This is our second year attending Zoolights, and it's quickly becoming a Thanksgiving tradition for us. I originally learned about it through SRP (my electric company) and have been lucky enough to use their BOGO offer each year -- such a great perk! This time we brought my boyfriend's family, who were visiting for Thanksgiving week. His sister has a 17-year-old and twin 12-year-olds... and honestly, keeping teens entertained these days is an Olympic sport, but they loved it. They were genuinely in awe of all the lights and displays. His parents, who are in their 70s, were equally impressed -- especially by the light show. You can tell how much effort goes into creating everything, and it really shows. The doors opened at 5:30pm, so you won't see many animals out at night, which is totally understandable. Just keep in mind this is truly a Zoolights event -- if you want to see the animals, plan for a daytime pass or a membership visit. Overall, it's a fantastic experience for locals and visitors. Just wear comfy shoes or plan a few sitting breaks -- the property is pretty big! We all left feeling festive, cozy, and definitely in the holiday spirit.

Great kid friendly event with awesome light displays! Parking was a little difficult, I would recommend coming a little early in order to avoid traffic and waiting in long lines to park.

Great way to enjoy the holiday lights. The zoo is covered in lights and illuminated animal decorations help to bring the excitement. Don't expect to see live animals, some are out on display but there are no lights inside the enclosures so spotting them can be difficult. Instead joy the festive environment and running into friends you haven't seen in a while. Great place for groups or a company nighttime event.

Always an amazing time year each year! This is my 3rd year going as my company will rent out the zoo for the night for our Christmas event! Right when we walk in they scan our private event tickets. There's a gift shop to the right and a place to rent wheelchairs or electric scooter. Once in we usually make our way to the carousel so the kids can use the ride tickets that the company provides. I was sad to see that we missed the reveal of the new carousel upgrade. There are plenty of places to get hot chocolate or other food items for sale. It's beautiful as you walk around and see the different Animal lights, but none of the animals are out at night. One year, we were lucky to see them feeding the elephants. It's a lot of walking and it can get a bit chilly at night. So you might wanna bring a jacket. We bring a wagon just in case the kids get tried from all the walking. This year they had lighted swings for the kids to swing on. The line was too long. They also didn't have the camels out to ride as the year before they did. It started to rain around 9:30 so we rushed out of there as soon as the thunder and lighting hit. Parking is free and there's plenty of it. They even have a EV charging station available. Look forward to next year!

Zoolights is such a wonderful event! The lights, the animals, the hot cocoa! Music is the background as you enjoy the show! The lights are so beautiful and the views are gorgeous! Beyond that, the hot chocolate is amazing! If you go at 540, it'll be early enough so you can see some of the animals! Near the camels. there is a whole section where you can sit at a fire and make s'mores with your family

Atmosphere - It was quite festive despite being early in the season. I liked that it wasn't too crowded early in the night. After a while it did get more crowded and we bumped into more people standing in the middle of the lane, taking photos, or just the kids generally roaming around. There were restrooms available here and there, but I didn't visit any of them. Near the lake you can see the light show on the tree in the lake with lights in time with the music. Food: I didn't buy anything there, but it looked like they had a hot chocolate station, a s'mores station, and other food shops open for people to purchase food. Service - There were many employees. The service to get into the event was quick and friendly. They scanned our QR code and we were ready to go. There are employees along the trail to make sure people don't go into unauthorized areas and don't come out of any too. Parking - Was crowded. No signage or landmarks in the parking lot to help you find your car again later. No parking meters or parking structures. No shaded spots available. If during a summer day, your car will be HOT in the summer. Future - May come back. Have been to this event before. Saw some photos on Yelp of lights I didn't see this time around or previously. Didn't know they sometimes change a few of the lights. Some of the lights I did recognize from prior years. I don't like seeing the Halloween lights during the later holiday season after October. They don't give off the right vibe for December. Didn't get to see the elephant in prior years. Great for some evening walking. It was nice to see.

We go to zoolights every year! It's better to go earlier in the season if crowds bother you like they do me, but otherwise it's a perfect nighttime outing. They make a lot of accommodations for parking too so even on busy nights when the zoo lot is full, they have free parking just down the road. They add new lights every year and I think each year gets better and better. There's also attractions you can pay additionally for, which I usually don't do, but they have stuff like bounce houses, camel rides, carousel, hot chocolate, etc.

Zoolights are so lovely. This has been our 5th visit since it's existence. Our nephew's amazing girlfriend volunteers here and invited us this year for a little Zoolight adventure with our girls. It was their last night of the season. Parking was a breeze. Walking up and downhill was a treat. Very accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooter. Wide blacktop walking path throughout. Colorful lights are always fun to walk and see, plus bonus exercise. Great family or date night. For those with food allergies, you're best off to bring your own food and drink if needed. It is allowed. They are not set up to accommodate allergies, nor have knowledge of ingredients. I was told by one of 4 areas you can grab a snack, that the kettle corn was cooked in soy oil, so that is all I could find out. No biggie for us. We don't expect anyone to, and we always come prepared. Staff is nice. It was a treat having a guided tour of someone who works there so we didn't miss anything including animal sightings at night. And interesting tidbits. Our girls enjoyed the carousel, and camel ride. They are so good to the animals here and put a lot into their zoo. Definitely will be coming back to see the animals during the day. Never mind splurging a bit as the money goes to a good cause in the shop. You can see the plane land at the airport, yet not hear them. A lovely night out with family. We thought we would be in and out in 2 hours. We were there just over 3 and could have stayed longer, but had school and work early the following day.

Had a great time. Just know you will not see any animals but the lights are nice. Is it worth the money probably not for $35 per person. That's probably hard for a family of four. Kids around us seemed entertained so that's all that mattered.

We decided to visit ZooLights with our friends after not going for several years! It was a fantastic experience, and our friends, who had never been before, absolutely loved it! The lights were stunning, and the atmosphere was just right! The weather was perfect and it wasn't overly crowded! We did feel like there were many more lights and trees in previous years, but since we hadn't been in a while we weren't sure. We definitely had a great time and can't wait to go back next year! We may make just this a new annual tradition!

I haven't been to zoo lights in ages. Last night I met my daughter and granddaughter there and I was so impressed by how well the zoo light experience was run and the beautiful displays. I have to say the weather was perfect for strolling along the lit pathways listening to Christmas music and sipping hot cocoa. There are some vendors for food, snacks and assorted beverages. Also they have an entire area for roasting marshmallows and making smores. It was a very enjoyable night and definitely recommend this for families and our out of town visitors.

Amanda A.

I've been to zoolights three times now thanks to my realtor who hosts an event with free entrance each year. It's a fun and festive way to spend an hour or two. It's a lot of walking and not many animals are visible, but we did get to see an elephant this time around. This year we splurged and did the s'mores experience. It's pricey for what you get and they limit you to 20 minutes, but my mom really wanted to roast marshmallows so we did it. Dress warm and be prepared to walk!

Michelle B.

This is a great holiday experience that is fun for the whole family. The lights are great and the lake show beautiful. It is easy to see everything in about 2 hours. The animals are all away for the evening so just be prepared to not see any. It is crowded and parking can be a bit of a struggle if you get there right at opening, but just come a little early and you will be fine.

They can be seen wandering their yard climb on the activity's or inside avoiding the heat. The animals of Arizona section is really well done. Much more walkable than much of the rest of the zoo and provides ample shade for guests and animals. The zoo is pretty hilly in many sections including the farm and the Sahara exhibits. Be prepared to walk a lot. There are restrooms and zoo stands around, but many were closed on a Wednesday. It is a fun zoo, but definitely harder during the summer months to fully enjoy.

You need time, comfy shoes, and realistic expectations because there is SO much ground to cover. Zoo, aquarium, safari park -- it really does feel like three attractions in one. The aquarium section honestly surprised me. That massive prehistoric-looking fish (looked straight out of a dinosaur era) was unreal. Between the giant tanks and the variety of species, it didn't feel like a small add-on -- it felt like a legit aquarium experience inside the zoo. The animal variety is wild. We saw everything from vibrant macaws perched up high greeting guests, to monkeys lounging in the sun, to antelope practically close enough to admire their horns in detail. The white tiger was stunning, and the big cats pacing in their enclosures definitely command your attention. You're not just looking at one or two showcase animals -- there's a LOT here. It's not super polished or ultra-modern like some major metro zoos, but that's kind of the vibe. It feels expansive, a little rugged, very Arizona. More spread out, less theme-park aesthetic. A couple things to note: it can get warm and it's a lot of walking. Food options are typical park-style fare -- nothing I'd go out of my way for. Pricing can add up with admission and extras, so plan accordingly. Overall, a solid four stars. If you're looking for a full day with serious animal variety -- from aquarium tanks to safari species to big cats -- this place delivers. Just come prepared to explore.

I purchased the annual membership and it costs more than the family plan at the Phoenix Zoo. As a stay at home mom, I was looking for things to entertain my daughter during the week. Most of the restaurants and exhibits were closed the days I came by. I purchased a membership so of course I want to come on a day other than Saturday to avoid the huge crowds, but I felt like I couldn't use my membership to its full advantage because it was practically deserted during the week staff/amenity wise. Could only buy a drink/food at one of the food courts at the front of the zoo which was frustrating considering how huge this place is and when it's hot, the rides were closed most of the time (plus they cost extra, even for members), and the giraffe feedings weren't ever available either. I tried multiple days during the week as well and had the same experience. I'm not sure if the little snack shacks & places are open on Saturdays or if they are closed permanently, but there were a ton of unused/unopened spaces that look like they'd be cool... if they were operable. $261.59 felt like a lot to just walk around in dirt to look at animals in an outdated space. Plus only I could take my daughter alone or else we would need to spend an additional $262 for my husband to have a membership. If you have kids 3+, it would be an additional $133 per child! Greeeeeedy if you ask me considering the Phoenix zoo prices. We didn't renew and will make the drive to the Phoenix zoo. The gas money will be worth the much lower membership price over there.

I also think it's really cute that they take your picture when you get to aquarium. We did not purchase our photo although it was very nice one. It was just a little too pricey, $30 for one photo if I am not mistaken. I personally love to go to the aquarium to see their variety of jellyfish and stingrays, and I am always especially happy when they have puffer fish. I was in luck. Not only did they have a wonderful, huge amazing display of jellyfish, but they also had the cutest display of puffer fish. I was finally able to show my daughter what they look like up close. That was pretty special to me. And even better, as I took a picture of these puffer fish on my phone, they noticed my sparkly keychain. When they saw that, they were drawn to it. They came right up to the glass. My daughter was in awe. The aquarium has this amazing rotating display. At first, I didn't know what to think about it. I didn't quite understand what it was. So of course, naturally, my family and I had to check it out. You are seated in a small auditorium. Their seats are more than comfortable, and the auditorium is very well air-conditioned. It takes you through a series of different huge displays. One of them features some of the most beautiful stingrays I've ever seen. Another features sea lions. And of course, a few feature the different fish and sharks. I have never in my life experienced a presentation like that. It was amazing. If we had had more time, I probably would've wanted to watch the presentation a second time. My kiddo isn't so young and teeny tiny anymore, but there are lots of little kids play areas at the aquarium. There is what I called the water table. There is running water that flows through there and the kids are able to use flat panels of plastic to redirect the water through this kind of maze if you will. That's a big favor. Be sure you have paper towels on hand for when your kiddo is done here. They will most likely be wet up to their elbows. It's a cute and fun way to make friends too. They are different opportunities for visitors to get more up close and impersonal with a variety of animals that they have here at the aquarium. We did not participate. One day, hopefully we can. There was so much to see. Everyone at the aquarium was so friendly. There are some Touch pools and opportunities for kids to pet different sea plants and small animals. That is always fun. One thing I had never seen before was a Starbucks inside of a aquarium. This is not just any Starbucks my friends. This particular Starbucks understands that parents need a break too. I'm not talking strictly about coffee. The Starbucks inside of this aquarium offers a small variety of adult drinks. Yes, you heard me correctly. They offered beer. I believe they also offer a few seltzers. Anyway, I thought that was pretty cool. My family and I didn't have an opportunity to actually enjoy anything from Starbucks, but we did take notice of their offerings. If you will be in the area for a couple of days, this is easily one of the better things to be able to take advantage of. If you purchased your aquarium tickets along with tickets to other attractions at the Arizona Boardwalk at the same time, you can create a ticket bundle. In doing so, you will receive a discount on your tickets. I can't quite remember what the percentage off amount was. However, we did purchase tickets to the aquarium as well as to the Museum of illusions. I think that might've given us 20 or 30% off of the combined ticket price. Definitely check it out online. It was a good deal. Parking here is free. They have lots completely around the entire boardwalk area. I really enjoy the boardwalk space. There is a large courtyard in the middle. It is great and perfect space for kids to come and enjoy lunch outside, especially for small schools that come to visit for a field trip. It really is just a beautiful spot. The aquarium and our experience at the boardwalk area was phenomenal. You must take a moment to check out the bathroom. Initially, I thought the whole little thing about the bathroom being cool was some sort of a joke or just something funny to post. But no, it really is pretty awesome. People often flock to the bathroom just to check that out. It can make for kind of a tight situation when the bathroom area is being crowded because people want to see the sharks. But, it was the one time that I could say that there were sharks in my bathroom. LOL Our visit here worked out perfectly. We came here right after breakfast and by the time that we left, it was definitely time for a little bit of a late lunch. There is definitely more than enough for everyone here.

One of my goals this year has been to do the types of things tourists do. So, on a beautiful day on…read morea Sunday, I stopped by Desert Botanical Garden (DBG) for a little adventure. It's no surprise that this botanical garden is one of the top attractions in Phoenix on TripAdvisor... it's an amazing spot. I'll walk you through how to maximize your experience. First off, parking won't be a problem in the large free lot they have. It may be busy, but you'll find a spot. From there, make your way to the entrance. I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I bought my ticket online (they say you should but I haven't tested the theory). You have to select a time slot. I showed up close to 5 p.m. Rather than showing up early in the day, I recommend stopping by around 4-5 p.m. The reason? It's the optimal amount of time to enjoy everything DBG has to offer. I'll get to more of that in a second. When you enter, you'll be given a map. What's nice about the map is that it highlights the must-sees in the garden. Which helps you allocate your time. I'm the type that likes to explore every nook and cranny. If you do that, you'll be there for 3-4 hours. Make sure to bring water. They also have a short audio tour that's available through QR codes so bring headphones if you'd like to check that out. Now let's get to what makes DBG an incredible place. First, and most importantly, the sheer volume and impressiveness of all of the cacti and other plans. You'll get to see a bunch of different types, while also learning about them. And also the people, animals, and history surrounding it all. Second, for someone who appreciates an attention to detail, this park is well laid out. There are water stations in a lot of places (well needed in a hot climate like Phoenix). There are a good number of bathrooms. The grounds are well maintained. They incorporate technology into the experience. Well thought out and well implemented. Third, if you're looking to enjoy more than the sights, there are vendors selling alcoholic beverages and soft drinks so you can sip and stroll. And if you're hungry, there's both a cafe and a restaurant. And last but not least, as you would expect, a gift shop. Now, let's get back to why I recommended that you stop by in the late afternoon. If you do, you'll have several hours to explore while there's sunlight and still be in the park during sunset. Seeing a sunset in the botanical garden is a sight to behold with the Papago Mountains in the background. And better yet, stay after sunset. Desert Botanical Gardens closes at 10 p.m. When the sun goes down, the flora lights up with colorful lights. Seeing all of the plans with green, purple, orange lights everywhere makes for a cool sensory experience. In a way, seeing the park during the day, at sunset, and at night is three different experiences all rolled into one. Enjoy! One of my favorite attractions I've visited in town.

A WHOLE DAY OUT We visited for 8 hours, which included…read morehaving dinner at Gertrude's restaurant, seeing the gardens by day and night, experiencing the "Framerate: Desert Pulse" exhibit, the evening "Pulse Party" and visiting the gift shop. If you simply came to see the gardens by day and did nothing else, you'd probably be there 2-4 hours. We purchased our tickets on-line in advance. FRAMERATE: DESERT PULSE EXHIBIT WAS WELL WORTH IT We happened to see a segment on TV about the "Framerate: Desert Pulse" exhibit and decided to spend a weekend in Phoenix so we could see it. The exhibit consists of some large screens placed around the garden showing stunning time-lapse photography of desert cacti, flowers, scenery and much more. It was nothing like we'd ever seen. There is also a large air-conditioned room with more large screens for a further sensory experience. IT'S A LARGE GARDEN! I will say the garden is quite extensive, so make sure you're wearing comfy shoes, have sun protection and water. There are some water fountains around the garden for refilling. Note: The ground is dusty, so don't wear your newest white sneakers! One improvement I would suggest is that they have better directional signage within the garden. WE STAYED FOR THE PULSE PARTY CONCERT In the late afternoon we attended the "Pulse Party" which included a live band, some food trucks (food extra) and some activities. We had tickets for this, but nobody checked them, which we thought was odd. I thought the Pulse Party was OK. My husband particularly liked the band. DINNER Dinner at Gertrude's was a nice addition to the day. Definitely make reservations as they were full on a Friday evening in April. RIDE SHARE AREA There is a specific area for ride share drop off/pick-up on the edge of the parking lot. Look for the signs. We took a ride share from downtown Phoenix where were were staying. SMALLER CAFÉ WAS CLOSED There was a cafe at the back of the garden, but it didn't seem to be open the day we were there as it was behind a roped off area, along with one of the larger Framerate screens, which was disappointing. WE ENJOYED OUR VISIT We enjoyed our visit and took lots of photographs. I don't think it's something we would visit again if we were in Phoenix, but it was definitely worth visiting the first time!
