I have been here twice in the last 2 weeks. I can with friends for cocktails and pizza- we each ordered a different one and had enough left to swap leftovers and take a bunch home! The burrata appetizer was good. The atmosphere at night is wonderful-- airy, buzzing with a good energy that you can tell people are enjoying themselves. The decor is modern and a touch European? Then I went with my husband for late lunch and cocktails. We split the meatball appetizer with the Vodka sauce and it was delicious as well as a pizza! We were big fans. The cocktails were also fantastic and refreshingly unique. Overall, I could see myself coming here for a lot of reasons. And Juan, my server both times was 5/5 as well. Highly recommend! read more

We had the best time at Za! My mom, sisters, and I went for a girls' dinner to celebrate my sister's engagement, and it was such a fun night. The atmosphere was lively and upbeat, and we were laughing the entire evening. The food was incredible. The beet salad was hands down one of the best salads I've ever had, and we shared the hot honey pizza, which was delicious. Pro tip: add some of the beet salad on top of the pizza. So good! Since it was Wine Wednesday, bottles over $40 were half off, so we shared a delicious Sauvignon Blanc. We also ordered two desserts, and they generously comped one to help celebrate my sister's engagement, which was such a thoughtful touch!! Our server, Ally, was absolutely wonderful. I've been to za many times each visit is different. Sometimes.. spot on everything comes out fresh and hot and sometimes not. My suggestion is for za to be a restaurant that when your pizza is done it comes out immediately to the table .. serve it fresh out of oven. Last night my pizza clearly sat under the heat lamp for a while.. it wasn't hot it even looked liked cold pizza when it was placed in front me. I was really excited to try Za, but I am hoping I just caught them on a bad day. We had a 6pm reservation and they told us they were running a little behind and it would be a couple minutes. We didn't get sat until 6:25pm, which I felt like defeated the purpose of having a reservation in the first place. I saw them say the same thing to at least 3 other groups, so I think they overbooked quite a few tables. When we were finally sat, the first thing I noticed was the cute aesthetic. It was very well decorated and you could tell they put a lot of thought into it. Unfortunately, with that aesthetic came a lot of tile on the floors, walls, etc., which absorbs no sound. It was so loud in there I really had to raise my voice for my husband to hear me. They had a few things hanging from the ceiling to absorb sound, so you could tell they were trying, but it was not working too well. Additionally, the drink menu didn't have prices, so we opted not to get drinks. Our server, Mariah, was exceptional. She was super upbeat and attentive and did a great job. The food itself was also very good. We got Parmesan fries as an appetizer to hold us over and each got pasta. I had the spicy rigatoni and it was delicious and a huge portion. I probably took half of it home with me. It did take us awhile to get our food. Our reservation was at 6pm, we were sat at 6:25pm, and we received our entrees at 7:10pm, so I'm glad we got an appetizer in the meantime. I thought it would be impolite to ask, so I didn't say anything or complain about the wait, but I was a little shocked they didn't offer to comp us something small like a dessert or offer to take a small percentage off the bill for making us wait 25 minutes when we had a reservation and then our food took a long time to come out. I feel like that would've been best practice. I'm not sure our server knew how long we waited to even be sat. The hostesses, servers, and bussers were truly all so nice. After my first time visiting Za with friends, I knew I had to bring the family and it definitely won't be our last visit. We came in craving pasta but ended up ordering a mix of appetizers, pizza, and pasta. We started with the brussels sprouts and calamari, both of which were excellent. The kids had the Alfredo pasta, while we enjoyed pizza and lasagna, everything was delicious. The service was as fast and attentive. Cute restaurant however the main complaint I have is how loud it was - the way the restaurant is set up, everything echoes inside meaning of it's busy, it'll probably really hard to hear whoever's sitting across the table from you. Made a reservation for Dinner before a show at Sunset Playhouse. (definitely recommend this if going before a show as they get super busy) Was a nice date atmosphere. We DID have to use our flashlight to read the menu well and noticed others did too but it happens, when you're old lol The server was super friendly and attentive. Food came out pretty quickly considering how busy they were. And I was very impressed by the portions. I added the chicken to my pesto pasta as I worried about it being filling enough, but I would have absorbed fine without it. The flavor was great, but definitely garlic. (That's on me I never think about that ahead of time and need to start carrying mints lol) The goat pizza was delicious. Flavors I've never had on pizza. And I'm not the biggest wood fire fan but this crust was really good. I didn't try the garlic bread because I just didn't have room but my husband loved it! I made Valentine's Day reservations for Za. They get busy pretty quickly so I recommend making a reservation. The restaurant has a very nice date atmosphere. I was fortunate that my party was sat near the large pizza oven. It was awesome to see the pizzas get baked in real time. For appetizers, we got the calamari. The calamari had well seasoned batter and was a nice golden color. The calamari is accompanied by 2 sauces-- a fresh tomato sauce and a lemon aioli. I preferred the lemon aioli since it provided a nice twang to the calamari. For entrees, we ordered the spicy rigatoni vodka and the chicken alfredo. I must admit that our humble party of two was surprised by the size of the pasta dishes. Given that each dish is over $20, it's nice to see that the portions are ample. Both entrees came fresh out the kitchen! The spicy rigatoni is truly spicy. The color and the spice level match appropriately. The chicken alfredo has a good amount of chicken in the pasta. You won't be skimped on your protein. The pasta had us so filled we passed on dessert this time. For drinks, we ordered the limoncello margarita and the espresso martini. Both drinks were strong (compliments to the bartender). The limoncello margarita wasn't overwhelmingly bitter. It was a nice balance of bitter and sweet. The espresso martini is not a creamy martini. The base for their espresso martini is Kahlua so it has a bolder, robust coffee flavor. If you like a creamier espresso martini (usually lighter in color since the base is Bailey's) then I would pass on this one. The service was friendly and quick. I loved that there was a live singer for the night. For a party of two, we spent $95. So, you'll likely spend almost $50/person. 10/10 will come here again to try the pizza. read more

If you are looking for a lovely experience with excellent food, the new restaurant that has opened in Elm Grove "Za" Is a great choice. Elm Grove was truly lacking in quaint restaurants. We have been there a couple of times now. It is modern Italian inspired. Our service and food were always spot on. Lovely decor. Large open overhead garage door type windows. Comfortable seating. Amazing pizza oven. The only downside I can think of is, it is a bit loud. The acoustics, because of all the hard surfaces,do not absorb into anything. So if you're looking to have a quiet,romantic conversation, this may not be the place for you. It is filled with families, young children, and adults. Za is a wonderful addition to Elm Gove and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. Also, their pizza is amazing! read more

My colleagues and I stopped into ZA for a happy hour turned dinner. Although, I don't think they offer any actual happy hour pricing. We each started with a cocktail. While they don't have a mocktail menu, my coworker was able to get one if their signature cocktails with no alcohol which was great. We also ordered the brussels sprouts, burrata, and zucchini fries as appetizers. The brussels sprouts were very good. The burrata and zucchini fries were fine but nothing unique or overly impressive. For my meal, I enjoyed the funghi pasta and other colleagues enjoyed the Zissy and Goat Pizzas. All in all we were all happy with our meals. The crust on the pizzas looked great. The ambiance is really wonderful, the place is well decorated and played great Italian music. Our server was also perfectly attentive. My biggest issue is that the pricing is just a bit higher than I feel like it should be. For one pasta and one drink (plus tip) my total was over $50. I don't think I'd be in a hurry back to pay that much. But overall, the food was good so as long as money isn't an issue I do recommend! Would love to see a happy hour menu, too. read more

Checked out this new spot in Elm Grove with a friend after seeing it advertised by their sister restaurant, Zisters, which I'm a fan of. We went on a Thursday evening about 7pm and it was busy! My friend was able to snag us a spot before I arrived in the main dining area. The atmosphere is modern, yet welcoming --perfect for a date or a night out with a friend. We opted for the eggplant strips to start off our meal. They were fresh and good, but the serving size was underwhelming. For dinner we each opted for a pizza of our own. We both were big fans of them! We ended up taking about half home. The pizza was great and had fresh ingredients! The crust was amazing...I could eat that alone with marinara sauce. My family and I have gone to Za's since they opened. It's true it is loud, so we always go early. We had dinner reservations at 4:30 with several large tables sat around 5:30. at 6:30 we were asked to leave as tables are only reserved for 2 hours and we had been there 2 1/2 hours. Traveling regularly from our home on the East Coast to Milwaukee on family business in Brookfield & Wauwatosa over the past year or so, I'd gone to Za a half-dozen times -- on one or two occasions with my wife and local relatives, and 3 or 4 times when I was traveling solo, to sit at the bar in the evening with a book or newspaper, have a cocktail and order dinner. I'd previously had different pasta dishes and pizza there. It had been a good experience... until one night earlier this week. After settling in with a rye whiskey on the rocks and reading for a while, I ordered the salmon... listed on the menu as 'Pan-seared salmon cooked with rosemary & garlic. Served with creamy mashed potatoes & our roasted broccolini.' When the dish was eventually placed in front of me, I was greeted with a salmon filet and a tangle of broccolini off to the side, on a big white plate. I told the bartender that I hadn't gotten what was on the menu, and what I'd ordered. "They forgot my mashed potatoes," I said, politely pushing the plate toward her. "Can you get that for me?" Her reply: "We don't serve that any more." What?! I told her that for people who really, really like mashed potatoes with a meal like that, their mix-up was a real disappointment. Why was it still on the menu? "We're going to be changing that," she said. I told her I was one of those people who craved mashed potatoes, and expected them when I ordered them, and the restaurant's bait & switch was a big deal. I suppose I could have sent the incomplete dinner back and asked her to take it off my bill, but I hadn't eaten all day and was staving, and after the cocktail and a pint of beer after that -- still largely untouched so I could enjoy it with the salmon and broccolini AND MASHED POTATOES -- I was needing the meal. I ate the salmon but was only able to choke down a bit of the unexpectedly woody, super fibrous broccolini. Living in the Italian / Mediterranean restaurant-heavy NYC area, and eating out in Europe on many trips there, I'd always had that wonderfully bitter-sweet vegetable nicely prepared, tender and delectable, and really loved it. And I cook it at home -- not rocket science, if you know what you're doing. This was absolutely inedible -- the traditional Italian side dish that this Italian establishment had proudly advertised as 'our' broccolini. That was exacerbated by the fact that charred sprigs of rosemary that had presumably been pan-roasted with the salmon were woven into the broccolini... which you couldn't have detected until you were struggling to chew them. Have you ever tried to eat charred stalks of rosemary? Ridiculously woodier than the ridiculously woody broccolini. Anyway, getting ripped off on the non-existent 'creamy mashed potatoes' and getting bark-like broccolini mixed with charred rosemary stalks really got to me. It had been a particularly long, tough day, and I needed the comfort and sustenance of what the menu promised... and what I'd expected when I had ordered it. I was offered no suggestion that she'd gladly take 1/3 off the bill for delivering just 2/3 of the my dinner, or comping me entirely. How low-rent is that? I finished up and scrawled on the check that I was really turned off by the scammy menu, and the partial meal, and what amounted to a non-explanation, and the dreadfully inedible side dish, and no offer of a make-good... and that I would not be coming back. And I won't. Sound like I'm overreacting? Sorry, but I long ago got to the point where I was sick and tired of spending a king's ransom when we went out, and coming away with an unsatisfying -- or worse -- experience. And hey, why is the salmon with(out) mashed potatoes the only item on their online version of the menu that doesn't have a price listed? Expectant diner, beware. Who knows what you'll end up with, and how much of it will actually appear the plate, when you order dinner at Za. read more

We tried ZA twice. The first time was during the opening and it was chaotic, loud and pretty decent. Then we tested it once again. The service was excellent. In fact, that was seriously outstanding. Our waitress was as considerate as possible. 5 stars to her. The appetizers of fried melanzane and garlic bread were tasty and rather large. No complaints. However, when it came to the ZA itself, it was...wanting. The crust was a bitter yeasty tasting bit of meh. The cheese was not prime mozzarella. The tomato sauce was acidic. When I made reservations I was asked if there was any special occasion. I wrote, yes, it was a birthday. We were greeted by zero recognition of this. Nice spot for pizza and pasta in Elm Grove. A long wall opens up to the outside, allowing lots of fresh air into the restaurant when the weather is nice. The service is excellent, and the ambience is nice, apart from the fact the place is annoyingly loud (even with a wall of open windows.) People were practically screaming at each other across tables, which doesn't (in my opinion) make for a pleasant, relaxing dining experience. The Spanza pizza was very good (Mozzarella Cheese, Pepperoni, Sausage.) The Granch (Mozzarella, Garlic Cream Sauce, chicken) was tasty. My friend did not like the Cacio e Pepi. We love Zisters so was excited to try their new spot. Got seated right away, went around 5:30. Our server was very attentive and had great recommendations. I love when a server recommends and has good reasons. The vibe - The Brussel Sprouts were really good. I'd get them again. The fried eggplant fries wasn't the best and wouldn't get again. Some people might like. The pizza - The Grover was delicious but you got to love garlic which I do. The pasta - Short Rib Pappardelle was good. The meat could be seasoned a bit more to make the dish pop. Chicken Alfredo - my kids split the main dish. Was great and appreciated them splitting it. Now the critique - when bringing out the Brussel Sprouts there wasn't a serving spoon. We ask for one and they brought out a small spoon. Would recommend a serving spoon with that dish.
