Paul and his crews did an amazing job completely renovating our backyard. The crews were busy every day, digging, hauling, scraping and building, and Paul was often on site to check in with his employees and foreman (who were great-- professional and super productive.) My husband and I were always so excited to come home at the end of the day to see what new developments to the project had unfolded. They got the entire project done in the promised time, which is all the more impressive considering we recently got a random two weeks of rain, which put a completely halt to hardscaping. We worked with a designer prior to starting this job and through Landscape Locators, we selected Zion. Paul runs this family owned business with a small but loyal crew. We fully appreciated working with them and how they broke out every single line item by item. This helped us in being able to edit our job in order to fit our budget. They were patient with our needs and challenges of a difficult neighbor and we really appreciated that. They were accommodating along the way as we had some edits and they just made it work! They even warranty their landscaping which we've had to use. The only caution we want to share is that when you select them, have in mind that it will require some patience on your part. While they might not be the least expensive landscapers in the area, they do perform wonderful work. I was particularly impressed with their masonry and hardscape work. Executive Summary: If you have detailed plans, personally check all their layouts/measurements and primarily only care about hardscaping, this crew will do a great job. If you are bothered by layouts being out several inches, lines not lining up with existing structures (like walls of your property), can't accept minor damage to your property (they will claim they DID not cause) and have half of what the plant die, then I'd recommend you keep searching. For further information, keep reading: The project started out on a bad note. When Paul (the owner and father of the 2 boys) set foot on the property for the first time, he noted that the dirt removal was not covered in the quote and it was going to be several thousand extra. This is despite Sam (the less experienced, former failed yogurt store operator) taking photos and checking back with his father on estimates and revisions. Somehow something as basic as site prep and dirt removal was not quoted, bringing their estimate higher than the next closest estimate I had. Father and Sons: Sam will likely be the one first on site, taking pictures and providing quotes. Don't time this right after lunch or you may have to tolerate whatever garlic-infused monstrosity he had for lunch for hours. At the time of my project, he had only been on the job for a few years. Despite this, whenever you ask him a question about something that he has no rational answer for, he will claim that they have been doing this for "over 30 years" and that's just the way it is. Don't waste your time arguing with him. Either accept it or reject it. He lacks the capacity to understand or empathize and will not go back to his father for clarification. Simon is the younger brother. He will be your daily contact. He speaks Spanish and is on site with the crews every day. He acts as both site foreman and head crew member. However, He can not make decisions on behalf of his father so every question/request lags. Latency can be bad if your project is smaller and less important than whatever else they're working on. When the outline of a layout was incorrect in 2 spots, he was responsive and only ended up fixing one of the 2 errors. If you don't watch him closely and you care about getting the details right, you'll be disappointed. Paul is the owner and will have rational explanations of why things don't match drawings. Some make sense, most don't. The problem is that none of this was brought up before doing the job. He's making changes on the fly and if something was deliberate and important to you, he won't bother to ask or inform before these changes just happen. He will not admit or apologize for making a mistake. He will not offer any recourse/refund/credit. You'll just have to live with it unless you want to take legal action. The crew builds great walls. They're strong, level and straight. Foundations are deep and reinforced. Tiling is even and everything drains properly. Hardscape is their strength. Making Amends: There were a lot of mistakes made during this project. 1. Right and left sides of a driveway had colored concrete and did not match. This was primarily due to them hand mixing one side and then ordering a truckload for the other side. You'd think after 30+ years, they'd knot there was no way to match this and should've poured both sides with the same batch. 2. A connecting concrete path between the driveway and the side path was 33" instead of 36". This was pointed out BEFORE the concrete was poured. They said they would fix it before the pour. They did not. You wouldn't think this is a big deal until a trash bin's wheel drops into the corner every week due to being 3" short. 3. Right and left planters are nearly a full foot off from each other in width. To be fair, there was an error in the drawing, which they followed without asking me if this was intentional. There was nothing else in the layout that would've suggested they should not match. 4. There were massive chunks taking out of the block wall on the side of the house where their loader was moving dirt. They claim this was not damage they inflicted. I don't know how massive chunks would magically fall off of a block wall on a brand new house but they eventually agreed to repair it. It still looks terrible but at least it's filled in. 5. There are (possibly mortar) stains on the stucco. They weren't there before the job started. They did not claim responsibility and did not repair. They did not provide before photos to show that they were there prior to the job. 6. Most of the stucco on the bottom edge of the exterior walls along where they poured concrete were chipped off, to the point that you can see the metal edging. They also claim this was not their damage. I don't know how else this damage could possible have happened. Again, no before photos to show it was already there. Before they were Zion, they were something else. They may change their name again after amassing enough negative press. read more

We are extremely happy with Zion Landscaping. The end product was better than what we had imagined plus it came within the original estimate (except for items that we added). The owner, Paul, was very accommodating and patiently guided us through the project keeping us updated and offering valuable suggestions based on his many years of experience. This was our first time doing this type of renovation, front and back yard plus a large patio deck. The workers were very thorough and detail oriented. Kudos to Hector the job foreman for keeping the project on schedule. When there was an issue, Paul or Hector resolved it quickly. I also have tons of citrus trees on my property that I was not familiar with the proper names of the fruit. They were able to not only name every one of them correctly, but they tagged all my trees for me! This is my first real hardscaping job for my front and backyard, so I don't have a lot of experience to go off of. But Zion's crew does really good work. I had them put in a combination of travertine tiles, artificial turf, and concrete in the backyard...and 2 pilasters with a planter wall in the front. I got my plants elsewhere, but they also did my irrigation. Looks great- they pay attention to detail and are open to feedback along the way. They help get your plans through your HOA, and know what rules/regulations to follow. My only issue with the whole process was picking out the colors of the travertine tiles. This might have been due to my lack of experience, but I wasn't able to get true samples to choose from at first. I was told to go look on my own at samples at the warehouse, but I didn't get much direction or help when I got there. The warehouse wouldn't let me get samples for some reason, and I wish someone from Zion was there to help me. So I ended up choosing a color from a brochure, but I didn't like it once Zion brought the actual tiles to my house. So the whole shipment went back. It cost me, but I really didn't like the color. I went to the warehouse a second time on my own, and I was lucky to find a lady that actually walked me through all the options, the differences in texture/treatment/finish/etc., and she agreed that the color was wrong and there was no way I could have known from a brochure. Plus, she let me take home samples. That's all I needed, and I chose the color I wanted/liked once I saw the samples. So for those who don't see this as obvious advice, make sure you ask Zion to go together with you, to the warehouse, and pick from the actual samples, not their brochure or what is displayed on the wall at the warehouse. Someone just called me for a referral for Paul's work and it reminded me that I've been meaning to post a great review for him and his company. We received three bids, and for us, Paul's was actually the highest, but he was worth every penny. The other bids we received didn't include accurate timelines or estimates for the quality of tiles we wanted to use and for the kinds of trees and plants we wanted as well. Paul was honest with his estimate and managed our expectations as we had never built out a backyard before. We started off with a concrete pad and lots of dirt and Paul and his guys created a safe (we have twin toddlers) and beautiful backyard. He and his crew were incredibly professional and courteous - they were respectful of the fact that I work from home and that our twins ran around the house quite often. Paul submitted all our paperwork for us (to our HOA), his crew always cleaned up after themselves (so I never worried that our boys would get hurt by any equipment or tools lying around), and when we had issues from our house settling after a while, he didn't hesitate to send his guys to take care of any problems.
