a la carte menu
Celine L.

Sohofama is the little sister of Locofama, both selling organic food under Goods Of Desires (GOD). It is somewhat buried behind G.O.D. with no signs outside yet, however you can enter through the back of PMQ to their patio area. The outside patio area was empty on a Sunday evening but is charmingly decorated with home-grown plants with bringing a country feel, and is known as their urban garden. Definitely lovely for an afternoon brunch/tea. We sat down in a booth indoor. It is suitable for groups, with 2 long tables sitting maybe 10 and a couple other 4-people booths. I'd say it fits about 30ish inside. Water was served with refreshing squeezed lemon. They have a simple menu and they also offer a tasting menu for $480 per person (They remove 2 dishes if there's only 2 diners) But we opted for a la carte. They don't have their alcohol license yet so only mocktails are served. There's no prices on them but they're a rather steep $70. The LEMON MINT MARIGOLD had a hint of lemon grass and mint/soda, a reminiscent of a mojito (less minty, more lemony), the FRANGIPANI GREEN TEA tasted more like a sour light green tea (kind of similar to the one starbucks offered for a while). Both are refreshing but overpriced. The star dish was the ORGANIC SPANISH BELOTTA PLUMA PORK WITH GARLICK DIPPING SAUCE $248, It came with 7 pieces (a bit pricey for its portion) The meat however, was very tender and a little pink in the center. The butter/herb/garlic mix added to the richness. Definitely pair with RICE $18 for this as it can get a little salty. The DRUNKEN FREE RANGE CHICKEN $98 had a stronger chinese wine aroma than Crystal Jade's but the free range chicken was a tad dry. Portions are similar to Crystal Jade's which runs around $78. It is topped with wolfberries and on a thin bed of cucumbers. The STIR FRIED GREEN BEANS WITH MINCED PORK $98 was a bit expensive for what it is. Nothing really special, Again, I can get the same dish at Crystal Jade for about $60? Since we weren't full yet, we added an order of STIR FRIED PORK TENDORLOIN WITH CHILI AND HOUSEMADE PANCAKE WRAP $168. To be honest, it wasn't anything too special from your typical Chinese dish. The pancake may be a TAD thin and easily ripped when folded. But I'd much rather it be thin than thick. The price was somewhat reasonable though. Complimentary glutinous rice balls were provided, THey kind of reminded me of the nutella balls I had at Man Mo Cafe. *** Tips: Could try the xiao long bao, The ORGANIC SPANISH BELOTTA PLUMA PORK WITH GARLICK DIPPING SAUCE was a star although a little pricey. Order rice to make up for small portions. Favourites: ORGANIC SPANISH BELOTTA PLUMA PORK WITH GARLICK DIPPING SAUCE Meh: STIR FRIED GREEN BEANS WITH MINCED PORK and DRUNKEN CHICKEN were nothing special. Mocktails on the steep side. Overpriced Last words: The bill came out to be $870 after tip which is steep for what it is. I expected the bill to be around $500 max. I much prefer its sister restaurant LOCOFAMA for more unique and western flavours. I felt like I was eating at an overpriced (albeit higher quality) Crystal jade. But the price does not justify the jump in quality. Perhaps a larger portion on some of the items would alleviate this.

It ain't bad at all but on the pricey side. Now it's quite a different dining experience if you have to rush through door-in-door-out in 45 minutes (about to watch Avengers 2 later that night!). The staff were a bit oblivious about whether or not if they even had tables available for walk-in, but the manager played smart and offered a table to us anyway. Read through the food/drink menu definitely took us some time. The names of the cocktails were amazing, if you could read both Chinese and English, they guaranteed a few giggles. But again, you had to read the fine prints to really know if you were ordering a gin or a whisky or a traditional Chinese liquor mix (coz there's no way to tell from the name.) The names of the dishes were the same, but a bit of a hit or miss. Just like most of the ideas G.O.D. (the lifestyle store that owns Sohofama), about 75% would give you a good giggle, and the rest of the 25% would be either over the top, confusing, actual typo, or a mix of the above. Say while they were focusing on serving organic food, I was not sure if adding "organic" (有機) in front of most of the items were a genuine intention, or more a tongue-in-cheek. Anyway, we ordered the drinks first, and then ordered ORGANIC xiao lung bao, black truffle spring rolls, Chinese creamed cabbage (奶油津白), and a XO sauce scallop fried rice. XLB were good, not my top 3, but definitely more decent than I expected in a "modern Chinese fusion" restaurant. black truffle spring rolls and Chinese creamed cabbage were both well made, but I found it hard to justify the price. Fried rice were a bit too dry, and as the traditional wisdom would tell you, you needed rice cooked overnight to make good fried rice, and apparently no actual restaurant would do it that way. But at least, food arrived in timely manner and at least one of the staff (+ the manager) did realize we were in a hurry. The 4 stars were given to the expedited service, the above average + above expectation food, but not for the price, nor the cheeky menu.

I totally agree with a previous reviewer, Celine's comments on Sohofama. To summarize, you can totally find the same dishes at other restaurants at a much lower price, except that the menu won't have the word "organic" on every item. Sohofama is definitely overpriced. I came here with a female friend. We ordered 4 dishes and 2 cocktails. The bill came out to be $1000 already. The 4 dishes were drunken free range chicken, slow cooked 48-hour beef short rib pancake slider, local group casserole and stir friend organic local green beans w/ organic minced pork. My cocktail was the smoked camomile. Again, don't get me wrong, the food was all good. I just think it's overpriced for having the name tag "organic" on every item but I didn't see anything special about the meat being more tender or have better quality. The cocktail was special but not strong enough and a bit too small for the price. Service at Sohofama was so-so... I was quite disappointed with their staff when we were seated at the high chair facing the wall at 7pm. We asked if we could sit at a regular table as we knew we were just gonna have a quick dinner and leave within 1.5 hours at 8:30pm. Without checking the bookings, the staff just declined and said it's full house. Guess what, when we left the restaurant before 9pm, there were still a few empty tables. I understand there may be some no-shows but at least they could check and offer us a limited time frame to sit at a regular table. I'd definitely expect a bit better service at a pricey restaurant.

It was date night and it was nearly the end of the month... Where do I take my girlfriend to eat somewhere nice, but not too expensive? Eatigo to the rescue! Sohofama luckily had 50% off their bill at 6.30pm so I rushed out of the office at 6pm to meet my partner for dinner. This was somewhere we had been meaning to check out every time we walked past it in Soho. It's attached to PMQ and opposite Little Bao. The outdoor seating is wonderfully intimate and dimly lit like you're in someone's garden patio enjoying an evening nightcap. The indoor seating is rustic and expansive with one room working as bar and two other rooms working as a restaurant. We ordered the sweet and sour pork, tiger prawns with spicy pomegranate, short rib sliders and the beef with quinoa. The first two were pretty standard to be honest - the flavor was not too overpowering and was nicely balanced. It did not taste overly heavy and we were able to finish both dishes without feeling too weighed down like one usually would after two classic dishes from a Chinese takeaway. Sohofama does market itself as a healthier, up market Chinese restaurant so it makes sense as to why we could indulge ourselves in this kind of food without feeling too guilty afterwards. The slider buns were soft and airy while the short rib was a little on the dry side. The meat did not fall apart as much as I had anticipated - after being slow cooked for 48 hours, I expected a little more. The quinoa comes with an egg on top whereby the yolk oozed out it's yellow goodness when pierced with a fork. Mixing it in with the quinoa added another layer of flavor and consistency and the beef helped to fill us up to just the right level. For the longest time, we never stepped into this restaurant due to the price - to pay HKD 170 for a medium sized bowl of rice and beef is just too much when you have a plethora of high quality local Chinese restaurants which can serve you a portion double the size, for half the price. But if you're part of the target audience which is the healthy eating, clean, no MSG crowd and you're feeling Chinese food with a bit of spare change (unlike myself the week before pay day), then this could be a good place to choose.

They know details of the certification levels and only stock quality in their shop. Frozen Organic meats, frozen sustainable wild caught seafood, fresh organic fruit and veggies (not just the boring veggies - they have that and a ton of things I've never seen before but taste amazing - Kevin will even suggest how to prepare/cook them), organic raw cultured butter and cheese, the most amazing organic dates in from Iran!! I'll stop now as I could rattle off soooo many things I am loving from these guys. They've got tons for the Paleo conscious and the gluten free crew...I don't really care (or agree for that matter) for the vegan lifestyle but I'm sure a the most picky vegan would be happy with the offerings on offer too. These guys have hunted and gathered from just about every corner of the world it seems!! I ordered the curry beef tendon soup with rice. I would much prefer to have it in the bread bowl but with being gluten-free that is not an option. My order came out and I couldn't wait to dig into my curry beef tendon. I started searching in the bowl with my spoon and discovered that there is a ton of tendon and only two pieces of beef. Where's my meat? The bread bowl arrived almost 10 minutes later served in aluminum foil and with plastic gloves. Plastic gloves? What is this a crawfish boil? The bread is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with beautiful chunks of beef cradled in the center. The yellow curry sauce is served in a bowl on the side. Since I finished well before my husband, I had the pleasure of watching him savor most of his meal. It now dawned on me what the plastic gloves were for; to prevent you from making a mess of your hands while dipping the warm bread in the yellow curry sauce. Good thing I had my handy, dandy wipes on me! The tomato soup was delicious. It's thin, water-like, but bursting with flavor. It tastes like juice from a delicious pot roast your grandmother would make infused with onion. Note: this is not vegetarian tomato soup and I'm pretty sure they used juice from the beef to make it.

I ordered the tenderloin to be medium rare, but it was honestly towards the raw side. Medium rare typically has a firm seared exterior with a juicy warm pink interior, but the meat was really chewy throughout and was almost impossible to cut because of the fact it wasn't cooked well. (I actually ended up getting food poisoning the next day because of how raw the food was which was baffling to me). The creamed spinach wasn't very creamy and more on the grainy side which threw off the texture of the dish. The baked potato was done well and I had no complaints there. The blue Monday was one of their 5 cocktails they had, but it honestly tasted like a giant shot of blue curaçao. It really wasn't representative of a cocktail at all and I had to send it back because it was so strong. Overall the food was definitely a 1/5 for a place of this stature. Service - the service was the best service I've ever had in a fine dining restaurant. The staff were accommodating and very attentive, and they even took out the cocktail I ordered because I didn't like it. The service is immaculate and even though I despise the food, the service is commendable. Ambjance - the ambiance is what you would expect of your typical fine dining restaurant, the view is nothing crazy but it has a nice upscale interior. Overall, I only gave this place a 2/5 because the service was wonderful, but as I'm not here for good service, I'm here to eat some damn good food which unfortunately doesn't exist at this restaurant. The quality of food is abysmal for a fine dining restaurant and it doesn't do justice for the steakhouse genre.

Like many veg restaurants in Hong Kong, their menu reads very alike a regular restaurant, substituting any meat ingredient with a veg version. So, you get salmon, tuna, soft shelled crab, chicken, abalone, and many other things that don't sound vegetarian. When my salmon rose roll came in, I looked and looked. Even on close examination, it looks like the real thing, from the color to the texture to the white lines of fat. An amazing feat of food processing technology. So does it taste like the real thing? I always maintain that people who says that when a vegan says that the vegan cheese/ham/sausage tastes like the real thing, it's just because she has forgotten what the real thing tastes like. Short answer, no, it doesn't taste like the real thing, but it is not unpleasant either. Unlike some cardboard-like vegan, gluten free stuff that is barely palatable. I would order it again, but probably just as plain nigiri. The roll has too much mayo, and the truffle do not add much to taste. Soft shell crab is made by frying rolled up seaweed in tempura batter, which I prefer as it's more natural. They have other more traditional Chinese vegetarian dishes too, if veg sushi is not your thing.

Let's face it, if you're looking for affordable Italian in the city, I'm sure there are plenty of more desirable options. However, if you're looking for something special, perhaps a "wow" moment, this is the place for you. Awarded a Michelin Star, I expected the standards to be high and the restaurant did not disappoint. We were seated by the window with a stunning view of Victoria Harbor down below, which set the mood for an elegant fine dining experience. The nimble staff was quick yet not rushed and paced the entire meal very well. Unlike some other Michelin starred restaurants that force you into a single prefixe meal, they offered several options including smaller pre-fixe meals to cater to each individual's appetites and desires. I selected the four course pre fixe which included the carpaccio, cavatelli, main course, cheese plate, and dessert. I spotted gnocchi on the the menu and since it was my favorite pasta and it was indeed house made, i decided to share it with my dining guest. They made no fuss about it and kindly offered to split the dish for us. After ordering, I took the opportunity to scan the restaurant. The dimly lit environs were flanked by floor to ceiling glass windows which allowed the panoramic city skyline to be your backdrop. Grand chandeliers cascaded above the sleekly designed restaurant lending to an opulent yet modern dining space. The open kitchen made for a more interactive environment, which i liked very much. It was nice to see the chef and his staff at work. It was quite remarkable. As soon as my carpaccio arrived, I knew I was in for a treat. It was sublime and literally melted in my mouth. The gnocchi arrived soon after and boy was I in for a treat. They felt like soft pillows in my mouth with a burst of flavor inside each heavenly bite. Coupled with a delicious meat sauce, I was tempted to lick my plate. It was that good. Following the gnocchi was the main course, which was the branzino di lenza. This expertly prepared dish prompted the chef himself, Nicola Russo to present it to our table with a description of how the fish was prepared. It was stunning, and the flesh was like butter. It exhibited an extraordinary mouthfeel with subtle flavors that did not overpower but enhanced the natural flavors of this beautiful fish. A winning dish in my book. Following the main course, we were greeted by Julia, the assistant manager who presented us with the evening's cheese selections. Her presentation was both thorough and informative. In all honesty, they all sounded so enticing that I asked her to provide us with her favorites. She did just that and I had the opportunity to enjoy some wonderful cheeses before our desserts arrived. When dessert arrived, we were provided with three exceptional desserts: the panna cotta, Tiramisu and lemon tart. I can honestly say I've enjoyed all three before but it felt the like the first time experiencing them that night. Each had a unique flavor and preparation that made it feel special and brand new, which was not an easy feat. Most importantly, they were successful twists to classics that I know and love and I would kindly welcome seconds if I wasn't already so full. Overall, I had an exemplary experience. The contemporary dining space, stunning views, thoughtful service and beautiful food made me a fan. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a celebratory evening or just a special night. It's worth every penny. Happy Eats!
