Knowledgeable, helpful, and honest. I called awhile back to research an entrance chandelier repair/replacement options (candlestick contacts were cracked on 9 out of 12). Spoiler Alert -- this guy is great, just like everyone else says. I bought an antique lamp on eBay in a style I had been coveting. When it arrived, I saw several things wrong with it, mainly that it was askew on its base, bulb socket seemed pretty wobbly with questionable cardboard to hold it in place, etc. Took it to Yury at 10 am when he opened (easy to find metered parking nearby that hour). He noticed quite a few other things that were wrong: on/off switch was in the back; cord worn and unlikely safe; wrong harp, etc. He was patient with me, asked intelligent questions, gave me an estimate and said it would be ready by 2-3 pm. Called me at 12:30 to pick it up. It was perfect! He also recommended the ideal shade, even asking how deep the bookcase was on which the lamp would sit. Love this shop. Wow I am so incredibly impressed with Yury's. I brought in 100 year old fixtures that had been inexpertly ripped out of my walls and he restored them with beautiful care and attention to detail. My parents are true homemakers and their taste in furnishings shows it. For our entrance lobby and dining room, they purchased chandeliers from Hong Kong, shipping them here to install. After trying Amazon and a home improvement store, I was unsure of whether those were the correct bulbs. I then remembered coming here several years ago in helping a friend with her chandelier, successfully dining replacements. Coming in on a Tuesday afternoon, the store was empty and, as the door jingles sounded, a gentleman came out to help me. I handed James my burnt bulb and he checked whether they had this (thanks for sharing those quips about our post March 2020 world and the NY Times writings). In searching, he suggested that, given that my parents' chandelier was likely a European set, I purchase compatible bulbs and using an American to European attachment that should work. He prefaced this by telling me that, in buying these, they could not be returned or exchanged after purchase. I bought a few and brought them home to try the next day and sadly it did not work. I then tried a few days later without using the attachment and, for now, it works. This is a good source to find specialty items that you won't at the normal home improvement or hardware stores especially for lighting items. read more

Yesterday, my husband and I stopped by Yury's to see if he could replace the cord on an old Hollywood Regency/Chinoiserie accordion fan lamp. I had accidentally dropped a heavy water bottle on it, breaking the cord in half. Yury was very friendly and helpful, and he was transparent about pricing. His estimate for just replacing the cord was so reasonable that we also decided to have him update the lightbulb socket and add velvet underneath the lamp to prevent it from scratching our furniture. He completed all the work in under three hours, and we picked it up later in the afternoon. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and plan to bring in another old lamp to have the wiring updated. read more

HE REPAIRS TIZIO LAMPS! While replacing a bulb in a Tizio lamp, the bulb broke. I quickly went to Yury's - what a wonderful man! He quickly removed and replaced my bulb for minimal cost. I also had an original Tizio at home that stopped working years ago. I could never find anyone that would repair without costing a fortune. I asked Yury if he worked on them, and he did. If you want assurance that you're dealing with a proprietor who is honest and competent, this is the place for you. Our first experience with Yury was about 10 years ago when we brought in a lamp that wasn't working. He fiddled with it there on the spot and did something to get it to work. He could have charged us, or even kept the thing and claimed there was some sort of expensive issue before returning it to us fixed, but he did not. After that experience, we were eager to give him our business. When we finally got fed up with a recessed lighting fixtured in which new bulbs were constantly burning out quickly, which we'd tried to have fixed multiple times--by the place where it had been purchased initially many years before--we took it to Yury's. He had a theory as to the problem but told us that the fix wouldn't be cheap, and he wasn't certain it would even work. We went for it, he fixed it, and we haven't had a problem with it since. Well worth the money and he demonstrated his competence, able to fix something that other professionals could not. Today was our third experience with Yury, and it was a repeat of the first one. One socket of a multi-socket lamp had stopped working. We took it in and, again, he fiddled with it right there in the store. Lo and behold, he got it working and explained there had been some issue with the contacts. He did not charge us, and we left. But I walked back in after thinking about it and tried to give him $10 for his efforts, but he refused to take it. I told him he could have ripped us off, kept the lamp, told us there was a bigger problem, and charged a lot, so he should take the money for his honesty. But he would not take it. Yury has won our allegiance and trust, and we will continue to use him for all future lighting repairs as long as he's in business. We also are eager to explore new-lamp purchases with him the next time we're in the market. read more

A friend gave me a beautiful shell lampshade. It was missing some parts and I went to a big box lamp store to find them. They referred me to Yury's. He was so friendly and loved my handmade lamp shade as much as I did. In a day he created the framework and even the correct bulbs so as not to burn the shade so I could mount this on my dining room ceiling. We bought a lamp from a thrift store, and it had a plug that was missing a ground wire. Yury took in in and fixed it for $60, and did a complete revamp of this lamp, making the replaced wire look apart of the lamp itself. We bought a second desk lamp that was missing a switch knob for the bulb, and he was willing to search through his spare parts for a replacement, without charge.
