The shop itself is pretty small, but there was plenty of seating. The prices are average about $40 hkd/per dish. The dessert came out relatively fast we didn't have to wait too long. The dessert shop is right outside the Po Lam MTR station which is pretty convenient and I think it's a plus that they open late just so I could satisfy any late night cravings :) We ordered four items: a matcha shaved ice, a traditional taro and sweet potato dessert, a mango souffle, and a boba, coconut milk, mochi mixture. I personally thought the desserts were pretty mediocre and nothing really stood out to me.. The shaved ice was a bit bitter because of the matcha, but I guess that shows that they use actual matcha powder instead of flavoring. The sweet potato dessert was super gingery so if you're someone who doesn't really like ginger you should beware. The coconut milk dessert was too coconuty for my preference and lastly, the souffle was just a souffle. Maybe my preference are different since I am from the states, but those were my overall views of Sugar Desserts.

Judging from the size of the omelette, it's made of at least 3-4 eggs. My small omelette was a little burnt, but it was stuffed with a big amount of sliced ham, and you could see the juice oozing out of the omelette. To wash it down of my system, I ordered one of my favorite go-to drinks at a Cha Chaan Teng - Iced lemon tea with less sweet and less ice. For those of you who have not tried an iced lemon tea at a Hong Kong style cafe, it is unlike the canned iced tea that you get where the taste of lemon and tea is overshadowed by the amount of syrup. The iced lemon tea in a typical Hong Kong style cafe is made of fresh lemon slices and brewed tea (and you could request the amount of syrup to be added). It's a refreshing drink. Overall, the service here is efficient and I definitely see that the decor and everything are nostalgic to a lot of people living in Hong Kong. They still write down the price of your order on a piece of paper off of a memo pad as your receipt which is the very old fashioned way of taking an order at a Hong Kong style cafe. Indeed, why would they not? Whether it is the street food found in street markets or proper meals such as beef noodles or taiwanese bento, Taiwan has it all. Having said that I have a secret rule of thumb when it comes to food, that is, I will never eat Taiwanese food in Hong Kong and the same applies to the Hong Kong food in Taiwan. It might be a preconception on mine that the authenticity would very much be lost when the cuisine is introduced to a foreign piece of land; adding to that would be the fact that I have been let down for too many times and have gradually lose faith in it. It wasn't until I have come to this shop coincidentally that I gradually restore hope in Taiwanese cuisines in Hong Kong. I think the best way to tell whether a restaurant is good or not is to try out the basics; beef noodle soup is a staple of Taiwan and it would very well be a good indicator in how well a restaurant prepare their foods. The broth is quintessential in a bowl of noodles and 程班長 does it like no others. Traditional taiwanese beef noodle broth is rich and seasoned with soy sauce, behind the mellow fullness a punch of heat will catch you by surprise, and this is exactly how the broth is like in 程班長; going against the slightly broad and substantial noddles, the two matches perfectly. Whereas for the priced jewel, the meats, which could either be brisket, tendon or tripe or all 3 of them, are all very well braised and are melt in your mouth tender. Last but not least, the pickles that add to the noodle soup play an important role in spicing up the flavors as well as freshen up the mouthful. Thank to this restaurant, may be it is not a bad idea to give a little try on taiwanese restaurants in Hong Kong; a leap of faith is indeed called for nonetheless.
