ZERO stars if Yelp allowed it. I started going to Zen Nail Bar because it's right around the corner from my house. They've always been disorganized and nearly impossible to reach by phone, but they did a good job on my nails, so I kept going out of convenience. The last time I tried to make an appointment, I called repeatedly for THREE DAYS with no answer. I finally had to physically drive over, park, and walk inside just to make an appointment. When I politely explained that I had been trying to reach them for days, the woman working there was incredibly rude and actually told me there must be something wrong with MY PHONE. So I left a completely fair Yelp review. I even said they did a great job on nails -- my complaint was that good luck getting an appointment when nobody answers the phone. Instead of simply apologizing, the owner responded defensively and essentially accused me of being dishonest. Had the response been, "We're sorry you had trouble reaching us, we'll work on that," I genuinely would have happily updated my review. Well, today confirmed everything I needed to know. I called to make an appointment and was told they were "so busy" that they couldn't fit me in today. I asked about tomorrow and was told they weren't sure they could fit me in then either. That seemed strange, especially given my previous experience, so after yoga I told a couple friends what happened. One of them said, "Let me call and see." She called the SAME salon, on the SAME day, shortly after I had been told they were too busy to accommodate me. They offered her an appointment for 2:00 PM TODAY. So apparently there was availability -- just not for me. If a business wants to refuse service to a customer because they didn't like an honest Yelp review, that tells you everything you need to know about how they handle criticism and customer service. I didn't lie about them, insult their work, or make anything up. I described my actual experience -- including complimenting the quality of their nail services -- and apparently that was enough to get me blacklisted. The irony is incredible: my original review was about how difficult it was to get an appointment. Their response was to deny the problem, treat me rudely, and then apparently refuse me an appointment while offering one to someone else minutes later. There are far too many nail salons in Los Angeles with talented technicians AND basic professionalism to deal with this. Customer service matters. How you treat people when they have a criticism matters even more. I would not spend a dollar here. read more

Horrible experience. My nails looked like I had done them myself at home--not like I had just left a salon. They were uneven, poorly filed, and very messy. The guy with long hair did my manicure without gloves, and I felt his sticky fingers all over my hands. I was extremely uncomfortable. He also gave me an unpleasant massage that made me feel even more uncomfortable. I do not want a male technician doing my manicure or pedicure, and customers should be asked beforehand if they are comfortable with that. I also felt pressured to leave a tip despite being unhappy with the service. Very disappointing experience. I do not recommend this place to anyone unless you want to ruin your day. read more

I'm normally a super chill client; I never make a fuss about nail trimming, filing, shaping, etc. I literally tell techs to do whatever's easiest, pick the color quickly, and don't complain about the color if I don't really like it after it's put on. I went in for a gel manicure and regular pedicure last Sunday. I called the morning of and was told they couldn't fit me before 11, which was fine. But then they called me back and said they could squeeze me in at 9:30 if I came immediately. I rushed over, got there in like 5 minutes, and they got me done by 10 (as they intended since they had other appts at that time). I tipped 20% and left happy. Less than 24 hours later, my pedicure was already chipped. I came back the next day straight from work to get it fixed (even though I had to leave quickly due to childcare). They wrapped it, but it smudged again. The gel manicure on my fingers also chipped within a couple of days from normal activity. I came back a third time with my own sandals to avoid issues; they fixed it, but the tech was argumentative in front of other customers. Now, a week later, the pedicure is chipped again and the gel mani is completely peeled off. My issue isn't about a refund, it's that no one acknowledged that this is not normal. Instead, I got a defensive response, saying regular polish chips all the time and implying it's my fault. I'm not blaming the techs, it could be the product, etc, but this is clearly unusual. Super disappointing because the salon is close and I wanted to be a regular, but the whole experience left me feeling frustrated. Some understanding and a simple acknowledgment that this wasn't typical would have gone a long way. UPDATE (after the business response): The reply from the salon contains several misleading points. During my original appointment I waited about 25 minutes for my pedicure to dry and wore sandals, so there was no smudge after the first visit, only a chip in the middle of my toe less than 24 hours later. The smudge happened after I came back the second time to fix the chip. If disposable sandals had been offered then (after I kindly asked), the smudge likely wouldn't have happened and I wouldn't have needed to return a third time. At that third visit, when the technician insisted (rudely) that regular polish chips easily, I showed her that my gel manicure had also chipped within 48 hours after normal dishwashing. The photos I posted were taken exactly one week after the appointment, not longer. I was honest about the timeline, so it's frustrating to see the salon imply otherwise rather than, again, simply acknowledging the issue. The defensiveness and lack of accountability have honestly been the most disappointing part of this experience. read more

Hello, My appointment was on May 5. Within days, the acrylic began cracking. The attached photos are dated May 8 and clearly show the acrylic cracking -- not damage to the natural nails themselves. Since then, multiple nails have continued to break, and I have documented several repairs. I understand your policy is to return for repairs, but I was traveling and not in the city, which made repeated visits unrealistic. Acrylic nails should reasonably last at least two weeks before requiring a fill, especially without cracking days after application. What is most disappointing is the refusal to acknowledge that the application may have been done too thin, despite the service being described to me as "strong" and an "amazing deal." A $65 nail service failing within days is unacceptable. I am very happy with the pedicure service I received, but this acrylic application was clearly defective. I am requesting a refund of the $65 nail service by Friday in order to resolve this matter professionally. If this issue is not addressed, I will proceed with disputing the charge through Capital One and will share my documented experience and photos publicly. I would prefer to resolve this directly and professionally by calling them having a tough time with English and basic client service. Horric. Let's you all judge my wife's nails. May 5th was appointment- May 8th seeing the cracks from product breaking off. I think they think the nail techs never make mistakes. But clearly far too thin with filing et. I am so happy with pedi. It was the best experience you could ask for as I called in to check if there was availability at 11:45AM. They happily told me to come in. There was no wait and I got to walk right in. The parking was easy because they are in a big plaza with a big parking lot. Just make sure you ask them to validate. I went in. I sat down. They started me on my pedicure and soon there after they tended to do my gel nails. The older staff was extremely kind and friendly above other places I've been. The older man who did my gel nails was in such a good mood he was humming in a low voice but clearly loud enough for me to enjoy as well. I love glittery nail colors of all kind and some places I get disappointed because the end result isn't as BRIGHT GLISTENING GLIMMER they advertise but this place definitely delivers. I usually call ahead to make sure they have availability since it's a tiny place next to Noah's Bagels/Jamba Juice. Both times I was able to go in right away (week days). This has become my go-to nail spot after one day I was driving home from work and decided i needed my nails done. It was already around 7 and all the places I called wouldn't take my for gel mani and regular pedicure. I called Zen and they said so long as I can get there within 10 minutes, i should be good! I was super excited. Mind you, they close at 8! I got there within the 10, but had to wait a bit because they had other people they were helping and I was last minute, after all. They took me soon after and I had the most amazing experience. They stayed later, way past 8, and I loved how they paid so much attention to my nails even when it was already so late for them. They made sure to get every nook and cranny. Even my conversation was pleasant and made me feel welcome! I kept coming back a few times here and there and switching from the place near my work and here just out of convenience. I came here again today and was helped by Helen. SO amazing!! Helen was soooo nice and was so careful and delicate in all that she did. She made sure my nail beds were super clean and the the gel nail polish had even ends. My mani was very messy, when I told her that, she said my nails were tiny and the lady who was doing my pedi was causing my hands to move!!!!!!!!!
