I was referred to Dr. Sonthineni in Oct. 2012 for multiple neurological symptoms, I thought…read morepossibly MS. This doctor was on the referral list that my primary uses, so I had no reason to question her credentials. However, after 4 months of confusing communication of test results, ordering of sleep-related tests that were unrelated to my complaints, outright wrong statements about the source of some of my symptoms, poor handling of my reaction to a prescribed medication and generally feeling that I was not getting anywhere being treated by this doctor, I looked her up in healthgrades.com. I was shocked and disturbed to find out that she apparently is not a neurologist at all. Her board certification is in psychiatry, and her husband (who practices out of the same office but may not claim to be a neurologist) is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Apparently because they named their joint business Broome Neurosciences, it was automatically assumed that one of them was a qualified neurologist. What they really do there is brain wave testing, nerve response testing, and sleep studies, at least that's what they did with me. It does not appear to be a coincidence that everyone I know (3 plus myself) who has been referred to their office has been ordered to undergo multiple sleep studies and been told that they have sleep apnea. I don't have any of the symptoms except being tired in the morning, and that, I believe is because of my chronic (13 years) fibromyalgia pain. I couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep during my study due to extreme discomfort, itching, pain and frustration, yet they claimed that I slept 81% of the time and stopped breathing 16 times per hour. As a result, I don't believe anything she says to me, and I am looking for a REAL neurologist. Also, I have never been given anything on paper for any test results, and even my daughter, who is a nurse, was confused by the convoluted discussion of my symptoms and initial test results when she went with me for a followup appointment. She could not imagine how anyone with memory or other cognitive issues would ever know what their condition really was or whether the treatment/ medication prescribed was appropriate or helpful. I had a very strong sleepiness/ dizzyness reaction to gabapentin, which I reported to her office after a few days because I couldn't function. She insisted that I continue to take it because the side effects should wear off within a few weeks. I couldn't stay awake if I sat down, or drive safely, or walk without weaving and stumbling for a full month, yet she was reluctant to take me off the gabapentin before I had been on it for the full month. Then I could take nothing at all for the neuropathy pain and muscle issues for 6 weeks to clear the gabapentin from my system. By the time I could have had something else, I was so disgusted with the doctor, I wouldn't allow her to treat me anymore. So I wasted 4 months on inappropriate treatment by an unqualified doctor, and now it will be another 3-4 months before I can get in to see a qualified neurologist to start over. Needless to say, I am very angry that this kind of thing could even happen. You would think that the healthcare system would check the credentials and licensing of their participating physicians and give accurate referrals.

I have had 2 discectomies in the past so I am prone to neck problems. I was thrilled to get in to see Dr. Rodz because a Dr. had highly recommended him, plus he was rated so highly on different health websites. I also liked what he said on his website about pain encroaching on one's life and trying to reduce pain so one can function more fully again. However, the reality of seeing him was much different from the hype. My husband and I were at his office for 90 minutes and I was face-to-face with Dr. Rodz about 10-15 minutes. I have had numerous neurological exams by neurosurgeons but none were as cursory as the one he did. He asked me for feedback about what I felt when he did different tests but barely listened to what I said. After the 5 minute neurological exam, he said he would be back to talk to me about his findings. I should add he had a recent MRI and x-rays of mine to view. Our conversation post-exam was about 4-5 minutes. He said I have arthritis in my spine, which I already knew. However, he said nothing about my stenosis which had been revealed by the MRI. His "treatment" was that he was going to refer me to another group of Drs. in Syracuse, because they had a comprehensive program to help me. I asked him to explain what that meant by a comprehensive program, and again his response was very vague. I was expecting him perhaps to say they offer PT or pain specialists or the like. I asked him why couldn't he treat me and he said because he "didn't have the resources." This seemed absurd to me because this is quite different from what he advertizes on his website. I asked him why my pain had been accelerating in recent months, and he said he didn't know. Period. He did not offer any suggestions or possibilities, he just sat there and looked at me. I was so boggled I didn't know what to say. My husband asked him whether he thought the dose of my medication was adequate for my pain and he said "I don't know." He said he didn't want to get involved in prescribing dosages when there are a lot of Drs. involved. Right now the only other Dr. involved is my neurologist. I wasn't asking for a new medication, just his opinion. My husband and I felt like it was such a surreal experience; I have never been treated by a Dr. in such a manner. It felt like he did not want me to be his patient. I sincerely doubt that he didn't have ANY resources to help me with my problems but he did not offer any, even an opinion about my medication. I have no idea why he did not want to treat someone with arthritis in their neck that is worsening enough to interfere with work, leisure activities, driving, sitting and so on. Although he states on his web site he thinks about how much pain affects people and their functioning, he asked me NO questions about how well I was functioning in any of those areas. To my husband and me, it seemed he just wanted me out of his office. Unbeknownst to me until after my appointment, someone I know also had seen him and had a very similar reaction to his disregard for her waiting time and also lack of helpful information. Perhaps he has done well by other people, but the fact that he could treat even one patient in this manner says to me that he can be unpredictably unprofessional in his treatment. I would NEVER recommend him to anyone and I will certainly let the Dr. who referred him know about my experience.
