Zool Zool is the brand new ramen bar on Mt Eden road nestled in with the other popular eateries. To be honest it wasn't on my top places to visit, but for a simple late night feed it's a good option. I'm definitely no noodle queen, but from the ramen bowls we had, theres a great amount of flavour in the broths. There was a small complaint from my friend that there wasn't enough meat in her bowl, but ramen is normally about the noodles vs the other accompaniments. No different to pasta dishes at italian restaurants. If you want a broth with a stronger flavour choose the Tantan. It actually wasn't too spicy. If you're more into subtle flavours go with the Tonkotsu bowl. I loved that the ramen soup spoons were wooden. The texture gives it a really smooth feel in your mouth and the scoop is perfect for sipping the soup plus fits the noodles perfectly. The ramen were presented in beautiful bowls and at a appropriate size to eat from - which sounds weird to say, but I have eaten at other places where the bowl is too big and awkward to eat from. Lastly if you love edmame they come in 4 different flavours served in old school lunch paper bags with a punch of flavour. The garlic edamame was extremely salty but extremely good. Zool Zool is cool cool. Rating Food: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Value for Money: Very Good 405 Mt Eden road, Mt Eden Opening Hours: Tues-Sat 1130am-10pm Sun 1130am-230pm

    Tan tan men

I've been eying off Zool Zool for some time, and finally decided to try it out the other night. The last time I had ramen was in Tokyo, so this place had a lot to live up to! First of all, I wished they had more comfortable seating - I'm short, and perching on a high stool isn't my favourite way to spend an evening. The staff were all super friendly! I got the tan tan men, and my husband got the tonkotsu ramen. It was my first time trying tan tan men, and I mostly liked it, but it was a bit too oily for me to eat the whole thing. The flavour was great, though. We were on a budget, so only drank water, but next time I'm totally having some of their warm plum wine! We shared their homemade creme caramel for dessert, which was out-of-this-world creamy and divine. Will definitely come back to try another kind of ramen!

Seafood ramen (asked for spicy but wasn't very hot at all) and a Japanese beer. Nice ramen but not the best I've had in Auckland.

The service was very friendly and it restaurant itself is well appointed with a bar and cosy tables. The ramen was tasty, however not to best I've had in Auckland and especially for that price.

    Epic tan tan ramen

So, so stoked to finally have eaten here and that its close to home. On a cold night you can't beat a bowl of ramen and this spot has some epic bowls of solid flavour with super fresh noodles and a side list almost worthy of a meal in itself. I had the tan tan ramen which had some chilli & sesame flavour that warmed me right through. The chicken karaage was tender and moreish, I'm just sad the Takoyaki and pork buns will have to wait till next time bThe drinks list is well solid and there are some cheat day worth sweet treats in the cabinet. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the staff know their stuff. Love it. Can't wait to go back!

    Can recommend the chicken karaage

It's not brilliant because I guess you only get that in Japan I suppose but compared to Mentatz (on High Street) and Tanpopo (Anazc Ave) it's good. It's also famously nestled between a few well known Symonds St eateries namely Ginas which is a funny and loud Italian restaurant, a top end Japanese eatery which I can't remember the name of, a well known Sushi eatery and also a cheap and cheerful Thai dining house. So you assume that there's plenty of competition about! First time I rolled in I ordered a Giyoyaki Ramen (fish and pork broth and probably spelt wrong) and it was delicious. The broth is probably the most important part of Ramen and it was rich and creamy. Some may argue otherwise that it's each individual part that gives the rise to the whole Ramen. But I say broth. For me it was a little tad on the small side as I was super hungry but everything is fine, a little short on the extra condiments as I usually like a bit of bamboo shoots. Second time I went I had a spicy ramen. I had a good look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can make it large for an extra $1. So I went with that and it totally filled me up. Go get your Ramen Fix there!

After scanning the broad menu, we ordered up two lunch bento box specials, an eel plate and tonkatsu shoyu ramen bowl. Food arrived mere moments later, seemingly faster than your local Maccas! The lunch special included miso soup, takoyaki, tuna/salmon sashimi salad, chicken teriyaki and a bowl of rice (and some unknown yet tasty chicken cucumber marianated dish). Not a bad deal for $16 NZ. Chicken teriyaki was excellent, btw. The eel arrived in a very generous portion (3x what we'd normally get in the states) and delish! Ramen was perfectly flavored (not too salty) and the noodles were tender. A good lunch stop in the heart of the CBD, and a good value if you're used to paying in USD! A nice refreshing Japanese meal preparing us for our upcoming experience in Japan -- should be ranked higher than the 3.5 stars currently on Yelp!

The entrance is dark so you can't really tell if it's a restaurant. Also, it's definitely hard to tell if it's open or not. There are signs, but it's a bit confusing still. Ha! When you do go inside it, the atmosphere is quiet and calm. It definitely does feel like one of those smaller Japanese restaurants that you have been to if you have ever been to Japan. There's a sushi bar area where you can sit. There's also an authentic Japanese dinning area, set up with the tatami floors, walls, cushions and table where you have to take off your shoes in order to be seated there. There are also western seating available where we sat. The staff are quick to serve and are friendly. The food was delivered fairly quickly, and we didn't wait long. The taste of the food was really close to the kind that you would find if you lived in Japan. If you're looking for a good meal, this place I would recommend!

Soy sauce, Miso, Salt and Tonkotsu Ramen, four elementary Ramen but classic to choose. There are more to come if you would like some special treat to your noodle. Quite a Japan Style! Honestly, for this kind of noodle place, always try the basic and best one. Tonkotsu is not a bad choice. Nice soup, slow cooked pork slice, bamboo shoots and fresh spinach for a taste bonus. What's more, you can choose fried dumplings, they call Gyoza and some pork stew for small bites. They are both quite authentic. Just wish they could turn these seats a bit more tidy, then it would be closer to my Ramen Place expectation.
