Wow. It isn't often that a place surprises me, Zakes has for sure. Warranting it a rare five stars from me! Don't just drive past - GO IN! Breakfast, brunch and lunch. With many unique and intriguing looking options. Our sandwiches were fresh, well crafted and flavorful. The soup ranks high on the scale of best we have had anywhere while eating out. The interior is a remodeled old home and dining areas are sectioned off in separate rooms of the house, giving the place, a comfy, relaxed, dining atmosphere. Large windows illuminated the room where we ate. Despite the wet weather, the light filled the dining area. The wintered hydrangeas just outside, added charm to my view. The perfect spot for morning tea. Our service was friendly. The staff was attentive, and our experience a pleasant one. Zakes was not what I expected. It was better than what I expected. There was a long line to get in on a Saturday, however, they turn over tables like hot cakes. We were seated within 5-6 minutes and were served fast too. They have all your great brunch items and then some. Don't forget your dessert! What we snagged: -Breakfast Burrito (Filled with egg...was a little cold on the inside) -House Benedict (Flavorful, but again...cold. The toast served with it was kinda stale.) This review is painful for me, so please bear with me. I absolutely love this restaurant. I took my daughter in law for a girl's lunch and we were blown away from the tastes. The roasted duck salad was perfect, savory and beautifully presented. The special was a shrimp pad Thai that was so delicious, fresh and crisp. Had the berry cake, which paralleled the delicious lunch entrees. Kudos to the Zakes half and half, obviously homemade iced tea and fresh squeezed lemonade. Although the parking lot was full, we waited five minutes, promptly seated and very well cared for! You are never rushed. This was the first time I have been here since the loss of my best friend. Despite living 20 miles away, she would drive all the way here to meet me for breakfast because no other place would do for her. I've eaten here scores of times to celebrate so many milestones of my life with so many friends. It IS that kind of place. read more

Zakes is an adorable cafe located in an old stone house. Nice art on the walls. Very busy at lunchtime (and probably breakfast too.) The menu had a broad selection of breakfasts, salads, soups, sandwiches, and even unusual treats like the Vietnamese noodle salad with shrimp. Excellent brewed coffee with refills. We've been here countless times for breakfast but sad to say we don't frequent here anymore. I feel it is overpriced for what you get. Portions are small. We always left kinda feeling hungry still. And breakfast was always well over $40 for just the two of us. I will say that the homefries are THE best thing to eat here. Cooked perfectly with shallots. Coffee is alright too. But everything else is just ok. Food sometimes takes awhile and when it arrives- it's cold. I'd come back maybe if it was cheaper, warmer food, and slightly bigger portions? Our tennis team had a lovely celebratory lunch today at Zake's and everything about it was wonderful. The service was friendly and fast (I had to leave early and they brought out my soup first and the food came out very quickly thereafter). Between us we had the chicken mushroom rice soup, Reuben, BLT, Southern BLT, chicken salad sandwich - and everything came with a side of salad and potato salad (which was delicious). The place is cute with pretty glass designs on the windows and bright light airy rooms. The only downside is the place is not super handicap accessible - our friend on crutches had to hop up and down 5+ steps (there is a ramp, but the ramp leads to a few stairs to get into the restaurant). read more

I went here for lunch on a Monday with a friend who been here years ago. It was pretty packed but we got a table quickly. My friend and I both had the make your own omelette which we both enjoyed. The ingredients were generously portioned and delicious. We both got the home fries which I was pretty excited to find for a weekday lunch. They were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. They come with some fried onions mixed in, and I really enjoyed the potatoes. I saw some reviews about the eggs Benedict on top of toast. I LOVE eggs Benedict, and I would have gotten that, but I saw the people next to me had this and it was on top of what looked like dry toast. That was a no for me. Maybe it's good but I like mine on a muffin. Or, maybe a biscuit. I left with some carrot cake which was only $5 for a generous slice. It was ok. Nothing to rave about but a solid carrot cake for sure. The service was very nice. Our server was quick and pleasant. I don't remember anyone checking in on us, but we didn't need anything so it all worked out. I'd go back if in the Ft Washington area. This place was very good. This was our first time coming here. We had a very short wait which was a welcome surprise since it was a Saturday around noon. My son had the red velvet pancakes and liked it (he said 4/5). I had the braised beef Benedict and it was awesome. Great flavor and eggs were poached perfectly. Service was definitely 100%. Heading home to Boston, we were looking for a yummy breakfast to add some happiness to our journey. We found it at Zakes Cafe. Zakes is a converted home, and it was busy on a Saturday morning, but we were able to get a table for two. We were presented with a menu that offered lots of choices, as well as a page filled with specials. We selected an omelette (swiss cheese, tomato, caramelized onions) and the House Benedict (two poached eggs atop home cured salmon). Both choices were perfect - the omelette was fluffy, cheesy, and fully stuffed. Zakes extensive menu includes vegetarian and vegan choices, and they will make gluten-free pancakes. This cafe also has a collection of delicious looking desserts, highly rated by others, but our breakfast was filling and we couldn't eat another bite. Service was quick and efficient, and we were back on the road in no time. This is an easy, convenient stop for anyone traveling along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, just a couple of blocks from the Fort Washington Interchange (Exit 339). If you are passing by, hop off the Turnpike for some culinary happiness! read more

I was heading to Philadelphia, and I found this cafe on Yelp. The building looked cute and had pretty good reviews was excited to try. Pulled up very cute place and plenty of parking, when you walk in you are seated and given menu. I asked for an ice coffee. However, I was told they have no flavor creamer or flavor syrup. I thought that was odd they offered nothing. We still decided for $3.50 to get an ice coffee. The coffee was okay. I just had suagr and creamer in it. My boyfriend decided to get the chocolate chip pancakes for $11, and I got the side of smoked chicken apple sausage for $4.50. As you can see from the photos we got what is frozen pancakes with some chocolate chips on top...I couldn't believe they charged $11 bucks for that, the only thing that saved it was the side of caramel sauce that was served with it. My sasuage was good but to only get one sasuage just split in half then half again and trying to say is 2. I probably would not stop back if we did would try something different. read more

Been coming here for 2 decades now and it's still the best breakfast and lunch spot in the area! Marlene and her team create such a warm and welcoming environment. You can tell this is a labor of love from the moment you arrive and see the impeccable landscaping and the beautiful flowers. And things only get better from there! The freshly brewed iced tea is a delightful and unique blend you won't find anywhere else. It's so good we now try to brew a copycat recipe at home, but it's never as good as the original! It's the quality, creativity and consistency of the food that truly makes Zakes a 5 star experience and keeps us coming back again & again. Been here hundreds of times and I can count on one hand the number of times a dish wasn't perfect and each of those times, they corrected it immediately. Over the years we've tried almost everything on the menu and you really can't go wrong but some of our personal favorites are: -Honey & Lemon Pancakes -Barbacoa Benedict -Grilled Lamb & Eggplant Salad -Barbecued Duck Quesadilla -Southwest Club -Crispy Lemongrass Calamari Salad -Lump Crab Sandwich -Grilled Duck Salad And make sure to save room for dessert! Before "Zakes Cafe" was a thing, the owners got their start with "Zakes Cakes". And let's just say they have not forgotten their roots. My husband and I often go to Zakes and decided to take my mother there while she was in town. My mom is 76 years old with an extensive history of cardiac events. While dining there today, my mom experienced an episode and I needed to call emergency services. Our waitress, who I am 99% sure is the owner, was completely inappropriate in the way she responded to my mother's emergency. She told the paramedics and police that they needed to move out of the way and that them performing emergency care on my mother was against health code. I thought I was being overly sensitive given the circumstances, but even the paramedics and police were appalled and said they would never dine there again. I hate to "blast" a small, local, family business, but this was unacceptable. My mother was literally slumped over the table with a dangerously low BP and all this woman cared about was getting tables sat and food served. I know I will not be returning. read more
