Prices, however, are very high, too high for the fare and location. The menu is limited to a single page of dishes - though I did go at lunch so maybe this is different at night? We ordered Rendang - which was very tender. The flavour was stronger than I liked with dark soy perhaps? But still totally delicious. My mum and son enjoyed it very much. The roti's and Curry's were excellent both in terms of value and taste. Dumplings were fresh tasting. Hawker Chicken was super yum too. $49 for 3 people including a glass of wine! Char Kway Teow was yummy too. Gobbled up by my partner when we got home.

Here we found a new strip mall and New World market. To our surprise we also spotted this new place called Aruma Malaysian Restaurant. Mostly Malaysian hawker style meals ranging from the local favorites of Nasi Lemak or Char Kuay Teow or Roti Canai, the place was spanking new at just about a month old. We had to stop to try the Lobak and Otak Otak - both not too common here in NZ but making a showing amongst a few of the Malaysian restaurants here. The Lobak was great with a soft juicy filling and a light and crispy skin. The Otak Otak was firm and with lots of fish. Not as soft as I would have liked but good all the same. We also tried the Teh Tarik Ais. In all the ambiance was trendy and the service was great. Would definitely visit again!

Straight away you notice the difference - this place has made an effort with their decor! Specialising in Malaysian & Indonesian cuisine, the waitstaff at Golden Tulip are happy to help and recommend dishes. The menu is extensive, as with a lot of Dominion Rd eateries! With classics such as Char Kuey Teow, Mee Goreng, Beef Rendang and Nasi Lemak, the closest you'll find to a Laksa is Curried Laksa Noodles. We plumped for a Mongolian Beef hotplate, Assam Prawns and a Hainanese Chicken. Each dish was a very good example of it's type, without being mind-blowing. The prawns were particularly good; plump & juicy with loads of the salty, sweet Assam sauce. The servings were huge, so we ended up taking the leftovers home. Golden Tulip & it's close Dominion Road neighbours Cinta and Santhiya's are giving Malaysian food the reputation it deserves. We'll definitely be back to work our way through the menu!
