Just the other day I was thinking, Thai is a popular cuisine why doesn't Mui Wo have a restaurant?…read moreWell... they do, hidden down a short, wide alley along Mui Wo Ferry Pier Road. After living here for a week I only spotted it the other day. Needless to say I made it my duty to give it a try. I ask that you take this review with a pinch of salt. The day before visiting Nitaya's Kitchen I arrived back in Hong Kong from Phuket, Thailand. From the outside the place doesn't look like much. A small table holds a couple menus and a cheap looking banner shows images of their menu. All that being said I was pleasantly surprised with my experience here. During lunch they have close to ten different lunch sets, meat and rice mainly, and none above $50 - my kind of place! Each meal comes with a drink, and as was my usual I ordered the Ice-lemon tea. To eat I went for a green curry while my lovely girlfriend chose the Pad Thai. The drinks arrived first, not at all what I was expecting. Perhaps it was my accent, or my poor cantonese but I was given something that looked and tasted like a combination between iced milk and lemon tea. Not great. But then the food arrived. The green curry was full of flavor, spicy and filling yet it was the pad thai that truly impressed, and like I said I just got back from Phuket! I tried, in vain, to convince my girlfriend that she really wanted the curry and really wanted to give me the pad thai. Luckily for me she said we could go 50/50. It's not that the green curry was bad, not at all, it's just that the pad thai was that good! It came with a generous helping of shrimps, which in most cheaper lunch sets restaurants usually tend to be stingy with, and the portion size was on the bigger side. I Sprinkled some peanut shavings and the pad thai was complete. I'm sure I'll be back at Nitaya's Thai Kitchen, and not only because of the prices!

I really enjoyed the ambiance and décor of the place. The bright red painted walls, cool-funky lighting and cushy seating along the walls just made it a calm and serene spot to enjoy dinner. As for the food, I give props to our waiter/kitchen for accommodating our request for 4 spring rolls when the order said 3. -Spring Rolls ($48): Much bigger than anticipated, nicely stuffed and loved the chili dipping sauce -Stir Fried Eggplant with Minced Pork and Basil ($68) Enjoyed the flavor of the pork along with the eggplant, cooked well and overall filling -Yellow Curry Mixed Vegetarian ($98) Also good, probably have had better curry but it was still good. Overall, we were impressed with the service, cleanliness, politeness, very reasonable prices and the food was good, not raving, but good. What we weren't impressed with was the adult beverages. Sadly, neither hubby or myself were pleased with what we ordered to drink. His was an Old Fashioned. I do not recommend. It came to the table looking like lemonade. Sorry, but we were like...what is that? After he tasted it, he made me taste it and I was laughing. Yikes! I went with their Cabernet Sauvignon and I'm no wine snob, well, okay maybe the first glass I am but after that...This tasted more like a 5th glass, boxed, probably $2 buck chuck tastes better than this. Thankfully, we have our watering hole next door so next time we come we'll do food, just skip the beverages!

I started off with their Tom Yum soup and boy was it amazing. Some places tend to serve it too creamy, too spicy or too sour/tart but this places does Tom Yum soup proud with the perfect mixture of harmony. I don't personally usually order Tom Yum soup at Thai places because how easy it is to screw it but my Aunt personally recommended that it's good here and I'm so glad I got to try it. Highly recommended. Next came something I never had before, it was raw shrimp served dressed with some chili and garlic slices. Also to accompany the shrimp was a spicy sauce which looked to have some vinegar, cilantro, green onions, chili peppers, and other spices. It had a nice clean kick to it. Next was the pork shanks simmered in what looked to be five spiced broth with Chinese broccoli. The pork was very tender and full of flavor. Definitely worth trying here. On came the skewers, we got beef, chicken, and pork. This was pretty decent but the meats could have been more tender. Out of the three, the pork skewer tasted the best as it had more meat flavor compared to the others. Next came some garlic bread which was good but what made it stand out was the curry that you had to dip with it. Amazing curry! It was a little sweet and reminded me of Malay curry. Then came a whole perfectly cooked chicken. It was so fresh and tender. It was so good that I ate the bulk of it! The white meat could almost be confused with the dark meat in a blind taste test. That's how good it was! Next came the Egg Plant but I'm usually not a fan of Eggplant but they enjoyed it. Then because my Aunt knows the owner, we got a special off the menu item which was a Pumpkin Prawn curry with noodles (yee mein). One of my favorite kind of asian noodles. It went so well with the curry. Definitely recommend ordering it if you can haha. Next to lighten up the already huge amount of food we ordered for 4 people lol, we got a salad with consisted of little Pomelo pulps, cashews, small dried shrimp, chili peppers, green onion, and baby shrimps. If you want great prices and legit authentic Thai food. This has got to be one the places but it's quite a drive outside the city but totally worth the drive!

Came here for Saturday lunch in a party of 6. Interesting to see Hainan Chicken at a Thai restaurant as this wasn't common in America. The chicken was tender and juicy. The sauce was different from HK style ones, but this was my favorite dish here. I'd give it 4 stars. The duck and pork leg had some good tasting pieces, but felt that something was lacking in this dish that I couldn't quite pinpoint - 2.5 stars. The steamed mullet took 30 minutes to come out when we almost finished the meal. Fish still tasted great - 3 stars. Minced pork with fried egg and rice: I'm a sucker with meat and rice. The taste was good and it's hard to go wrong with an egg - 3.5 stars. Tom Yum Kung with seafood had a rich base soup. Several pieces of shrimp. I added it to my Hainan rice which provided more flavor - 3.5 stars. Fried cabbage sprouts Malaysian style - I've always liked this spicy Malaysian style. The only vegetable dish we had and it was quite tasty - 4 stars. Had the half-and-half coffee and milk tea. I was expecting a stronger flavor as this tasted a bit weak - 2.5 stars. Even with airline staff prices, the meal was not cheap. Given this was at the airport, I understand the markup. If the prices were cheaper, I think this place would be worthwhile.

For the appetizer we chose the spring roll (4x pcs) and fish cake (4x 1/2 pcs) which were good. Next came the tom yum soup which was mei as they put coconut milk into it. For the vegetables, we ordered the stir-fried baby cabbage sprouts with shrimp paste. Lastly came the pad Thai which was just ok, as it needed more tamarind juice. For the drinks, we ordered the ice coconut milk with jelly.

While I may have forgotten to "check-in" while I was just there for lunch, please excuse my manners…read moreand pardon this hungry girl by letting her make up for it by putting her review out there before she forgets that part too! Having eaten next door several times, I finally grabbed one of my friends to go and check this place out. I haven't had Thai food for a while, so I definitely was ready for it! Arriving two minutes after twelve o'clock noon there were already customers seated inside the small restaurant. Immediately we were greeted and seated at a small table for two. The menu offers a decent array of Thai appetizers, seafood, rice, soups, curries, vegetables, noodles dishes and specials. Apparently, they also offer a set lunch, but we weren't offered it?? I only saw a glimpse of a 1 page menu separate from the standard menu at the table next to ours! No worries but I'm still curious as what was offered since "set lunches" are often a better deal. Our appetizer of Laap (minced meat in lettuce) we chose chicken (other choices were beef or pork). While it was good, I think I would pick pork next time because I really enjoyed it in our rice dish. The meat was crumbled well and the array of sauces really gave it a nice kick depending how much and what your preference is. The Phad or Pad Thai was also good. I'm not sure it blew my socks off but it was good and I had no problem making a pig out of myself, plus I'm a Pad Thai lover. As for the rice, I was more "iffy" about but surprisingly was my favorite dish. Again, your choice of meat, this one we went with the pork. It really complemented the flavors in the rice so well! Very tasty and highly recommend. We were too stuffed for any dessert, but they do offer a couple of Thai specialties. There's a main dining room and a smaller room behind it along with the cash register. While I only saw one lady taking all the orders, don't expect super quick service...there's only one of her! Dinner time might be different? A couple of "small" reminders or prompts and she was all over it, I think I'm getting use to the service/no service concept in HK so overall I can't complain...just be sure you know an automatic 10% will be applied regardless! Ha! So in the end, Like I said before...TC doesn't have a lot of good places to eat, so I can't cry and be picky but I'd definitely try this place again and some different dishes! I'd rate it as a 3.5 but will round up to a 4 for this one. Location: 3/5 (not close to City Gate) Service: 3/5 Food: 4/5 Value: 3+/5
