Golden Hour (iced) and Matcha Donut
    Susan K.

ORIGIN: Matcha enthusiasts MJ and Dan Grullon opened Zen Cha Matcha in 2024. LOCATION: The cafe is located in the relatively new commercial/residential development known as Darien Commons, across from MTA train station. CONCEPT: As the name suggests, the cafe primarily serves matcha-based food and beverage. SERVICE: Orders are placed at a counter and customers' names are called to pick up when ready. EXPERIENCE: I tried a popular drink (iced Golden Hour - $9.50) and a matcha donut on a Monday afternoon. The beverage was slightly sweet, which I appreciated. The selection of pastries was very limited, perhaps because Monday brings fewer customers. TIP: Despite having cafe tables lining one wall and a corner with a traditional tatami mat to dine on, there is no customer bathroom. I had to wash my hands after a morning of shopping in a fast food shop around the corner, and missed seeing my beverage being prepared.

Amazing matcha. So good. Love the whole process of authentic matcha making that goes down here. Love the coconut water one for when I want a boost but feel dehydrated. The staff is lovely and super knowledgeable

It's got a cute vibe inside and the workers are typically always friendly. However, it does take a long time for one matcha to come out even when it's not busy. The strawberry matcha is my fav. The matcha is more bitter than I'd like but, the strawberry puree or jam they use is sweet so it makes up for it

the matcha is amazing here. they have many flavors and i have tried two so far and i love how the matcha flavor is still there. the employees here are very nice. the store itself is very pretty and clean. i love coming here before i go and study.

Really liked the matcha and the quality was great in comparison to other places around. Loved the minimalist and natural atmosphere; would love to go back and try more of the flavors

Zen Cha Matcha is a cafe specializing in matcha elixirs with tea snacks and sweets. They've taken roots in Darien Commons surrounded by other shops and businesses. I spoke to Dan, one of the owners of Zen Cha Matcha on the phone a week before I made a visit trying to obtain more information on their establishment and looking for tea ceremony opportunities. I learned that they have an upcoming bamboo carving class, tomorrow actually and an Ikebana class on Valentine's Day with limited seats available. We arrived more than a couple of hours after opening and they've not even had a chance to re-stock their counter with breads and donuts. They have been receiving guests non-stop since our arrival. The whole cafe is pretty much an experience. You can watch the matcha be prepared in a step by step process before it is added to your beverage to complete the elixir; or while it is being prepared, have a seat at the tatami mat (if vacant) to listen and enjoy the Japanese Lofi Zen Garden playlist playing in the store. Today I am trying a couple of their matcha beverages, Pink Coconut Matcha and Sakura Salted Honey Matcha while being delighted to be at their wonderful shop!! I consumed the former in store and could really taste the coconut water. It was quite refreshing. I took a few sips of the latter tasting the distinct flavor of honey and took it to-go. The donut was coated with matcha glaze and had hints of banana. I also tried the chocolate vegan bread which I loved very much. I was also surprised by the matcha tiramisu. I hadn't expected there would be such a choice. Who knew mascarpone cheese and matcha marries well! There are a few items for sale such as matcha bowls, tea accessories, snacks and more. I am so happy they are in Connecticut and can't wait to return!

It's hard to find a good matcha spot in CT and this place is an exception. Friendly staff. I loved the ambiance and the interior. The snacks were really good too.

My friend and I stopped in this super cute cafe. I got the miso matcha caramel latte and it was so good! Although on the sweeter side, the combo of flavors hit the spot. The cafe itself was also quiet, clean and feeling zen. They even have a traditional table chabudai that you may choose to sit down at and enjoy your tea. I would definitely go back to try their other fun drink concoctions!

My favorite local cafe, wonderful vibe, and the absolutely finest staff and matchas. They use Ceremonial grade tea in everything, including the matcha icing in their baked vegan donuts

The Atmosphere The location here is stunning. It's a beautiful, open space with massive windows that let in a ton of natural light. Inside, there's a good mix of seating--from a cozy sofa to standard tables and chairs. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating in the courtyard is the place to be; it's a perfect environment for chatting with friends or focusing on a laptop. The Drinks In my opinion, the quality of the beverages here is a step above Dunkin' or Starbucks. Yes, the price point is a bit higher, but you truly taste the difference. My go-to order is the iced Fall Oat Boy with honey--it's consistently delicious. I also appreciate that they have plenty of vegan options clearly marked on the menu. The Food & Parking The one area that consistently misses the mark for me is the hot sandwiches. I've tried several, including the Deluxe (turkey sausage and egg on a croissant) and the Vegan Deluxe. While the menu pictures look great, reality is something much different. The heating method they use is a letdown. Instead of a light, flaky, crispy croissant, the sandwiches consistently come out soggy and wet, which is a bummer. Pro-tip: Just a heads up that parking in this area can get pretty tight, so give yourself an extra minute to find a spot!

The staff was welcoming, patient, and conversational, which made my first visit here even better. I ordered their cold brew coffee with oat milk and two shots of vanilla. It had great flavor and the perfect caffeine kick. Based on their recommendation, I also tried the coffee crumb cake, and wow. It was fresh, moist, buttery, with the perfect touch of cinnamon. Honestly one of the best I've had. Parking can be a little tricky when it's busy, but it's absolutely worth it for the experience. I would highly recommend Humbled Coffee House to anyone and will definitely be back, especially for that crumb cake.

We arrived about 20 minutes before closing on Sunday during Memorial Day weekend, which seemed to make the one person working somewhat anxious because she presumably wanted to get her weekend going. I obviously get that, but she could have been a touch less obvious about it as her 5 minute warning was a bit intense. In any event, I would definitely return. 4.25 Stars
