember, they're cooking school students. I just smiled, and politely send it back to the kitchen. Then, whoever cooked me that lobster, RECOOKED the same lobster instead of starting over. That is not good because you are not supposed to bring half eaten food back into the kitchen for sanitary reasons. Whichever cooking school student who cooked my lobster tonight should get an "F". Not good. Atmosphere (*** out of *****); On one hand they have a collection of Asian antiquities and the place is really tastefully decorated. On the other hand nobody is ever given any napkins to use. I have to bring my own napkins to wipe my lips. Really? Service (***** out of *****); I come here all the time, so everyone knows me here. All the wait staff are super friendly and helpful. If you're confused about what to order, just ask the waitresses what they recommend. They will never tell you anything is bad, but they will always tell you if anything is really good. Conclusion (***** out of *****); The tally is 4 stars, BUT I gave them an extra star for value. The prices here are super low because it is a "training restaurant" in a kinda industrial and lower rent area of town. Because it is in a lower rent area of town, do not order any luxury foods. For example, the lobster I ordered was on "special" sale. After I was served the lobster I understood why it was on "special" sale. Since it is in a lower rent neighborhood, nobody could afford the super big lobster I bought. This means that it has been sitting in the aquarium for a long time. It had a gigantic shell with very little meat inside. The weight of the lobster was 90% shell. As long as you do not order any luxury foods here, you will have fun dining on high quality food prepared skillfully while paying very little money. Two thumbs up ;-) P.S. They only take diners who have made reservations. Please call ahead of time to place a reservation before going there.

Came here for brunch as it was near our hotel…read more We came 15 mins after opening and were seated quickly. They gave us a booklet along with the paper to fill out, and most of the dim sum was the classic dim sum that I'm accustomed to. Their chiu chou fun gor was alright for me. They did put a good amount of peanuts in here but the exterior was a bit heavier on the dough side. Their siu mai and har gow were pretty good. Their cheung fun wasn't the silky light type, so I was just alright with it. Their Chicken with Sticky Rice wraped in Lotus Leaf was huge though, way bigger than those in Los Angeles. Their fresh mango custard roll was my highlight though, as they had chunks of mango in the middle and it was sweet. Would try this again. I think the one other aspect of this place is the interior is really clean, and they have a decent amount of tables inside. Service is a bit more attentive as the area isn't as large. I was most certainly full upon completion of this meal though haha.

Mark your order down on the sheet and go to the register to pay and turn in your order. Prices seemed to be slightly on the higher side at a first glance, but our final check ended up being pretty affordable. We tried their har gow, siu mai, baked BBQ pork buns, shrimp rice rolls, deep fried pork dumplings, and deep fried shrimp wonton. Food came out fast and I was pretty happy with all the items we ordered. Overall, decent spot for dim sum but I'd probably only come back if the wait wasn't too long.

It is by far the best place for dim sum. It offered different types of dim sum that other places no longer offer, such as the cotton chicken and 雞扎。 This location is prominent, and the ambiance is bright, and you feel welcome.

I believe the restaurant previously had a location in the mall, but recently moved to this new space. The restaurant decor is very elegant. The dining rooms in Hong Kong at dim sum establishments are on a different level compared with their counterparts in North America. The attire of some of the clientele does not match the setting however. You could dine here in casual clothing and not feel out of place. I came here with my aunt on a Sunday morning. She mentioned that you have to come here early to grab a table. We did do that, but the wait was quite lengthy even though the restaurant is large. I think there were 40-50 numbers called before ours. Though at least you get your own table here, even if there is a 10% service charge. There are some dim sum places in HK where you are sharing space with others. Usually at this kind of dim sum restaurant, you expect the dim sum to be made to order where you order from a menu. In the case of Maxim's, they actually offer push cart dim sum. I was apprehensive at first since I perceive push cart dim sum to be not as good as made to order dim sum fresh from the kitchen. But the fare here easily is the best push cart dim sum that I have had. It debunked my misconception. The standout for me would be the congee with pumpkin and crabmeat. The pumpkin adds a nice sweet flavor to this dish. All of the other items were great too including the fish maw and beef balls with shiitake mushrooms. I did even try out fish heads. Usually that would weird me out, but I decided to give them a try and I enjoyed them. There were a lot of bones, but the fishmeat was tender. I did also like the accompaniment of chili peppers and tangy sauce. If you are looking for a great dim sum spot in Sha Tin, Maxim's Palace is an excellent spot. The push cart dim setup does not diminish its quality. Though be prepared for a lengthy wait for a table.

Like many restaurants that have long waits, you either check in with hostess or kiosk to get a ticket and wait for a table. We waited 20 minutes and then were seated. They have pushcarts with the dishes and signs in English and Chinese which is awesome! The dishes were very good and got to try some new ones you don't see in the states. The service on the other hand is another story. My BIL ordered a few dishes on the app and we waited and waited. The problem with the app is it doesn't confirm it went through. Then we flagged down a server and placed an order and waited some more. Then after we flagged another server and told them we were ready for the check and we didn't want the dishes anymore they came out. It is a nice spacious restaurant.

And while the sautéed chicken was flavorful, everything else was just...fine. Not terrible, but also far from memorable. Every dish seemed to need a bit more seasoning, and a lot more flavor. All in all, I'd recommend skipping this in favor of something else in the mall.
