My visit to Cayuga Pain Management was troubling from the start. The front desk receptionist…read moreoffered a cold disingenuous greeting and vague directions--no effort to create a welcoming or clear experience. At the intake window, I expected better. Instead, the woman checking me in was eating at the desk and on what sounded like a personal call, repeatedly asking, "Who's going to be there?" while I stood waiting just a few feet away. It was only later that I realized she was also the LVN, not clerical staff. This was not an appropriate way to handle patient intake in a medical setting. During vitals, the LVN corrected me unnecessarily about how I described my spinal pain, focusing on semantics ("neck" vs. "spine") rather than listening. The interaction was cold, mechanical, and disengaged. After vitals, I waited in the exam room for more than 45 minutes with no update. The clinic was quiet, and I was likely one of the first patients. When I stepped out to ask, the LVN told me the doctor was "on her way." **In reality, Dr. Qi Zhang was already sitting a few feet away with her back to me, silently listening to the conversation. She allowed her staff to lie on her behalf--a deception she clearly didn't expect to be caught in, because she never turned around. It wasn't until I returned to the window and said I would be leaving that Dr. Zhang spun around and said, "I was just about to see you." I asked, "You're the doctor?" She then repeatedly said, "The decision is yours"--oddly, as if her title alone should override the clear deception I had just witnessed. They got caught in a lie. If she hadn't turned around, I wouldn't have known. It's clear Dr. Zhang assumed I was in enough pain that I'd overlook their behavior and proceed with care anyway. That's a deeply unethical position to put a patient in: to exploit discomfort and urgency in hopes that it will silence concern. It didn't. I left without being seen. If this is how they operate when someone's paying attention, what else happens when they're not? This clinic demonstrated poor communication, lack of transparency, and an erosion of trust. I would not recommend care with Dr. Qi Zhang or this practice.

However, the reception area, bathroom, and exam rooms are all grubby, which is just gross, especially for a doctor's office. My major complaint is that, in four visits, I have had the office staff argue with me all four times about how much I owe. I know what my co-pays are, since my insurance company prints the amount right on the card. But they kept telling me I was wrong. Some of this is my fault. I didn't want to go into my appointment angry and was afraid if I made a fuss, I wouldn't get treated. Also, I could not actually see the faint ink and dinky numbers on the credit card slips, so just trusted they had rung it up as they said when I signed. They hadn't. The latest one was the most bold. My co-pays are even dollar amounts. They rung it up as $88.84! When I saw that, I got a statement from the bank for all four charges and figured out they owe me a little over $50! I'm thinking either someone is incompetent or, dare I say it, skimming? I just sent them a print out of the actual charges, correct charges, and amount they owe me. I'm DONE being compliant. I will be paying with a check from now on and will have a copy of the print out in my purse. If they give me any crap, I'll make a stink and demand Dr. Ortiz deal with the issue personally. BTW, I mailed the print out to the address listed on this site. It came back. It's not in Freeville, but in Dryden.

This is about my care by Dr. Schaeffer at the Camillus Surgery Center…read more After waking up in debilitating pain, my primary care doctor referred me to Dr. Schaeffer. I was able to get in to see him quickly and he did an evaluation and prescribed me medication which relieved my pain by the next day. I have had 3 appointments with him since and he and his staff have always been excellent with their treatment of me. I highly recommend him as a kind and caring doctor. Vincent Larkin, Syracuse, NY

I am deeply disappointed with the care and compassion shown during my experience at this practice…read more I saw Kristen, NP in the Camillus office. She was dismissive, unprofessional, and unwilling to listen to my concerns regarding further steps for pain management. During my appointment, I was in significant pain and became visibly upset and started to cry. Asking for alternative options to help manage my symptoms because the current treatment plan was not working /not being accepted through my insurance company. Rather than taking the time to listen, discuss possible alternatives, or show any empathy, my concerns were brushed aside. I felt like I was inconvenience, rather than having legitimate medical concerns. What was most upsetting was feeling completely unheard. As someone who has worked as a nurse for more than 30 years, I understand that healthcare providers cannot always give patients the answers they want. However, patients deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. I repeatedly asked for guidance and other possible options, but no meaningful discussion took place. The only pain management option that was offered to me was opioid medication. When I explained that I did not want to take opioid painkillers and asked about alternative approaches, the Kristen appeared frustrated and upset with me rather than engaging in a constructive discussion about other possible treatments, and stated that she felt that my frustration was a personal attack on her. When I stated multiple times it was not, that I was upset and disheartened on the medical system as a whole. This left me feeling even more dismissed and unsupported during an already difficult situation. After the appointment, my daughter called the office to discuss what had happened and to seek further clarification regarding my concerns. During that conversation, she was told that I had been rude, dismissive, disrespectful, and mean to all of the staff members. That characterization is completely false and does not reflect what occurred during my appointment. While I was emotional because of the severe pain I was experiencing, I did not treat the staff in the manner described. Being accused of behavior that did not occur only added to the distress and frustration caused by this experience. I left the appointment feeling defeated, hopeless, and abandoned by a healthcare system that is supposed to help people when they are most vulnerable. No patient should leave a medical office in tears feeling as though their pain and concerns do not matter. Professionalism, empathy, and communication are essential parts of patient care. Unfortunately, my experience reflected a serious lack of all three. I hope this practice takes patient feedback seriously and works to improve how patients are treated, especially those who are struggling

If you have not yet experienced an osteopathic treatment you are definitely missing out on a huge modality for pain relief, among other issues. If you're not familiar with osteopathic medicine, the first thing you should know is that a D.O. has the same education as an M.D., and then some. From "prospectivedoctor.com": "DOs stress a holistic approach to medicine, which looks at the whole person rather than as a collection of organ systems and body parts that may become injured or diseased. This does not mean MDs do not look at the whole person, rather MDs are traditionally known to take more of a problem-based or disease-based approach. The DO holistic approach also emphasizes integrating patients into the health care process as a partner. DOs value constant communication and follow-up with their patients. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) states that DOs "consider the impact that lifestyle and community have on the health of each individual, and they work to break down barriers to good health." This philosophy is one key reason why many DO medical students choose to practice primary care."
