    Great view of London
    Megan V.

This review will be a bit different since I haven't attended the cafe to eat any soup, sandwiches, or salad, but instead we hosted a business event. Let's just say, if you have under 60 people and you need a beautiful, local spot, book it here ASAP. If you are not aware, You Made it Cafe helps youth in the community learn new skills which eventually may lead to having secure and stable jobs when they are ready. Every year our company sponsors a national conference and it just so happens that this year it was located in London. We get a chance to host a dinner for our clients and some guests so we wanted to choose a place that meant something to our community instead of taking them to a fancy restaurant. We work with Youth Opportunities Unlimited in another capacity and we know they host their own dinners, would they host one for an outside business? We were able to get a hold of someone right away at the cafe and we began the planning process. Chef Ricardo was given a price range per plate and came up with 3 great meals that our attendees could choose from. They were fantastic. We had a warm spinach salad with pear dressing and walnuts, chicken with a wonderful sauce, beef short ribs, and a flour-less chocolate cake for desert. All wonderfully prepared, fresh, and tasty. We were excited that they just opened a rooftop terrace on the top floor so we decided to also host a wine and cheese before dinner to show off the great 360 degree view of London, and their soon to be gardens where they will grow veggies for the cafe. Kathryn, the business development leader was crucial in planning our event. She ensured everything was taken care of from the entertainment to the special occasion permit we had to apply for. When it came time for the big day, everything went so smooth. Our attendees had perfect weather for the terrace so they got to see amazing views of One London Place and downtown, but also the more industrial areas like the Labatt Brewery. They presented the cheese on the cutting boards they sell downstairs as well as the jams that they prepare and sell. The apple butter was so good, I kept going back for more. We ensured that our event included some of the youth who were involved with Youth Opportunities Unlimited. The guitar player and singer on the rooftop was OUT of this WORLD. The talent he had, WOW, and he was at OUR party. Kathryn also organized to have another youth say a few words before dinner to explain to our clients what YOU means to those who attend the program. The feedback I received for this event was so unbelievably positive. For my first time ever planning something of this scale, I think I really got to hand it to Kathryn, Chef Ricardo, and the team at the You Made it Cafe. They made everything so easy and it went so smooth, I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

If there's one thing I like as much as food (or maybe even more than food), it's socially conscious businesses and organizations. YOU Made it Cafe is a social enterprise run by Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU). They aim to provide youth with opportunities for training and career building through servicing the community with their yummy assortment of cafe goods. Open M-F from 7:30am-2:30pm (&full catering 7days/wk), the cafe is a great example of how local businesses can empower those in the community in which they serve through community economic development. The service is great and friendly - I was greeted by a couple of hellos and open smiles. When I asked for recommendations, the staff knew what to say. I popped in for a quick snack on a Thursday afternoon and got an iced chai ($3.75) and a butter pecan square ($3.50). They were delicious - the iced chai was nice and smooth, not too sweet, a bit creamier than I expected but still good. The square was nicely textured - the filling was smooth, on the sweeter side, and creamy with crunchy pecans to complement each bite. The base of the square wasn't dry, it was a good balance for the filling. I need to try their heavier items like the Biting Pig grilled panini (pulled pork, cheddar, caramelized onions, house-made jalapeno mayo - $8) and the Peta Pita (grilled pear & eggplant, roasted sweet potatoes, arugula, & candied shellots - $6.50). I really want more people to know about this place - not only is what they're doing awesome, the quality of food and service make it a great cafe (to study in too - it doesn't get too loud). For students who frequent the Via and Greyhound, make this your stop for a take-home snack during your next departure and arrival. You won't regret it. Have a l'il bit of social and delicious good!

Honestly love the YOU Made It Cafe. Came here for a planned corporate team lunch and it was delicious (amazing mac and cheese).

Honestly love the YOU Made It Café. Came here for a planned corporate team lunch (17 of us) and it was delicious. Seriously amazing mac and cheese, and the staff were super friendly and helpful. And my favourite part about this cafe is that it's a social enterprise. All proceeds from the café are reinvested into our London community and the services of Youth Opportunities Unlimited. A real - feel good - breakfast place.

I think it's important to note right off the top that the You Made It Cafe is a social enterprise helping youth in the community learn valubale new kitchen and social skills which hopefully leads to future employment. They actually have a number of initiatives of which the cafe is only one. And while it only happens on occasion as whether permits - I would be remiss if I did not strongly recommed the rooftop barbeques as they are absolutely not to be missed. Now ... onto the cafe itself. The menu I suppose is somewhat limited but I never struggle to find something to eat. Think breakfasts, sandwiches, soups and salads - that kind of fair. Highlights for me include the pulled pork and grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches paired with a caesar salad. I cannot describe why I find their casaer salad different from all others - but I do really like it. They have a selection of coffees, teas and cold drinks and for $10 you will enjoy a delicious and satisfying lunch - which I think my visits have been limited to thus far. The staff are almost always super nice and while they can be a little perplexed at times that is truly part of it's charm for me. They also host a monthly dinner where they bring in a local chef and all the proceeds go to the charity. I'll sheepishly admit I haven't attended one yet but many people who's opinion I trust have raved about them. In short, if you're downtown and looking for someplace for lunch I would certainly recommend this place. A good meal and doing good at the same time is a win/win/win combination - a true happy meal!

I started off with a kyoto fog, which was a matcha green tea, while my boyfriend got a mocha macchiato. We came here to study, but the tables are quite tiny, so we ended up moving to a long table against the wall for some more room. There is free wifi as well, so feel free to ask for that. All the employees are extremely kind. The place stayed pretty busy throughout lunch hours. We ended up ordering crepes as a snack. The batter is a little crispier than I'm used to, and I would've loved to see some savoury options, but the banana crepe was delicious with triple chocolate and peanut butter ice cream and a generous amount of whip cream. I look forward to seeing how this shop develops, as it has a great deal of potential.

Now that they've changed over to a cafe style themselves and since I was watching a friend's cats in the neighbourhood it was the perfect excuse to pop on in. The narrow space is lined on one side with a wooden counter and a row of stools while the other has shelves lined with ready to go packaged tea in what seems like an endless variety. The narrow space reminded me strangely of record stores of yesteryear. Yes, I'm aware vinyl is back and trendy once more but this is something only us old folks will likely get a vibe of. Anyways I knew that I wanted a black tea as that was the variety that I was currently out of stock at home. With a taste profile in mind I was greeted shortly after entering and told the young woman what I was looking for, she introduced me to a few I hadn't had before but once she hit me with the maple I was sold! It was exactly the thing I was looking for. She also informed me they made a gelato out of it. Umm...what? HELLO!! So of course I had to get that too and let me tell you I could have cried it was that good! I took my purchases to go as well as a lovely Iced Thai tea, for those who have never had it you must like a strong black tea flavour to fully enjoy it (which I do!) Guess my only con was while trying to enjoy my gelato on their patio before heading off I was sort of sketched out by some of surrounding going-ons (so not their fault!). That said it was still worth the visit and I will be back to try the crepes which several people were ordering as I was there and looked amazing... I'll reserve the last star for that to see if they are as good as they looked.

It seemed as though the daily specials are available until they sell out; perhaps a regular diner could confirm this. They looked good, but we were late, so we settled for pickings from the standard menu. Options include soups, salads ($4.65-$10), sandwiches and burgers ($9.50-$13), lunch bowls ($11-12.50) and all-day breakfast (actually just breakfast and lunch, so it's a pretty short day!). The beverage selection is extensive, including coffee, tea, smoothies, sodas that I haven't seen elsewhere in London, iced coffee, juices and more. All of the coffee and tea selections were under $5. There is a self-serve water station which is a nice touch; probably easier on staff, too. I appreciated their attempts to avoid single-use utensils and dinnerware. The only disposable waste were the paper napkins and the receipt. Food came out quickly and it really hit the spot. Good-sized portions were tasty and as described. Come out and support a business that supports the community!

So humble and comforting!…read more I was skeptical at first being that it is located in Masonville Mall (not the food court - stand alone location in new part of the mall) but having gone a few times now I have to say it has become one of my favourite places to grab a quick lunch and coffee. The atmosphere is bright and inviting, comfortable chairs and tables (it can get quite crammed if it's busy), the staff is always wonderful in my experience, and the food is always so fresh and delicious. To top it off they have an abundance of drink options as well as pastries for any sweet cravings. I recommend the Aroma Special salad!

Horrible over priced coffee, even worse service!…read more I needed just a regular (read: not fancy) coffee while waiting fir my daughter to finish work to go shopping in Masonville Mall. I had heard decent things about this place (other than the high prices for mediocre coffee/beverages). I just wanted a dark roast, so asked for a medium (16oz) coffee - the darked roast they had on tap. I got my coffee and sat drinking it until my daughter joined me. I watched a man sitting at the table next to me complain about his sandwich (looked like turkey and lettuce and tomato on homemade, thick bread. It was mostly bread, and he was complaining aboutbthat as well as how they used a few pieces of romaine for lettuce to bulk it up. However it was all romaine spine which is nit nice on a sandwich. I felt bad for the guy. My daughter showed up amd I was finishing my coffee which was in a paper to-go cup in case I needed to take it with me. I went to take about my third last sip and almost spit it out all over the table as my mouth filled with coarse coffee grounds. I am not talking about one or two. I am talking about a mouthful. I took my cup to the counter and waited for 3 minutes for the 2 girls behind the counter to finish their chat nefore acknowledging me. I asked to speak to a manager. Anoyher plain clothed young woman sitting at the coffee counter came over and said the manager was busy (I could see the manager in their office with thwir door open and a friend at the door chit chatting...they were busy personally, not professionally. Whatever. I showed this girl my teeth which were filled with grounds and the cup and said I wanted a refund so I could buy a bottle of water to rinse my mouth out. She was all defensive with no apology...just said "someone probably put the filter in wrong". That may well have been true. But I said that an apology and a refund woukd be approproate. And again, she defensively said "I have apologized to you over and over" in a really loud voice that did not warrant the manager to bother with us still, and the girl behind the counter thumped the money on the counter and they BOTH turned their back to me. Super horrible coffee and experience. I wouldn't waste my time on this place. There are at least 3 other coffee options in the mall.

The first impression of décor and display, it is clean, intentional, thoughtful and cozy. We perused the menu and I decided on the fig and cheese croissant, accompanied by an espresso martini. We found our seats at a table and I could not take my eyes off the artistic desserts on display. One in particular was a tree ornament, made of cake, it was shiny and beautiful, almost too pretty too eat. Almost. My only regret is that I didn't enjoy one, but I was too full after lunch. Our meals were delivered to our table and even though I wasn't very hungry when we arrived, the look and smell of the food fueled my appetite. My croissant creation was filled with fresh ingredients and the decadent combination of savory and sweet hit the spot. The espresso martini was wonderful, even my picky husband liked it. To our delight, we had the opportunity to meet the owners, a husband and wife team. Both very stylish, with warm smiles and welcoming conversation. The wife is the pastry chef, I had to wonder if she ever had time to sleep considering the array of beautiful desserts on display and what it must take to perfect them, individually. We look forward to returning on our next visit to London hopefully during the warmer months to enjoy their patio, and THIS time, dessert first! And maybe second! Now that we are back home in Los Angeles, I find myself wishing we had a Happiness Café.
