Some of the best beef noodles you can get. It's a small bowl but really packed and filling.read more

You might even hear me say it's THE place for beef brisket noodles. Other (likely amateur) things tourists like me say: My favorites are the broth, flat noodles and on occasion, tendon. I think most people would go for the broth or curry. E-Fu noodles seem to be the most popular, often being sold out. Once they even sold out of broth. I'm lucky or an unpunctual eater or very late to the Kau Kee club as I've never waited in a line. Know that long queues have been said to be the welcome. The first time I visited was thanks to its Michelin recommended status. At the time of writing this review it has since been awarded the Bib Gourmand. The experience was quintessentially Asia. The two of us sardined on a table with a family of four who were either local or no stranger to the land and culture. Normally patrons respectfully dine quickly in silence and leave. This group was indeed quick with typical stoic expressions but also gifted us a smidge of their efforts when looking up from their bowls for the slightest seconds, pointing at their drinks: cokes with lemons, wordlessly suggesting we try some and gesturing their hands to show us how to. Lemon first on the ice, coke poured on. Of course we copied and it was the most extravagant part of our meal. ;)

Consistently on Michelin Bib Gourmand which means its an amazing meal for the price, I'm a huge fan…read moreof Mak's Noodles and Yat Lok since they are across the street from each other and awarded numerous Michelin accolades. The price is cheap and the flavors local yet slightly complex and interesting. I love coming here for a bite I know won't get me too full and give me a flavor of HK. They cook right at the steamy windows and each dish is made to order so its super fresh. Wonton Noodle Soup: It costs a whopping $6 US and the broth and wonton taste super traditional but well executed. They have the timing of the noodles down and they are always al dente and perfectly cooked. The broth has dried flounder giving it a deep umami flavor you will love!

On my wonton noodle tour, I decided to take myself to various well-known spots that pride…read morethemselves in making the best fresh shrimp wontons and springy noodles. I was excited to try Mak's for the very first time. Besides the quick and friendlier service, the space is well air conditioned and while cramped, the pros outweighs any of the cons. The signature wonton noodles were the best I have had and the quality really shows. Each bite of the shrimp wontons tasted crisp and fresh while the delicate wrapper held the full shrimp tightly and neatly. The shrimp itself was cooked to perfection and did not have any mushy texture nor overcooked chew. The noodles were as springy as ever and definitely tasted as much as they were worth. The broth was the clear winner whether or not you're the type to add some red vinegar or not. It is a broth with clear depth and flavor that does not overwhelm the tastebuds, nor send them to monosodium glutamate shock. It was such a great meal, I am already looking to enjoy another bowl sooner than later. And of course, for all the non-seafood lovers out there, the beef brisket noodles are just as worthy. Also, this spot serves free tea, no tea charge!

Hong Kong Cafes with a noodle focus almost always end up being my preferred places to chow down…read more Chui Hing (潮興魚蛋粉) is combines no nonsense service with killer food, along with affordable pricing and 24 hour availability to boot. The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The staff is really helpful and welcoming.

The prices are also very reasonable. I bought beef ball and wonton, wonton noodle soup. I didn't ask to have the noodles separate, but they still retained a good amount of chew by the time I got back up top the hotel. You can pay a little extra anywhere to ask them pack separate. The wontons are ok, beef balls are good, noodles are good, soup okay. The milk tea wasn't very strong but has a nice authentic back flavor. Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. Very good for takeout!

2.5 stars. My wife…read moreand I flew Cathay Pacific Airlines to Manila from LAX, with a short layover in Hong Kong. Thanks to our delayed flight, we got a free dinner voucher and stopped here for some beef noodle soup. While we were excited to try this in Hong Kong, the soup itself wasn't exactly earth-shattering. I've had better soups back home in the San Gabriel Valley. Chalk it up to being in an airport or maybe our palates weren't in the best shape after hours of flying, but this was a big ol' bowl of Meh. Good, not great; hot, filling, and totally forgettable. Pretty disappointing after eating airline food and expecting something more appetizing. There was something funny about our server when we presented our vouchers and I wished I'd read the Yelp reviews first. Apparently, the vouchers didn't cover our entire dinner or the bottled waters we ordered so I gave him extra money to cover the rest. No change was given back to me so I'm not sure if this was a "special" charge for tired travelers stopping by for a quick meal. I'd like to think that he wasn't taking advantage of our cultural differences and it was a simple miscommunication. I was too tired to care at that point, but you've been warned.
