My husband and I came here along with his family and three little nieces on a weekday in November, and we had a fun little time! The price was about $20 per adult, and masks were required in designated areas. We were lucky enough to walk through the park rather than drive through it, and I definitely think this option provides the better experience. The park itself has cocoa and souvenirs available for purchase, and you can expect to spend about an hour or more here if you don't linger too long. The actual lights are very impressive and scattered throughout the park. In the center of the park, there's also some Christmas light dancing which reminded me a bit of the Bellagio water fountain dances. Everyone was pretty entertained the whole time, and the kids didn't seem to lose any interest within that first hour at least! Feeling a bit like you'd like to see some Christmas lights but in a very different way than you've likely seen before? Then head on over to Zoolights at the Phoenix Zoo as we have for many of the last several years. It is truly impressive to see so many parts of the zoo fluttering with millions of lights. For the most part, the event just keeps getting better, even if the admission prices are a bit high and fewer discounts are available than I recall from previous years. Chalk part of that up to the recession we are about to head into, I guess, but this is a once-a-year event that is truly impressive, and so I recommend scraping up some money and putting on your walking shoes to enjoy the run of the place. In addition to blocks upon blocks of walk-through paths lined with lights outlining the shapes of animal after animal (as well as many holiday items, like gingerbread men, etc.), the lake area features a music and light show that repeats every so often throughout the night. It's frequent enough that you're not likely to miss it. Artificial snow is pumped on to some of the paths once the show is over. The food and drink is pricey, but the new restaurant there seems to be a great addition. Since we didn't eat there, we can't personally vouch for it, but a large counter-service restaurant like that seems to have been sorely needed. We did, however, buy a couple of marked-up coffee drinks at the coffee stand (which sells Starbucks), and they were decent enough for strolling around the grounds. If you go to Zoolights, we recommend getting there about 15 minutes before opening time on most nights so that you have plenty of time to stroll throughout the evening and avoid the coldest temperatures. And as crowded as it might seem when you first go in, it only gets more crowded over the next three hours. That said, it never seemed so crowded to us to make it difficult to get around. All in all, if you are into lights during the holiday season, give this event a try and see if you want to make it a must-do for your home each year or even as a Christmastime date night. We're very glad the zoo puts such effort into this very festive event. read more

This was the first time I had heard of Zoolights, even though apparently we have this here in California, too. I'm glad I was able to experience it for the first time on a cool Arizona evening, surrounded by excellent company, with an adult hot chocolate in hand. What a perfect way to spend an evening, whether with friends or on a date. My bestie does this every year, and when she brought it up as a possibility on our full vacation docket, I jumped at the chance. Zoolights takes place in December after dark, so the whole lights thing can be viewed properly. It's important to remember that animals sleep at night, and though the entire Phoenix Zoo is beautifully lit up with multicolored lights for the Holiday Season, it is still too dark to see many of the nocturnal friends during this time. It was lovely to see so many creatures made out of lights, though, so when I said the real life critters may be asleep, these luminescent versions are very much "awake." Not only do they have every animal imaginable on display (my favorite, the dolphin, and her fave, the otter, were easily found), but some of our favorite Christmas friends were also hanging out, such as Rudolph and the Bumble. I'm going to have a to make a point to come back to the zoo during the day so I can see it in a different kind of majesty, because it is expansive and there are so many enclosures to explore! I appreciated the massive size of the parking lot too, even though we were all lucky enough to have our DD and this wasn't an immediate worry on my mind. Adult beverages are available for purchase, including the kind that warms the soul on a winter night. Prices weren't terribly expensive at the venue. There are also snacks available such as caramel corn and hot dogs. Most of the food vendors and the gift shop are open for business during Zoolights time. Yet another awesome thing to partake of in Phoenix! I would definitely recommend stopping here if you hit Arizona during the holidays. read more

I'm a sucker for holiday lights, so going to Zoolights for our first Phoenix Christmas was a no-brained. The event is crowded, even on a random Thursday night, so bring your patience, but also bring your childlike love of sparkling lights and fun displays. I especially was charmed by the various animal displays (monkeys in the trees!). The interior lake had a lovely show set to festive music. It is worth stopping to watch. Be prepared, though - this is a light event, not a zoo event. None of the animal displays were open aside from a pen of reindeer. Still, it was fun to wander the grounds and see the fun designs cooked up. Santa was present, and there were snacks and hot cocoas throughout the grounds. And despite the crowd, parking and the entrance were surprisingly smooth. This is a holiday tradition worth revisiting. read more

What a wonderful surprise! We have been to other Christmas light venues, Phoenix zoo lights was a delight! We took the drive thru cruise lights, for COVID safety purposes. It was around $75 for the late night cruise ticket, at 9:30 pm in the night. Every employee was wearing a mask and you are required to wear a mask in the car, which made me feel much safer. You don't event have to lower the windows to scan the ticket! Just put it against the window and they scan the bar code... protects the hardworking employees as well as us. The directions were every easy to follow, there were volunteers guiding the whole way from the parking lot to the entrance. There was a steady pace, so did not feel like we were rushing through or holding traffic. The lights are very different at every part, so did not feel like it was the same everywhere! They have put in so much effort to bring Christmas cheer to every corner of the zoo and you can see the efforts! Do not miss this! My friend and I saw everything in 30 minutes. There wasn't much to see - not for adults or even kids really. I feel less bad about going bc I went on a value day and bought and printed $12 tickets, but it was still overpriced. I can't imagine going on a regular day and paying close to $20. Yikes! I get it, it was the week before Christmas the workers were tired and overworked I'm sure but all of them were rude. Every worker we ran into from the parking lot, through the park and at the end we're rude. The place was crowded which is understandable but so unorganized. The reps constantly yelled at people to get away or get back in line. The line to get in took forever because they had a few ladies checking people in. Zoolights is just cool. They really do a great job. It has changed from previous years due to Covid, so I would recommend calling ahead before going. Some nights are drive through (only) and other nights are the walk through tour, which is a much better experience. Going during the week isn't near as busy as the weekend which can get packed at times. Kids will love the lights, music and get a lot of walking in which is not only great exercise, but they'll be tired when it's time to go home. Thumbs up. They may even get lucky and see or hear a few animals lurking around. Listen and watch carefully. Tickets are $20 for the walk through and $75 for the drive through. If you have a young kid, this might be a great family event. Unfortunately, I found little to like about this seasonal attraction at the Phoenix Zoo. For $15/person it was underwhelming and you'd be better off at the Luminarias Las Noches. We preordered our tickets online and had issues using them, and customer service reps were robotic and not forthcoming with information or anything resembling an apology for the inconvenience. No discounts are available to get daytime and nighttime tickets together. I've been to similar events at other zoos but this one ranked lower than the others. Despite being AT a zoo, you won't see any animals that aren't electronic or made out of Legos, with the exception of the camels, which are available for rides. The animatronic giraffe and turtle show was embarrassingly bad. Some of the larger enclosures were accessible and lit, but had been intentionally cleared of animals. Perhaps we would have seen more or had a better experience, but apparently Intel was having some sort of family night, so 2000 of their employees were flooding the park in addition to the expected crowds, and had multiple areas cordoned off, which impacted our experience. The much-hyped 7PM "snowfall" didn't happen at all, and every advertised attraction seemed to cost extra and require an hour-long wait in line. The actual light display was at times inventive and cool- things like light up scorpions and flashing monkeys that appeared to be climbing trees, the cute kissing giraffes, and the beautiful neon-wrapped trees. I realize it's a family-friendly event but apparently no one has learned anything since the Harambe incident, and I was truly surprised how many kids were running amok unattended. There was no attempt by staff whatsoever to maintain organized or efficient lines or establish any sort of order. The Phoenix Zoo may be doing great things with animal conservation and the Specials Survival Program, but this event came off as a shameless money-grab that had nothing to do with the animals at all. RESPONSE TO MANAGEMENT: No, your website does not make it clear that this is not an animal viewing event. The phrase "limited animal viewing", serves to confirm the obvious visibility limitations given the evening timing but beyond that, more clear wording should be considered. read more

This review is for Cruise ZooLights - safe, pandemic fun! We loved our overall experience. In fact, I'm pretty sure this was the most enjoyable time at ZooLights I've likely ever had. We all put on our comfiest, coziest pajamas, loaded travel mugs up with hot chocolate, and piled my son's favorite stuffies all around him and headed for a drive through some lovely lights. My personal favorites were the wildlife lantern safari animals. They were beautifully crafted! We had fun deciding what each of the animals were - leopards or cheetah? Coyote or fox? As for living animals, we saw a rhino, a tiny lil sleeping owl, a handful of flamingo, and HUGE MFing LION. We were all struck by his majestic mane and the fact that he was bigger then the humongous rocks he was laying next to. wow. It took somewhere between a half hour and forty five minutes to drive through. The radio station they told us to turn to didn't connect the music very well at all. Very soft and crackly. I'd recommend having your own holiday playlist ready to go. Overall the price was a bit hefty, but we had a great time and it's hard to find cool, yet safe, things to do these days with my kiddo. We went to Zoolights with our friends for the second time last December. It cost about $100 for our family to go. The theme changes which keeps Zoolights fun to attend. I have always been curious about Zoolights and when my friend invited me I decided to go. I tried to buy my ticket offline like others mentioned to do on Yelp for a $2 discount. The website kept giving me an error and gave me a phone number to call. I called it and no one answered. So when I arrived early to order my ticket I mentioned to this to the cashier and was still charged full price. It was a $2 discount but I think they should have honored it. I was early and got to people watch before the rest of our group showed up. There were 10 of us, adults, and children. The line to get in was VERY long, but it moved quickly and we waited in that line for about 10 minutes. Inside I saw multiple food stands. They were selling hot cocca, kettle corn, beer, wine, food, etc. All overpriced but that is how they make some money of course! We wandered around and saw some cool lights. A few animals that were sleeping. I am curious if us being there disturbs their sleep? I guess during the day it would be the same for the nocturnal animals. I think it took us about 45 minutes to complete. Overall I had a good time because of the group of people I was with. The kids were really excited because "SHINY THINGS!" It was really cute. Worth $14 or $15? Not for myself, but could see others not minding. read more

As the sun sets and the animals start bedding down for the night. An expanse of lights illuminates a large part of the Phoenix Zoo. Walkways, light animal sculptures, lasers and the tallest trees I've seen lit up are there for all to enjoy. Stingray exhibit stays open for a nocturnal Christmas treat. Santa even makes a pit stop for visits. Get up close and personal with reindeer, ride camels and tons of wild bunnies who come out to play when the usual crowds are gone. From 530-1030 most of December into the first few days of January, Zoo lights is a fantastic event for all. Tip: do not get there at 530, or before 8-830 for that matter if you can. Parking and crowds at 6-730 can be a pain. We got there on last Saturday at 7 only to be turned away to park a fair walk away. We came back at 845 and got a front row parking space. read more

I guess I was expecting to see some real animals too, and I wasn't totally disappointed as there were a few bald eagles in one of the cages. The disappointment came when a nearby patron said to his small child "Look at the vultures." Just so we're all clear on this, he wasn't referring to the crowd around the cage looking in. If I were a zoo animal, I'd be hiding from the zoolights too, so I can't really blame the animals. We followed the pathways, which are clearly marked for the event, and only deviated once when Mark H. had to purchase a coffee. Actually, that place was definitely on the designated pathways. I also believe the gift shop was too. Thumbs up for the ability to purchase the tickets online and then just showing the tickets on my phone! No paper wasted, just the green paper for admission. This year, like last, we opted to do the cruise the zoo for Zoolights. It was a day and night experience. Last year it took about an hour and 15 from start to finish. No bumper to bumper crap and it was pleasant and memorable. That's why I was so excited to do it again this year! This year it was AWFUL. It was so backed up that we spent 2 hours without even seeing half of the lights before electing to leave at the first chance we were given. What a disappointment to spend all that time only to have to leave without getting your moneys worth. No direction of traffic, people had their headlights on, and at some point we were stopped for 15 minutes without moving an inch. I feel pretty ripped off... par for the course of the year 2021 I guess, lol. Aside from the negatives the lights were gorgeous, staff was friendly, and what we did get to see was nice. I've lived in Phoenix for almost 10 years and always received gasps when admitting I'd never seen Zoo Lights. I went for the first time this past Sunday evening and was blown away! They do a fantastic job of converting the Phoenix Zoo into a magical, visual wonderland. The trees are lit with moving lights, many in the shapes of different animals. If you look carefully, you can even see some of the real animals too. There is music, sound effects and different interactive elements like a polar slide and camel rides! My gf and I enjoyed ourselves, but not as much as my little niece and nephews who couldn't get enough of it all. It brings out the kid of anyone, maybe I'm just one crazy little love monkey, and if you're that much of a scrooge, have a hot cocoa and churro. Made it to the phoenix zoo lights this year. I went to la zoo lights two years ago and was expecting this to be very similar, but I have to say that the phoenix zoo's displays were wayyy better. The zoo itself was not crowded at all on the night we went and the lights on the trees were beautiful. They also had a nice selection of lit up lantern animals. We saw a few night animals that we're still up, including cranes, a porcupine and some javelina. This is definitely worth the price of admission for a fun night out. read more

Compared to the Houston Zoolights, a little disappointed. It still is a beautiful showing of lights, just don't expect to see many animals. I saw the camels that you can pay to ride, the backs of two bald eagles, and a Komodo Dragon. Much of park was roped off. Order tickets online for $2 discount. They don't have senior,student, or AAA discount. If you want to avoid all the children, go later in the night. Probably a one and done kind of event. Good event for kids since it doesn't take a long time to see everything. I would give it three and a half stars, but rounded up. read more

My husband and I decided to check out Zoo Lights because we didn't really know what to do in Arizona when we were visiting for a few days. Honestly, we were pretty bored in Arizona... and Zoo Lights was pretty much the highlight of our trip. Anyways, when we finally arrived around 6 pm (right when they start, and go until 10 pm) we really didn't know what to expect but were pretty impressed with all of the lights when we entered the parking lot, looking for parking (which there is plenty of by the way, but don't expect a spot right next to the entrance with all the other people wanting to check this out). I loved seeing all of the lights on the trees, aisles, walkways, buildings, etc. I also really loved the lights that moved and made it look like there was a tiger running in a circle or a bear moving his arms up and down. Honestly, this was a really fun little place to be for holiday lights (even if you aren't 12 and under). The majority of the animals were sleeping when we arrived (well they were probably up all day entertaining people... stars deserve to sleep), but we still did see a few animals (but forgot which animals they were at the moment). There is the sting ray area where you can touch the creatures in the touch tank, for a small fee, that are very much awake and moving if you want to watch that (which is near the entrance of the park). Honestly, paying only a mere $10 (each) was a steal (parking was free when we went) because it gave us something to do, helped us get into the holiday spirit and made for some great pictures and gave our eyes and brains a dazzling visual appeal. I don't really see myself coming back to Phoenix anytime soon, but if I ever come back and it's around November or December, then I would make sure to stop by Zoo Lights again. read more

Disappointed this year! I have been going with my nieces for a few years now and always had a great time. Not so much this year. Seems that they changed things around and made it smaller. We walked the display area in under 30 minutes. Everything else for kids to do is an extra charge, so be prepared to shell out once inside. The photo with Santa...$30? Are you kidding me. We looked at the photos and passed. The snack bars also closed early, over and hour before zoo lights ended. It was very cold the evening we went and all we wanted was some hot cocoa. I definitely think this would be a great attraction if you have little kids. Everything is just a little more fantastical when you're young, so families, I encourage the event for sure. As for the couples looking for a nice date night thing to do...I'd say, save your money and seek neighborhood lights instead. It was a nice little stroll around the zoo, and you were definitely reminded that you were in a zoo by all of the animal smells. The lights were unfortunately, underwhelming. Zoo lights were the event highlight of Grandma and Grandpa's holiday. Grandpa was the zoo member, we went all the time. When Grandpa passed away, we continued the tradition with Grandma by getting a membership and taking her often. She loved seeing the animal structures all lit up. And the 3D animals. We got coffee and walked around. SRP gave us some really neat glasses that allowed us to see rainbows in the lights. Grandma and I love rainbows!! When Grandma passed away, it was too hard to go, but in their memory we went back, pointing out the lights we thought they would love the most. Grandpa would have been thrilled with the new tiger enclosure. Grandma loved the ladybugs. Now we bring my little niece her favorites are *all the animals*. This was my second time at Zoo Lights and they have had different things both times which was nice. They seem to add more things each year. I went with a group of 4 adults and we had a blast. Really gets you in the Christmas mood ! (: Price is $20 for adults and takes about an hour but can be longer if you sit to enjoy the Lights or make stops which there is many areas to do so. They have a polar slide, camel rides,lots of vendors for hot chocolate/popcorn and Lego animals. Keep in mind there is usually not real animals out but the Lights are shaped like animals and it's smells like a zoo you still get the feel of the zoo. They lights are really pretty and romantic. My favorite part is the light show over the water that blinks to the sound of the music. It's nice you sit on the benches and enjoy the show. It can get busy so nice to go early but I highly recommend. I think it's one of the better light shows in Arizona for a decent price. It's cold so bring jacket and gloves if you have some. We enjoyed Zoolights 3 years ago and so when we finally had family in town for Thanksgiving 2021 we thought let's visit and have fun! What a disappointment! First family gathering in two years and it was too busy! It was walk fast and then slow then fast and slow. Dodge people. Repeat. Ridiculous. The AZ trail was only one that had one way traffic so why not the rest? People needed direction on other trails they were not considerate. Also don't remember so many poop smells during day last visit. I'll agree with previous recent reviewer: no traffic control and with covid still raging and recent tragedy at Astroworld, I didn't feel safe in many spots on the trails. There is a large section that is having construction and may be causing traffic but the fact that they don't limit crowds every day is probably it. Put better limits on crowds each day. Look at what DBG is doing next door. Make it safer and enjoyable! We couldn't even view some of the lights because there were too many people. Couldn't find hot chocolate...it was near exit. Got in line for restroom, it took over 10 mins. Popcorn line, so dark I couldn't see the end of it. I was considering becoming a member but the poor planning and zoo's greediness has left a bad experience for us. I know if DBG next door had luminarias earlier than we would've paid more and gone there for a better experience. read more
