It was clear from the moment that we arrived that just about everything had changed; the staff, the management, the ambiance, and most of all the menu. Gone was the Sardinian family, the raffish atmoshere, and the extensive and superb seafood menu. Through the gracious staff tried to accommodate us, and assure us that the now weighty menu would satisfy, and indeed some dishes were quite delicious, especially the Insalata di Mare and the Spaghetti alla Vernaccia. The Rombo con Patate of last year (see photo) was nothing short of a disaster. I will not describe it further. We left the plate, got our bill and took our car back to our hotel. But they were not as crazily busy as now. I guess after Covid they were still not fully recovered. Keep in mind that they are right in the Colosseum area, so definitely touristy area, which you would like to avoid if you are looking for great food. But we remembered how good the food was few years back, so we decided to give it a try .This time - OMG- they are so super busy, to the point that poor waiters are literally running. And it makes a huge impact on food unfortunately. It was just ok. I ordered a seafood risotto , which was overcooked ((( and so creasy . The wine tasted watered down. Very disappointing. Not coming back(((

Daniel brought us an appetizer sampler with buffalo mozzarella, meats, other cheeses and burratta. OMG was it good. For our entree's I had the spaghetti (the homemade pasta was a perfect al dente) with meat sauce and meatballs was delicious. My wife had the special, branzino. It was perfectly cooked flaky and sooo... tender! My boys ate the Ravioli and carbonara. They loved their dishes (I ate off of all of their plates and can attest to the quality of their food), but better then that they loved our server Daniel and how he called them out when they tried to order something that he thought was a typical "American" dish and pushed them to try something they couldn't get in the USA. With that being said we went back again tonight and my boys were both hoping Daniel was working and he was. He took amazing care of us again. If you go the lasagna is amazing! One of my boys had the margarita pizza he ate every piece and loved it. This restaurant and the service is 10 stars. I highly recommend you go. Every waiter, manager and staff are the friendliest people you will ever meet and the food is fantastic.

It is a large restaurant and was full of lively patrons. The indoor decor is warm and inviting. The first thing I noticed was the camaraderie between the waitstaff - everyone seemed to get along, helped each other and were having fun. We had 2 wonderful Filipino waiters. One had the same Ray-Ban meta glasses as my husband, which they bonded over. We ordered the bombolotti carbonara and lasagna-both delicious. For the mains, grilled Turbot (which was perfectly de-boned tableside) and meatballs w/ mashed potatoes. While the waiter was de-boning the fish, the song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver came on overhead. My husband and I both looked at each other and smiled, thinking WTH?! I asked the waiter, "did we tell you we were from West Virginia?" and he smiled and shook his head. But later confessed, he played it for us (I guess we did tell him, lol). It made our night. Rome was the last city in our multi-city 12 day tour and we loved every minute but we were looking forward to going home. Hearing "Country Roads" at a popular and busy restaurant a block away from the Spanish Steps blew our minds. A young couple sat next to us for a quick snack, I asked her what she ordered (it looked delicious) and she said "Im from a different part of Italy but come here just for their artichokes". A few minutes later, I saw a plate full of artichokes pass by, being brought to a table outside. They made my mouth water. Al 34 was one of our favorite restaurants in Italy -- wonderful food (extensive menu), very lively with a mixed crowd (lots of Asians, English speakers and native Italians). It is a fun place to go and the wait staff is one of the reasons I will be coming back. I cant wait to try their artichokes! If you see the word, carciofo (artichoke), order it!

Crab pasta had minimal crab, you crack yourself and was not well prepared. Pasta was brought out cold. The seabass tortelli was truly awful. Poorly cooked pasta and seabass did not taste fresh. The thing that truly ruined it was they brought out a basket of bread at the start (we never asked for it, they just gave it, so we assumed it was complementary??) then later in the night they brought out a second basket of bread, again, unprompted. Seeing both on the bill was baffling. So many places around had given complementary small dishes or limoncello, which is why we hadn't said anything when they brought the bread, and we only had one bite of the second basket. Felt like a fake out at the end.
