So naturally had to take advantage of the free matcha they were offering with purchase. There was a bit of a line but worth the wait. Finally made it over to Zen Cha Matcha at Darien Commons, and it's a solid addition to the neighborhood. The space itself is beautiful--very minimal with white floors, high vaulted ceilings, and a really open feel. They have a retail wall on the left with some gorgeous ceremonial tea sets imported from Japan that I spent way too much time looking at. As for the drinks, you can tell they aren't cutting corners. They use ceremonial grade matcha from the Mizoguchi family (who apparently have 400 years of history in Kumamoto), and everything is organic. I tried two different vibes: * Golden Hour: This was a standout. It's a mix of coconut, turmeric, ginger, and some warming spices like nutmeg and cardamom. It had a nice little kick from the peppercorn. * Kokuta Hojita Latte: I got this with almond milk. The Japanese black sugar gives it a really deep, toasted sweetness that isn't cloying. The staff was super friendly and nailed the order. Also, side note: they have a modern touchless POS system, which made paying quick and easy. My only gripe--and it has nothing to do with the shop itself--was the seating. It's pretty limited to begin with (a sofa, some small tables, and one Japanese Ceremonial Table). Unfortunately, the "Zen" vibe was a bit ruined by someone hogging the entire ceremonial table with her laptop and books while other people were literally standing around waiting for a spot. LOCATION: The cafe is located in the relatively new commercial/residential development known as Darien Commons, across from MTA train station. CONCEPT: As the name suggests, the cafe primarily serves matcha-based food and beverage. SERVICE: Orders are placed at a counter and customers' names are called to pick up when ready. EXPERIENCE: I tried a popular drink (iced Golden Hour - $9.50) and a matcha donut on a Monday afternoon. The beverage was slightly sweet, which I appreciated. The selection of pastries was very limited, perhaps because Monday brings fewer customers. TIP: Despite having cafe tables lining one wall and a corner with a traditional tatami mat to dine on, there is no customer bathroom. Zen Cha Matcha is a cafe specializing in matcha elixirs with tea snacks and sweets. They've taken roots in Darien Commons surrounded by other shops and businesses. I spoke to Dan, one of the owners of Zen Cha Matcha on the phone a week before I made a visit trying to obtain more information on their establishment and looking for tea ceremony opportunities. I learned that they have an upcoming bamboo carving class, tomorrow actually and an Ikebana class on Valentine's Day with limited seats available. We arrived more than a couple of hours after opening and they've not even had a chance to re-stock their counter with breads and donuts. They have been receiving guests non-stop since our arrival. The whole cafe is pretty much an experience. You can watch the matcha be prepared in a step by step process before it is added to your beverage to complete the elixir; or while it is being prepared, have a seat at the tatami mat (if vacant) to listen and enjoy the Japanese Lofi Zen Garden playlist playing in the store. Today I am trying a couple of their matcha beverages, Pink Coconut Matcha and Sakura Salted Honey Matcha while being delighted to be at their wonderful shop!! I consumed the former in store and could really taste the coconut water. It was quite refreshing. I took a few sips of the latter tasting the distinct flavor of honey and took it to-go. The donut was coated with matcha glaze and had hints of banana. I also tried the chocolate vegan bread which I loved very much. I was also surprised by the matcha tiramisu. Went with a friend on a Monday- had our hot matcha in beautiful ceramic bowls, the energy was lovely. Was VERY happy to bring my dad to try it out. Arrived the next day, and the staff was different. They were blasting drake songs so loud I could barely hear my dad talk to me (that's saying a lot because I play music for a living). the staff seemed very anxious to look at their phones and ended up giving us our drinks in paper cups, without even offering a ceramic "to-stay" option. We had even stood at the front counter while ordering and discussed how it had been served in such a nice ceramic mug the day before, so clearly they were checked out. For an $9 drink, my dad said he wouldn't be interested in returning- and to be honest, I don't know if I would either. Bummer because it could be a really amazing spot. read more

Matcha was good. Baked items were good. Here's the issue: a plain matcha (matcha and water) and one small donut was almost 16.00. I am happy to pay for quality; however, if you charge these prices, please provide a level of service that one would expect with a $16 Matcha tea and small donut. The Matcha tea was served in a plastic cup. No option for real glassware. There was nowhere to really sit. The donut was served in a paper bag, and when I requested a knife to cut to share with my friend, there were no knives so we ended up using our fingers. Also, there was no access to the bathroom. Very rarely have I been in a dining environment, where there is not a bathroom for clientele. read more
