No matter what state you're in when you finally reach your destination to break your fast, it will always be on an empty stomach. So here enters my gripe. Like a bear, I become increasingly grizzly when time stretches between meals. So when the time to receive a menu after being seated feels like the amount of time it takes for three other tables to be seated, watered and menued; roaring more aptly replaces the feeling of grizzly. I don't think I've heard the words "just one second, guys" repeated so frequently in one sitting. Once we received our menus, chosen what we wanted, we promptly shut them to indicate we were more than ready to devour pretty much the entire menu. A good ten minutes, and three, "just one second, guys'" later, we ordered. By this stage, I could barely hold a conversation over the ferocious grumblings of my stomach, yet alone concentrate on sipping on what was the most watery tasting orange juice. The snail-paced, unfriendly, abrupt and just plain rude service was unfortunately not compensated by a delicious meal. Simple raisin toast was unbuttered, causing the diner to butter their own luke-warm toast. No salty-buttery, cinnamon-raisin explosion of a tastebud party here. The slightly over-cooked poached eggs looked like they had been poured straight out of the pan, as they slid around the plate in a pool of water. The bacon...well it just looked like ham; not at all crispy. Not once did the wait staff check on us, nor the other diners around us, and two more "just one second, guys'" later, we had our plates cleared and bill on the table. With a grand total of five one seconds', this was one very prickly grizzly bear.

Located on Racecourse Road in Hamilton, on race days alfresco diners can enjoy the parade of frocked up fillies sporting extravagant fascinators that dawn the sidewalks. The food here is divine. Delicious fresh pasta dishes, succulent seafood stews, delectable pizzas and a great selection of entrees and desserts that will make your mouth-water. If you are a coffee lover like me, then you simply must order their affogato which is fit for a Queen. For only $6.00 you get a big scoop of creamy vanilla ice-cream served in a martini glass. This is topped with a crisp wafer biscuit and accompanied by a shot of hot, aromatic coffee which is served in a petite silver jug - very elegant. After eating out in Ascot I always take a walk along the Brisbane River, it makes me feel much better after overindulging and is quite a pretty walk with great views of Newstead House and gardens and Brisbane CBD.

However, if you're not into the races, it's a pub that's casual enough for a weekend afternoon session of drinking with your friends. After a few largers you should then head out the back for a decent steak and chips. You wont be disappointed. Through out the Hammy, there is a consistent décor that runs through that gives the place a "please refrain from going too hard" feel. Perhaps it's the rather large games section with its grey crowd of punters on the pokies, or the middle aged families dining in the restaurant. One thing is for certain, it doesn't really invite the younger generations. It does try mind you. In the Hammy there's a pretty decent sized live venue with a PA system that would be envied by some clubs in the valley. Over the past few months the Hammy has played host to USA Hip Hop and RnB acts Naughty by Nature and EVE. It's a good start, but these efforts have proven fruitless. It's up to the Hammy really, either loosen your rather stiff image, or just keep with the pokies.

It was however a nice night. We had an enjoyable few drinks before heading home. It was busy but not too over crowded and there was a broad range of ages and people. I have also been here once for a coffee on afternoon which was enjoyable too.

Dinner for two last night; the service was very friendly; we were offered a choice of table and were able to find a quiet romantic corner which was perfect. The waiter was very helpful, friendly and efficient. Oysters were recommended for entrée and they were truly sublime; very, fresh; put me in mind of the oysters I bought when I was last in coffin bay. Juicy, creamy and simply to die for. My partner had the antipasto plate which was full of wonderful treats. Main was the 1KG on the bone fillet steak which we shared; our minds were completely blown; so tender, sweet and tasty. It was served with a variety of sauces and mustards and a collection of veges which all worked together perfectly. We were both lost for words really. The ambience of the place is great; background music/noise not too disturbing and the staff dedicated to make you feel welcome. We are really looking forward to returning and trying some more delicious morsels on the menu.

We looked at the menu at Belvedere Bar N Grill and settled on getting a table. Plenty of gluten free options and plenty of meat for the husband, everything looked the goods! The staff were very polite when they showed us to our table. Unfortunately the views of the river were blocked by some equipment from the cruise ships, but the restaurant is still a beautiful, bright and airy space. I ordered the Berkshire pork belly and the crispy calamari (both entrees) to be served when my husband's steak was served. The wait staff were really great about my being gluten free and told me they would advise the chef and make sure everything was looked after. We enjoyed excellent service with prompt drink orders and the wait wasn't too long for the meals. The atmosphere was lovely despite an extremely noisy table walking in part way through our meals. A man we can only presume was the owner asked us how everything was toward the end of our meals and we both raved. The dishes were fresh and well presented with amazing flavours. Definitely a cut above your normal grill restaurant. Now we have discovered this hidden gem we will definitely be back!

The restaurant is open and bright with soft colours, the atmosphere is pleasant. Full table service is provided by the friendly staff and you are able to dine indoors or alfresco. My favourite dish is the Cheese Saganaki, a delicate slice of grilled haloumi cheese which is served with fresh tzatziki dip, warm pita bread and a fresh garden salad. I love the squeak of the haloumi cheese and the added tang from a drizzle of lemon juice. The prices are very reasonable and you can pay cash or card. Finding a saucer of tomato sauce on my plate is a not-so-nice surprise and instantly rings alarm bells; if it needs sauce then the ingredients mustn't carry enough flavour within themselves. Also, I'm not so much of a fan of a full breakfast which looks and tastes like something anyone can make at home. Sadly, this is what I found at Vagelis. We ordered two "Mini Breakfasts" ($7.95 each) which came with a slice of thick buttered white toast, one grilled tomato, two rashers of bacon, a fried egg, chipolata sausage pierced onto the egg with a toothpick and a single piece of lettuce as garnish. Oh and the tomato sauce, of course. Not having a choice of how I wanted my egg done irked me somewhat, but it was still nice and runny, so I was content. Don't get me wrong - it was a tasty meal, and a cheap one at that, it just didn't 'wow' me.
