I'm the type of person who always has a hard time talking about myself. My resume before working with Tim was a laundry list of jobs I've held back to when I was in college. My experience with Your Next Jump was mixed, but ended well. On the positive side, I think my resume turned out pretty good, and it's definitely an improvement over what I had done on my own. Also, because I was dissatisfied with the process and especially the time it took, Tim went above and beyond, and actually waived the fees. It was a real solid move on his part. My complaint had been mostly about the time it took to get edits back and some lack of follow-through on commitments made by YNJ. This all happened in April 2017. Once I initiated service and sent my resume for review and edits, I didn't hear anything and had to follow up twice before getting a revised version two weeks later. The changes that were made simply shouldn't take two weeks to do. It was a couple of hours worth of work, max. But there were a few more rounds of edits still to be done that also took too long, and in the end it took a month to get a version I could comfortably call 'final'. Unemployed and worried about cash flow, I couldn't afford to wait a whole month to start applying to jobs. And then it took a while longer to get my LinkedIn account touched up by YNJ, so six weeks in total, though some of the delays in the last two weeks were on me. I also was frustrated with the in-person meeting with Tony. He was only available on weekday evenings (not weekdays, and not weekends), and only near George Mason, which is a nightmare to get to during rush hour from other parts of the greater DC area. Tim had told me I'd have an hour and a half in-person with Tony, but Tony had only scheduled a one-hour window. I was 35 mins late due to traffic, but instead of having the remaining 55 mins I had expected, I got 25 minutes of Tony's time before his next client came. The experience left me feeling that YNJ is a side-gig for Tim and Tony, which I'm sure it is, and for my experience, it showed. That said, Tim heard these complaints and waived my fees entirely, so really I can't complain. He asked me to share my story on Yelp. read more

I am very impressed with the service I received from YNJ. I cannot speak to how effective their service is for mid-career professionals or those with 20 or 30 years of experience, but for me, the work that Ellim, Tony, and Tim accomplished was great, because I'm in a place where I need to get my foot in the door, and I was presenting myself the wrong way. My resume was less of a sales document, and more of a list of job duties. A list of job duties might suffice if you're aiming for a janitor position (which I was for five years), but for anything else, it's really important to have a sales-oriented approach to self presentation, when it comes to employers. I feel that my resume and LinkedIn profile are much more concise and impactful than they were before. Pretty much, my resume looks the exact opposite now of what it looked like before. The relevant accomplishments and competencies that relate to my intended career are listed at the top, while more recent roles that are less relevant are listed at the bottom. While I understand the critiques of resumes that don't follow the reverse chronological format, especially by employers who think that the job seeker has something to hide, it is true that listing your most recent experience at the top of the resume is not always the best strategy if you're applying for a totally different industry. In my case, I have experience in the field that I am applying for, but my experience is further in the past than my most recent roles. What is a person to do? I feel like there is a way to present a resume that is truthful and honest, and at the same time, not too "damning" for a person who is looking to change industries. The truth is, if you don't present well on paper and online, in a way that is SPECIFIC to the role you're applying for, you're NOT getting an interview to begin with. I feel YNJ helped me to present myself and my experience in a way that is "entry level" (in a good way), a way that will entice employers to want to know more about me. Since I am aiming for an entry-level position, and have a college degree, I feel my experience is more than contained in one page. I learned a lot about resume writing just from seeing the finished product that the team put together, and my LinkedIn is much more relevant to the sorts of jobs I want to apply for. read more
